Watched this for the nostalgia, I grew up not too far from here! First train journey I went on when I was very young was some slam door thumper that wouldn’t even start, and I remember first stepping on a then-new southern train the next month or so and being AMAZED 😂 “look mum! The doors open by themselves!” Fantastic work, keep it up!
I currently live a few meters from London Victoria, and I've been fortunate enough to enjoy a number of journeys with Southern for £3 each way (we're talking journeys of up to 2h30m), which I think is value that can't be beaten in the UK
Here too! I've made a fair few trips from southampton to gatwick, and even too london, I've had some £3 fairs and never paid more than £5.90 with a railcard. Incredible value compared to south eastern for example.
No commuter train provides catering anywhere in the UK however i agree with you power outlets are now taken for granted so are very annoyin when they are not provided. That was a fantastic price for sure of £3.30
@Yashneil ramlall Southern Would have trouble with some of their trains and when they took over from connex they were still using old slam door trains. just thought id say that
@@dave1001 No, Dave - they had catering on the 4-CIG classes which ran into the early years of this century. They did close down the buffet cars a few years before the services were replaced with more modern trains, but "a trolley service of drinks and light refreshments" replaced them except on Sundays. The old buffets were a godsend in the 1980s when I travelled with a small child - something to do on the long stretch between Gatwick and Hayward's Heath!
I stumbled across your vids and have been watching them one at a time so as not to binge. Being at home and social distancing, I enjoy watching the journeys through England, as that's pretty much all I do when I visit there. So, thanks for upbeat reviews and I look forward to watching more from your channel.
Roughly half of New Southern Railway's Electrostar EMU's have 3-Pin 240 Volt power sockets in their First Class seating areas. The other half don't. There are a couple of power sockets at floor level by the sliding doors in each carriage which are labelled "Not for Public Use" but in fact supply stabilised 240 Volts AC (or something approximating to it) for use by the carriage cleaners when the trains are in the depots overnight. I've never been told off by a male (as opposed to a female) Southern Railway Conductor (sorry, On Board Supervisor) for plugging my laptop computer (with a plug incorporating surge protection) into one of the "Not for Public Use" sockets. Southern Railway also offers £5 Weekend First upgrades so if travelling on Saturdays, Sundays or Public Holidays with a Standard ticket I always sit in First Class, knowing that the chance of an OBS coming around to collect the supplement is minimal. At one time a trolley service operated on Southern Railway services between Bognor Regis and London Victoria (in both directions) and First Class ticket holders were entitled to one free cup of coffee or tea (no biscuits!) per journey, but this little perk stopped a decade ago. The Class 377 Electrostars will do 0-50mph in 50 seconds (what Third Rail 3,200 Amps @ 750 Volts DC was intended to do) but thereafter the acceleration tails off and I've never timed a train on the old Central Division at more than 98mph …. and that was downhill with a following wind!
interesting fact about one of the stations yu would have passed through which is 'Wivelsfield Railway Station'. But first some info about stations. You will enter a station and either walk into the ticket hall and then up to the platforms (like Haywards Heath) Walk into the ticket hall and on to the platform (Like Hassocks) or Walk into the ticket hall and down to the platforms (like Burgess Hill). But Wivelsfield Station is different. you walk up to the ticket hall and then walk up to the platforms. There is access straight on to platform 2 for disabled users but not access to platform 1 All 4 stations I have mentioned are all on the Brighton Main Line. I used to live in between Burgess Hill and Wivelsfield. In fact if the train was able to stop under the bridge where the line goes straight to Brighton and goes off to Lewes I would have been able to walk home!
£3.30 is cheap! Earlier this month I travelled from Gloucester to Gatwick (changing at Reading), a distance of about 130 miles and it only cost me £12!
A 16-25 Railcard (or a 60+ Senior Railcard) offers a 34% discount off the cost of Advance Purchase tickets both First Class and Standard C***s all over the British Railways network. Unfortunately I'm too old for the former and too young for the latter, so have to make do with a Network Railcard …. which, of course, doesn't offer a discount on Advance Purchase or First Class walk-on tickets.
I think the class 377's are brilliant trains when they actually arrive. Soft seats and pleasent interiors. By the way the second station with a short platform ( Lancing ) actually extended the platform in August 2020.
Have you ever considered the night Rivera from paddington to penzance I believe its considerably cheaper than the caledonian sleeper and also still uses mk3s
When I was commuting between Reading and Bracknell in the '90's, the carriages were some '40s throwback and suffered cancellations and severe delays. I reckon of improvements were made by modernising their train fleet.
This is "my" train - I've been taking trains between London Victoria and Goring-by-Sea for the best part of 60 years. No point in upgrading to first class as there's no difference. Back in the day, they always had a buffet car on the train - when I had a small child, we always visited the buffet between Gatwick Airport and Haywards Heath, as it was something to do! But trains are much busier nowadays and it wouldn't be practical. The trainsets were built before people had as much need of power outlets, but I think I've read somewhere that they are being upgraded, which will probably include them. Again, back in the day, there was an enormous trainshed just outside West Worthing station (our "nearly there" landmark), and it is a great sorrow that it has been pulled down! West Worthing was originally the terminus of that line, and even in my childhood about half the trains terminated there.
I luv trains from when I was a kid there were steam engines then my dad was in southern India every year we used enjoy long trips in our holidays Iam old now wish I would travel in train in your beautiful land 🙏🌈🙏🌈🤝🤝
Great review, love the bit where you can walk through connecting train sets. After seeing your review of the seats on Thameslink 700 sets, I think it is plainly obvious Southern have the more comfortable offering.
I live in the area and always choose Thameslink over Southern. Delays with Southern are ridiculous and Thameslink, whilst yes the seats are less comfortable, have much better info screens and much more space in the carriage.
Notice in your UK vids you either start or finish at some very odd locations (West Worthing ,Darlington etc). Do you travel down from your home town the day before when you have very early starts or do you have family all over the country who put you up !! As for this vid Southern gets some really poor press but whenever I have used them they have been fine - perhaps, like you, I tend to travel in quieter parts of the week and compared to South West Trains (which I use frequently) they offer good value for money with some good deals to be had.
Yes, I've got people pretty much everywhere that I can stay with. Also, for a lot of my pre-covid trip reports, I was travelling down to the football hence the slightly unusual start and end points.
@@DylansTravelReports Makes sense - like me you travel for the footy - didn't think of that....well if you get to do your Southampton - New York trip when they resume next year you can add another stopover place here in Southampton...haha
The 377's aren't too bad I guess, though I think the first class sections are pretty pointless lol. Spent many hours on them travelling to Worthing to visit family, always hope to get a unit with 2+2 seating rather than the horrid 2+3 seating. I live in Dorset so have to change at Southampton Central for Worthing, definitely prefer this part of the journey more as SWR's 444's are much nicer to travel on than the 377's are.

When you're waiting on the platform, they'll announce which stations have a platform that's shorter than the train so you know which coaches to get on. A similar announcement on the train.
