This is so marvelously over the top PHYSICAL - Jerry understood TV in a way he never understood film.. That small screen was his canvas and he filled it with such energy that even now, in black and white it is completely ALIVE. No less than Orson Welles saw early Martin and Lewis at a nightclub and thought them the funniest live comedy he had ever seen.

so true the did play off each other at this point. It also help them get their name out there when they went there different way. They went in different direction but was successful in those area. So glad they meant and made a mend with each other before Dean's passed away.

Dean Martin is literally shocked by Jerry Lewis’ antics. My God they were so funny and considering it’s 1950 it must have been amazing on that new dangled device the TV.

They absolutely hit on an incredible combination and I can only imagine how revolutionary and popular they were. This is 1950 when very few people had televisions and those that did were watching on 6-10” screens. I’m watching this on a 10” iPad.

The incredible combination is called chemistry. And that particular chemistry exists only when TWO PEOPLE LOVE EACH OTHER. Whatever gender they are. Just look at them to realize it. Of course, self-righteous homophobes will never admit it.

    • @kellycaviness4850

I think they adored one another. They had their differences of course but you just don't walk away from what they had and forget. I know it sounds dramatic but a part of dean lived in Jerry and a part of Jerry lived in Dean. Just watch them together and you see the love and devotion , it's like they could read each other's minds. Especially in these early Colgate comedy hour shows. They were just absolutely marvelous together. Jerry was once asked why they were so popular and he said because of the closeness of he and Dean. People wanted to see that and he was right. They were magic together!!

The way they look into each other's eyes. Was so beautiful to see how one could depend on the other to make it work without failure. True love and respect to one another Jerry so put spoken on how he was treated abused hit slapped and spoke on what he didn't like . Yet take it to the frint of all the skits . Some where in that showed true feelings and used them in the skits weather real or not . I believe true to the point and needed to be said .. like don't hurt me cuz I love you lol. Love it . 😅😅😅😅😅true love for one another❤❤❤so real❤❤❤❤❤

Did anyone catch when baby Jerry starts to watch TV after 22:22 and Dean comes in and says, You watching Hopalong Cassidy? and Jerry says, No, Faye Emerson. Apparently, she had a major wardrobe malfunction on her live show earlier that year... which would account for Jerry's wild behavior and then Dean's reaction.

Jerry Lewis, what a Master! The only guy that could be dorky, speak like Urkel, and should have been the comic relief against his cool, hunky costar that could even croon! He got second billing but was the Star, and the one the press wanted to talk to. And at the time they called it quits, they still had $1B (in today's money) in contracts to perform. Just WOW!

    • @jerrylewisthekid5479

They were billed the same way as Martin & Lewis. Jerry didn't have second billing compared to Dean but where do you read such things?? And they were stars in the same way. There could be no Martin without Lewis, there could be no Lewis without Martin, as long as they stayed together.

I did two shows with Martin & Lewis, more with Eddie Cantor. Jerry was strained all the time, Dean made the jokes that were not rehearsed. The director of one show told Jerry to make a cross - actor's move to or away or somewhere - Dean immediately chimed in: "He can't make a cross, he's Jewish!". Everyone laughed but Jerry. I was very young at the time but no problems with either, except Jerry's dogged determinism to BE FUNNNNNNNNNYYYYYY!!!!!!! Lonnie Burr

Petrillo began his show business career playing Lewis' baby in a sketch on the "Colgate Comedy Hour" in 1950." (www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jerry-lewis-double-sammy-petrillo-87773)

After finagling a meeting with comic Milton Berle, then rehearsing at Nova Studios in New York City, Petrillo recalled, Berle sent Petrillo and Berle's agent (Herb Jaffee), to meet with Jerry Lewis at the Sherry-Netherland Hotel in Manhattan. Lewis, after overcoming his initial trepidation - _"Jerry said a couple of derogatory things to me",_ Petrillo recalled in the same interview. _"He said something to the effect of, 'Don't sign any checks (UK cheques) and tell people you're Jerry Lewis!' He wasn't being funny. He was being serious"_ - hired the 16-year-old Petrillo for a sketch with him on NBC's Colgate Comedy Hour television series.
Petrillo rehearsed _"for about a week over at the Mayflower Catering Hall on West 43rd Street",_ and was paid _"about $60"_ for playing Lewis' baby in a crib, though only at the end of the sketch, in which Petrillo has no lines. The episode ran November 12, 1950. (THIS EPISODE !).
Petrillo said in a 1991 interview that a favourable write-up in the trade paper 'Variety', prompted Lewis to have Petrillo sign with Lewis' talent agency, MCA. Despite promises by Lewis, Petrillo found no work. After the 'New York Journal-American' (entertainment writer), Jack O'Brian remarked that he hoped Lewis had nothing to do with Petrillo's predicament; Petrillo said he and his father realized that Lewis was _"keeping me on a 'shelf' because he doesn't want me to work"._ His father got Petrillo, (being an under age minor), released from his MCA contract.
(Wikipedia - Sammy Petrillo) - FOR MORE INFO about his 'double act' impersonating 'Martin & Lewis'...
