  • A large grass snake was lying in wait for a frog. If the frog had moved, the snake would probably have attacked it immediately. But suddenly another frog jumped into the water next to the snake and the grass snake immediately attacked it. Note that the first frog sat still at the beginning when the snake attacked the other frog / Una gran culebra de collar estaba al acecho de una rana.

Maybe this frog thinks: as long as the other frog is eaten, I won't be eaten. Just like in this video! ua-cam.com/video/PoxOpg43zO0/v-deo.html

Fortunately, I filmed this scene in slow motion (12x), because at normal speed you would not have been able to see the frog's jump at all.

Hello, this is a very exciting movie of you and really nice to see. (not for the frog ) This is a deadly pool for the frogs with snakes all around. The frog lived for 8 minutes in the mouth
of the snake and gets a slowly dead, but that's nature too.Greetings Gijs

This frog had a pretty quick death because it wasn't that big. Very large frogs take much longer to swallow. If I were a frog, I'd rather be eaten by a much bigger snake.

This grass snake is one of the BIGGEST snakes in your videos. Amazing how some frogs cry out when being devoured and others don't. I got a kick out of that frog in the beginning of the video looking like it was not fazed at all that one of its frog friends was getting eaten close by. 😒 Thanks for the video!

I think that the frogs instinctively know that they themselves are not in danger if another frog is eaten by a grass snake right next to them. In addition, other frogs may be conspecifics, but they are also food competitors. Frogs therefore also benefit if one of them is eaten from time to time.

@@beatschneideranimalfilms1659 Thanks for your comments and the frogs that do not get eaten benefit the most. I guess their only defense is to jump away as far as possible when they know snake danger is nearby and to try to jump out of a snake's mouth when it gets caught by a snake. What else do these grass snakes eat? Are frogs their main diet? There are so many of these water snakes lurking underwater that these frogs are always in danger of getting consumed. Glad I am not a frog since I could not live like that but yah, what choice do they have? These frogs have to live near and in the water to survive and have to live with these snakes who have quite an appetite for frogs, big or small. 😵‍💫

@@DougCeleste I think that the life of frogs (especially the larger ones) is much less threatening than you think. There are far fewer snakes than frogs at a pond and big snakes are even rarer. You often don't see any snakes at all for days. Grass snakes not only eat amphibians, but also fish, small mammals and birds. They also hunt outside the water. For small frogs, however, life is already very dangerous. Many of them are eaten, but not only by snakes, but also by other animals, and many are also eaten by larger frogs. I have already seen a small frog jump away from a snake directly in front of the mouth of a large frog and then be eaten immediately.

@@DougCeleste By the way, you can now see some footage of frogs and dragonflies filmed at "my" pond in the new documentary series "Life On Our Planet" on Netflix. In the summer of 2021, a camera team from Silverback Productions filmed there for the 3rd episode of “Life On Our Planet”. Three of my shots can also be seen in the sequence about frogs and dragonflies. In a year or two, Netflix will probably release its new documentary series on UA-cam. The older series were also all published on UA-cam.
