the fact that you were breaking quartz without proper ventilation and masks says a lot. those crystals get into the air and are easily breathed but instead of coming out or becoming inert they will continue to cut your lungs up for the rest of your life due to the nature movement of your lungs while breathing... that was dumb and dangerous for your whole crew
I hate to say it because they most likely didn't mean to make it a dangerous environment with some of the minerals, but you're absolutely right. I did some research and the risks that quartz can pose when being broken down, is the fine bits of respirable particles that are potentially breathed in. Long periods of inhalation can cause silicosis, where fibrosis of the lungs cause shortness of breath and can lead to death in some cases. There is also a way to calcine the quartz to make it break down easier, which poses an even worse threat to the lungs, because of how little the particles are. Over exposure to silica will result in weakening the body's defense mechanisms, which you can guess where this will lead to.
