It was the former version, given away to fan club members well before Blur was released. I remember receiving it in '96', perhaps even before the last single 'Charmless Man' from TGE was released. Consequently (I suppose) it will always remain the definitive version, even it its 'raw' form! 🤣
[Verse 1] The Death in The Party Just passed away Why did we Bother? Just stayed in time [Chorus] Another night And I thought Well Well Go to another party And Put myself Gently on the shelf [Verse 2] The Devil Red Face Teenager Are you in the kitchen? Never saw the light We should stay at home [Chorus] Another night And He called Well Well Go to another party And Hang myself Gently on the shelf [Verse 3] Death of a Galaxy She's already stuck Where she has the Entertaining [Chorus] Another night And She thought Well Well Go to another party And Hang myself Gently on the shelf
The death of the party Came as no surprise Why did we bother Should have stayed away Another night And I thought well well Go to another party And hang myself Gently on the shelf The death of the teenager Standing on his own Why did he bother Should have slept alone Another night And I thought well well Go to another party And hang myself Gently on the shelf Another night And I thought well well Go to another party And hang myself Gently on the shelf Another night And I thought well well Go to another party And hang myself Another night And I thought well well Go to another party And hang myself
'Blur' was a ridiculously great album, but this version I'd heard well before (it was given to fan club members). And I always thought it was far far superior even in its raw form. The moment Alex's Bass comes in is so haunting given the rhythm guitar being acoustic (it could have been a double bass of course and still kept it acoustic)! But if they'd have kept the rhythm Guitar acoustic for the album 'Blur' I think it would have been better. 🤔 Properly recorded and produced I mean. At a guess I'd say Damon is on Acoustic Guitar (albeit amplified) and Lead Vocals, Graham on Electric Guitar from about 2:00, and is also with Alex and Dave on Backup Vocals throughout. Obviously Alex on Bass Guitar earlier on from 0:59 and Dave is maybe on tambourine or some other sort of handheld chime somewhere! Stephen Street who I'd bet my life 'produced' this is a genius often overlooked, perhaps. He also certainly produced 'Zombie' by 'The Cranberries'... Need I say more? I will anyway! Much as I adore Blur, neither they (nor most artists for that matter) have EVER released a piece of music so powerful. Not just artistically, but _actually._ 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' might have had an impact. But the aforementioned song/video over a decade later was crucial to ending the evil of The Troubles IMO. * nb I realise tensions, violence and trauma still exist, but _only_ those who were not alive in the 50's (perhaps even earlier) to the early 90's could even try to argue. I was only born in 78' (admittedly I'm English in the Midlands), but I was FULLY aware of the horror throughout my childhood, The News 'seemed' to be full of horrific events surrounding this. 'Zombie' seems in hindsight to have been a stark turning point. Hence why I can't but literally ball my eyes out if ever I hear it. It's too powerful. RIP Dolores.
very stripped down and mellow. Stephen Street did a great job on adding extra melchonoly details
Interesting version!!!

You have the song (high cool demo) of leisure album , good job
"why do we bother?"
Really lIke this version, not as doom laden as the album version. I do prefer the album version though
Thank you for sharing! ^_^
[Verse 1]
The Death in The Party
Just passed away
Why did we Bother?
Just stayed in time
[Chorus]
Another night
And I thought Well Well
Go to another party
And Put myself
Gently on the shelf
[Verse 2]
The Devil Red Face Teenager
Are you in the kitchen?
Never saw the light
We should stay at home
[Chorus]
Another night
And He called Well Well
Go to another party
And Hang myself
Gently on the shelf
[Verse 3]
Death of a Galaxy
She's already stuck
Where she has the
Entertaining
[Chorus]
Another night
And She thought Well Well
Go to another party
And Hang myself
Gently on the shelf
The death of the party
Came as no surprise
Why did we bother
Should have stayed away
Another night
And I thought well well
Go to another party
And hang myself
Gently on the shelf
The death of the teenager
Standing on his own
Why did he bother
Should have slept alone
Another night
And I thought well well
Go to another party
And hang myself
Gently on the shelf
Another night
And I thought well well
Go to another party
And hang myself
Gently on the shelf
Another night
And I thought well well
Go to another party
And hang myself
Another night
And I thought well well
Go to another party
And hang myself
