- The best movement item in game, the Grappling Hook (in my opinion). It's not the most effective item in ALL situations, but the wide range of uses that the grappling hook provides a player throughout an entire Terraria playthrough makes it at least ONE of the best movement items, and is my personal favorite. These uses will be the focus of todays video as I make my case, in defense of the grappling hook.

I over-rely on wings as a crutch. But yeah, grappling hooks are awesome, and if I ever got good with using them in combat instead of just using them as an afterthought for mining and building, it would bring my boss fights to the next level.
They're tough to use to full effectiveness, incredible potential though
There should be more hook variety, there's basically 3 hooks, basic hooks, double or more hooks for building, ant the teleportating hook, i mean, one hook can hook trees so that's something, but there should should be a hook able to latch onto enemys, get them to you or repel them, hook coins and items, maybe a hook that gives light? idk i'm all for variety and items that are useful through all the playtrough
I'm talking mods here but Polarities adds a few unique hooks!
There's one that grabs air, one that's like a shotgun, and a couple that, while affected by gravity, will prop you up some distance off the ground if that's where they landed
That's a cool idea! I think it makes SENSE that grappling hooks tend to have the same kind of use, since they're just one type of item, having a variety of special effects would be cool though
Anti gravity hook is amazing and super underrated. It's really good once you get the hang of it.

Grappling onto doors lets you stay there, and whenever you try to walk through the door, it will send you flying at full speed through the door. This is especially useful since you can move through all your house areas much faster regardless of if you get the time to fully build up your speed or have enough room.
Also, once you get Hermes boots for the first time, they will honestly be pretty bad since you can't get to full speed more often than not, but like you said, simply jumping, sending the hook ahead of you, and jump canceling it will get full momentum for them. In this way, I love that they don't get replaced by other accessories like that and instead augment them
Just generally, if I didn't have grappling hooks, I would hate early game movement so much that I would never play it again. They make early game bearable after having used wings.

It good but I just like the momentum you get from normal grappling hooks better, but the hook of dissonance is good for stuff like moon lord laser and such

the dissonance hook is pretty cool too cuz i like to be places faster and i dont like waiting for the movement of it
A latched hook also makes you immune to knockback, which is nice when you don't wanna move at all. Also hooks are just fun and sometimes I'll travel by hook just because I can.
I use them constantly for moving around, even when it doesn't really speed me up lol
okay god damn it that confirms that nigh nobody else knows/uses hook bridging (not an actual name i just made it up)
okay so hear me out, hooks could be used to increase the speed where you build bridges or even walls if you use them right, hooking, putting your cursor in the right place, then spam hooking would allow you to place blocks accurately extremely quickly, not a movement thing but it's an extremely helpful technique i discovered while playing once, i can't believe i only saw one other person using it so i wanted to share it
I know that you can hook rapidly to stick to and move along ceilings quickly, do you mean something like that?
@@swyte yes, baiscally use that to build a large line of blocks quickly, wether you are under or above or beside the block it is faster and more accurate to do it with the help of hooks, i didn't want to say that unless more context was needed but if it's still slightly confusing i made a video about not (not a good one but has a small bit of footage of it)
@nesrox only problem with that is I have grapple on my middle mouse button. It would get annoying to do that often, but it makes it very accessible for mid boss fights, general movement, and in a panic it's usually the button I hit.
I feel like everyone knows that the Grapple hook can do these things, but they never really thought of it as a essential tool, I guess idk 😅. no pressure but remember that Patreon lol🗿

Anyways, I've already been aware of most (if not all) of these already. Personally I just use dashes when I can rather than the hook, because 1. I'm not really very skilled at it (although it doesn't take much I assume, I just haven't practiced it much except for to get a boost when I'm moving in one direction or to quickly switch directions like a dash) and 2. but think of all the damage I'll lose when I move the cursor away from my enemy for like a third of a second!11!11!!!11!!11!! (yes, part 2 is sarcastic for those who genuinely can't tell, if you actually see this)

I think that's just the vanity effect of the Celestial Starboard when you're using it or falling

Not that it helps a lot but you can grapple onto a door and it'll automatically unhook and keep your speed when going through it.

Edit: I wish you brought up how hooks can completely cancel fall damage with good timing, it would certainly help your claim.
Also should've mentioned the hook of dissonance, I've literally dodged the moon lord laser with just it before. And also the anti-gravity hook.
Is there something I didn't mention in the section where I talked about it being able to cancel fall damage that I'm not thinking of? As well, I would've brought up the hook of dissonance, but I was trying to focus only on the base grappling hook abilities and their applications, which is why none of the specialized hooks were talked about
there's not really an explanation needed imo the grapple hook is one of the few items that once you acquire you won't stop using it until the very end, you just might swap it out for a shiny one or one that does cool stuff
Always has a use. Some of the specialized hooks like the Hook of Dissonance are incredible tools in the late game as well, that one might warrant a video of its own at some point
maybe not the BEST item for sheer mobility but its the best mobility item because its obtainable the moment you start the world
i use it every run for the first couple bosses and for mining until i have wings
I think it's the best just because you can use it through the whole game and it never really stops having a potential use

by the way my favorite hook is the hook of dissonance i use it all the way to supreme calamitas because of the teleport and yes it can't give you any speed but for that I use dash

I'm doing a Calamity boss drops only challenge where all weapons, armor, and accessories can only be uses if they drop straight from bosses or are crafted from only materials dropped by bosses, and I can relate that the slime hook, being my only movement equipment, is indeed very good.
