wow! i grabbed an autoharp on a whim a few weeks ago having never heard of one before. cleaned it up and tuned it and this video was a treat to find. since i am a hobbyist who has like zero musical background, its inspiring to see what i could realistically do with a little practice. i love your low tech set up too lol.
My wife wants to be able to play children’s songs for our son. I have a guitar and song book I use. Do you think she could easily pick up the Autoharp for simple strumming? G, C, D, A, E, Bm? Is it as easy as pushing 1 key and then strumming?
YES! It's as easy as pushing one key for the chord, and strumming across the strings (best with a thumb pick) to sound the chord. Here's a list of the chords generally found on a standard 21-chord autoharp: A standard 21-button" Oscar Schmidt or Chromaharp autoharp's "factory layout" chord array (given in Circle-of-Fifths) is Ab, Eb, Bb, Bb7, F, F7, C, C7, Cm, G, G7, Gm, D, D7, Dm, A, A7, Am, E7, Em, and B7. You can always have them put other chords on the harp in place of the standard ones, such as an E and Bm, or you can change the key of the song to use chords that already come on the harp standard. She could simply strum the chords throughout the song (using one button for each chord) and sing away! Hope this helps! Great Christmas gift! :)
Madison....one of the best players out there has some video lessons to help you get started...here's the first lesson, then just click on her name "Jo Ann Smith" below her video to go to her UA-cam page and continue with her lessons. But, when you get to where you are holding, and strumming the autoharp (should be pretty quick), the best way to inspire you, and have fun, is to get some songsheets with the words and chords to songs you already know and like, and just push the labeled chord button on the harp, strum the string gently, and sing away. You can do it, and have lots of fun....easier and easier with time. Click on this link for Jo Ann's first lesson video ua-cam.com/video/ajxv1g_jpbo/v-deo.html. Now, here's a link that will give you lots of songs sheets with the lyrics and chords....hopefully, you can find lots of songs here that you know. Click on this link: www.doctoruke.com/beginners.html These song sheets are for the Ukulele, but, it doesn't matter....if you have chord names with your lyrics, you will know when to change and push the next chord button to continue the song....can be for guitar, or any instrument....as long as you see when to change chords. Now, you may not have all the chords to some songs on your autoharp....just don't chord and strum in that part, keep singing, and start strumming on the next chord you do have on your autoharp. There are 1000's of songs out there that only have 3 or 4 chords in them...keep looking, and you will find these.....they are the best ones to start with! Good luck, and have fun!! You're grandparent would be proud!! :)
Lovely singing voice. You would loved the California Autoharp Gathering. May 14th -20th. We meet every year.
Thanks so much, Dawn! :)
