    Dear Simon, please make an old man very happy and ask Alan if he would like to be interviewed by VG.

      I think Vaughn said in a previous video that he has already asked Alan and been turned down, Alan saying he’s talked about DM enough.

    • @klax001
      @klax001 3 роки тому +9

      @@RB-bd5tz that's a real shame, I would even settle for Alan just discussing synths and other electronic music from the past, kind of like he did in that one UA-cam video called "Soundcheck with Alan Wilder". At least I think that was what it was called. He was played a small bit of a song and then talked about it. It was wonderful to watch.
      Edit: the video I mentioned is called "Alan Wilder about Depeche Mode and other things" If anyone hasn't seen it yet.

It was the one with the “girls” on the big screen. I couldn’t help but switch. So glad I did. I’m hooked on the Alan Wilder years.

    I had the Emax SE :D And the manual is so funny. There is some warning like "dont drop emax from plane onto penguins" . What I love with these old samplers is that the aliasing of samples with added reverb afterwards sounds so good. edit: lol he just mentioned this :)

    These machines are classics - both in the good sense and the old car sense. Every year that passes the components age, some become unobtainable, and things fail. Some older machines are kept working through the care and feeding of individuals and groups that are interested in the nostalgia. I think we should enjoy these past artifacts like you are, while they still exist, and for a magical short while there is often a time when they are both obtainable and affordable by the next generation that will care for them.

    I've got a few E-MU Emax SE models they have a lot of hidden Easter eggs, from their labels, software and hidden stuff printed on the circuit boards. Love those sounds they put out with the analog filters. I didn't keep the model II I had. I do have a bunch of others from Emulator II, EIII and a bunch of E & ESI models too. The keybed is nice on the Emax Model 1 or 1000 series, and a trick if you ever need an extra key for a repair is they use the same ones as the Kawai K1 keyboard, much easier to find in a pinch.

    Zip disks! I remember them - I work in the print/graphic industry and what a revolution it was being able to get 100MB of data on something (roughly) the same size as a standard floppy disk 💾. A couple of years or so later, the same company released the Jaz drive, which had a monstrous 1GB capacity. Prior to Zip/Jaz, we used Syquest cartridges a lot, which were big, bulky and, in our experience at least, notoriously unreliable.
    Great video - fantastic to watch two people utterly geeking out about their obsession ... and those DM samples sound f-ing phenomenal through that gorgeous bit of kit!

    • @SockSockson
      @SockSockson 3 роки тому +3

      Yeah, I had a Roland VP9000 that used a zip drive. The disks were great - solid. I spilled a full can of coke into a box of my zip disks, had to clean them quickly. Thought I'd lost a shit load of sounds. The disks were still working 18 years later when I came to sell it.

    • @abrokenframe72
      @abrokenframe72 3 роки тому +3

      Haha! Yes I work in marketing (with a long career in publishing) and had a little moment when I saw the Zip disks as well! And the optical disks, ugh. So amazing that you can just transfer files that used to take forever to save through “the cloud” these days...

  • @lotus30com
    @lotus30com 3 роки тому +7

    Simon sent me an image of that Zip disk after I lost out on the original Wilder auction years ago. Thanks so much, Simon!
    George, make sure you go back on those banks and try every key. One of the amazing things is to see how Alan arranged all the sounds he needed across the keyboard. Some sounds are on one key only, while others are on 3 when he only needed one for the song. I kinda assumed it was in case he missed the note, he could still get a nearly correct sound to play by hitting an adjacent key.

    Those sounds bring me right back to 1988. I was 16 and was at the Rose Bowl. I can still see my high school sweetheart’s tears rolling down her cheeks when they played “Stripped”. Fast forward to December, my wife and I saw DM Memento Mori in downtown Los Angeles. What an incredible performance. I wish I would’ve slowed down and enjoyed the 80’s more.

    I've recently joined the Emu sampler club, getting an ESI4000 with 72MB RAM installed. I've also got the external ZIP drive, but have added a SCSI2SD drive, which gives me 4 x 4GB hard drives (up to 256 banks per virtual disk) on a single 16GB SD card. If you haven't already Vaughn, this is a very worthwhile upgrade.

      Yeah they sound like they make their music on a Casio SK-1. Actually their tones (signature sound) were Alan’s genius. You can hear it on his Recoil albums. Sadly that sound has died.

    Hi Vaughn - really enjoyed this video too, like having the experience of playing one of these gems and having a mate show you how it all works. I have a super-geeky question for you - do you know if the EMU proteus has the same A/D converters as the Emax?

      The original Proteus 1(released late '89) was based on EIII technology and was 16 bit with no filters..
      The later versions(proteus 200 onward) was based on the tech developed for the EIV and added the digital filters used in the EIV and the Morpheus)

    OMG guys, you have got to stop doing these nostalgic synth videos! Awesome! Dragged myself out of the sample quagmire, kicking and screaming, and now you're dragging me back in again. The nostalgia has forced me to haul my Esynth up from the basement to the 2nd floor. Do you understand the pain of carrying what feels like the weight of a DX7 and CZ-1 in one unit, up 2 flights of stairs? I swear it weighs 7,000lbs! Now I just need to spend a few minutes meditating and praying in the hope that it turns on without incident. Dave Rossum should start another Sample Synth company (not Eurorack), and call it Ostrich because we all know Ostrich > Emu. Just make a new full sampler Dave, puhleeeeeze!

    Despite its weird versioning, the last OS for the E-mu Emax was called 1.0. It contained all of the SCSI functionality, disk utilities, and other features that E-mu had built in. Almost any Emax can run this version and be the most advanced version, with the right hardware. Also, save yourself millions of hours of "WAITING" by putting a SCSItoSD inside it. I've done this to 8 Emax's now, and its worth it.

      I want to try this on my EMAX 1 "HD RETRO" version rack.
      (I believe the 'HD Retro' badge means it was upgraded to HD version later, not at the factory?)
      Anyway, can I just disconnect the internal HD, and connect SCSI2Sd to the scsi cable?
      (I think it's a 50 pin type).
      Could be adapted to DB25 scsi, I suppose, with the right adaptor cable also?
      I thought about dangling this out the back.

    • @Manmademadman
      @Manmademadman 2 роки тому

      @@EvLoutonian I don't know about the "HD RETRO" which might just be an after factory retro-fit.
      The internals are all the same: there's a 50 pin connector on the motherboard, and you can connect straight to it, minding the pinout numbering-- match pin 0 with pin 0. And yes, you can also use it with the right adapter. I connected all mine directly, but you can dangle it out the back, or out the floppy space, or in place of the floppy. Once you replace it, I would guess you never need to touch it to add samples to it again.
