I cannot thank you enough for your series on 4.0l engines. I was fighting the installation of a 4.0 in my son's Ranger. I watched this video yesterday, went home and had it mated to the transmission and bolted into the vehicle in less than 1 hour. Truly thankful and you deserve more than subscribers and comments. Again, thank you - this is the best video series on the SOHC engines, PERIOD.

Make sure the converter is fully seated. A lot of times when you pull the engine the converter likes to move forward a notch

Yeah you’ll totally trash the trans pump if it isn’t fully seated. I’ve seen it so many times on the forums.

You are the first person I have written a comment to on UA-cam. I just want to thank you for your video. Having consolidated an engine installation in a half hour video is beyond excellent.
I have a 2006 Ford Explorer (Lucy) with 130k+ miles on it. I just had its transmission rebuilt and bought a new set of tires to get it ready for the next 100k miles or so.
A guy at work offered to change the valve cover gaskets for me, but in the process he must to dropped a bolt or something inside the engine, because when he tried to start it, the engine seized and never started anymore.
He immediately said it wasn't his fault and that most likely the engine was old and that was going to happen sooner or later.
A week later he told me that he felt bad about what had happened and offered to swap the engine if I bought a new one. So, as you must have already guessed it, I bought a new engine and the guy started the swap.
It took him 3 days to removed the old engine and about 3 weeks to drop in the new one. Losing bolts, ripping hoses and breaking pipes in the process.
A month later he asked me if I still wanted him to finish the job, to which I replied, NO. He had done enough damage and I have learned the lesson.
I tried getting more than a few of the so called "Mechanics" to come and finish the job, and they all said yes, but none one ever showed up.
My poor Lucy has been in my garage for more than a year now.
I normally do my own oil changes, tune-ups and breaks, but I've never messed with the engine before, but after watching your video I have decided to take matters into my own hands.
    Wish me luck.

It's alive, my Lucy is alive! 🚗
It took me all weekend, but I did it! 👨‍🔧
And it did not exploded or catched on fire. 🤪
Thanks to you and your awesome video.
I wish you the best on your life and all your endeavors. 🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️

    • @iamdjnam

Use a T30 with a 6” wobbly extension and a 3/8 ratchet. Not a swivel adapter, the extension is rounded at the end allowing some play. With that combination it’s mad easy.

It's a fairly good engine when it's right but there is so much shit to go wrong with it. I prefer to work on the small block Chevrolet V8 any day over this 4.0 crap...but u seem to be pretty dam good at what u do...I'm impressed and it takes alot to impress me...sincerely Rob Steeves A.K.A TripleM...if u read this ask me what TripleM actually means and I would love to tell you...ull get a kick out of it.

I have a bit of a weird question here. I am putting a 4.0L in a Ranger and I see that your AC compressor is more at an angle rather then straight across like mine is. Do you know if they changed up brackets at all between the years? (I didn't realize the 4.0 I was putting in was an Explorer engine until I was having issues with getting the AC to clear the battery tray

    • @iamdjnam

Chances are they’re different. They explorer engine bay is much bigger than the ranger.

Alright getting a lot closer to finishing and she fired up. However I am getting a serious smoke problem. It isn’t a fluid burning I don’t think, but i can’t see exactly where from. It looks like from the exhaust but the smoke is billowing from around the intake area. No leaks from the coolant system or oil which is a plus. Is it normal for the engine to burn off stuff when first firing it back up?

    • @iamdjnam
      @iamdjnam  3 роки тому

Yes it’s normal to have some smoke, shouldn’t have much more than seen in this video. Make sure it isn’t an electrical harness burning.

I'm told you have to pull the engine to replace it. After watching your rebuild video, I'm think it woud be possible to replace ths timing chain and guide without pulling the engine? I know a complete rebuild make sense but I can't afford this at this time. This engine has 270,000 miles on it, but runs and sounds perfect except for the timing chain issue. Your thoughts wouls be appreciated. Thanks
