Was this easy, medium or hard solder?
Belinda Czerkowicz hey there! It was most likely medium, but should work almost the same with easy or hard. Someone on Aspiring Metalsmiths was having a problem soldering with the little butane torch, and everyone was telling her that she needed to heat it to cherry red, and another person said heat it for several minutes, and another said this torch didn’t get hot enough, and yet another was trying to help her balance solder on top of the joint. I was just trying to show her than when the metal is clean, and you’re using flux, and the joint is tight, that the process goes very quickly. Tuck the solder under the joint, and it will jump up onto the ring of the whole ring is heated evenly. I didn’t realize I’d left this up! 😁
I was also showing the “D” configuration of the ring, which makes it so much easier to align the ends. Then use a ring mandrel to round the with with a rawhide mallet...I struggled with this for years until someone shared this trick with me.
Kat, I was trying to solder today using the same torch and having all kinds of problems..the solder wasnt melting at all, then it was melting but balling up on the side of the joint, etc...I came across this video looking for help. I have My-T-Flux and easy, medium and hard pallions and I’m gonna try again tomorrow!! :)
I’m glad you did leave it up!! I knew about making it into a D-shape and the rawhide mallet. I haven’t soldered since I was taking classes and was using an oxy-acetaline torch in the studio, but now I’m home and just have this one. I too was trying to balance the pallion on top of the join! I was also thinking this torch doesn’t get hot enough but now I see it can be done so I’ll keep practicing
Update--I DID IT! I tried it with a charcoal block instead of the soldering pad and third hands like I was using (I think the combo of the two didn't allow it to get hot enough?) In any event, thank you again for this.
