The BMW wipes the Harley off the map. I LOVE old tractors but don't want an old tractor engine in my bike.

I currently own a 2016 R1200RT and previously a 2013 HD CVO Road Glide and before that a 2008 BMW K1200S and many other motorcycles over the past 52 years. I had the K1600B for a day to test ride while my R1200RT was in for service. Sometimes less is better. While the BMW is great for spirited riding the ESA suspension is not without its problems, with just over 25k miles my ESA needed replacement and was covered under warranty but the cost would have been over 3k if not covered. Even the extended warranty will not cover the ESA suspension since it is considered a wearable component according to my dealer.
The electronics are adequate but lacking on the BMW, you cannot pair your smartphone to the bike. You can only pair the BT on the BMW to your helmet. The audio system is hard to hear at freeway speeds and I wear a Corsair X helmet. My IPhone 6 has a difficult time connecting with my R1200RT with the additional BMW audio cable, it may connect 50% of the time. However my old school 30 pin IPod works as advertised with my R1200RT If you like listening to music at all while riding the HD with the Boom Audio 2 system is the only way to go. There is no audio upgrade available for the BMW except for wearing ear buds or in helmet speakers (Sena 20S). With the HD audio system my IPhone 6 paired with no issues and once again the Boom Audio system blows the BMW audio system out of the water for sound quality and sound level at freeway speeds.
The side bags of the K1600B cannot store my helmet like my R1200RT but the HD will not either. I am not a big fan of the side bag opening on the BMW (R1200RT and K1600B) because you need to buy bag inserts to keep the contents from falling out of the bag. When you open the bag there is just an opening with a slick hard plastic surface and the contents can and will fall out. On my R1200RT I purchased a top case that opens from the top and it is my go to option for storage. I like the HD side bags better because the bag lids open from the top and not the side.
Yes the K1600B is faster and has more power then the HD it even has more power then my R1200RT. I view horse power ratings and torque figures as bragging rights. Both bikes will get you from A to B with no drama. Both bikes will exceed the speed limit and how fast does one need to travel over the speed limit on public roadways.
If listening to music is important and connecting your smart phone to the bike via Bluetooth the Harley is the clear winner. If engine power / acceleration is your motivation then the K1600B is the winner. However if you want to cruise and drive within the speed limit both bikes will perform the task.
I have owned mostly Honda sport bikes over the years and my first HD was a 2003 Softail Deuce followed up by a 2007 Road Glide and then a 2013 CVO Road Glide. All three HD's where dependable and not one drop of oil founds its way to my garage floor. There is no right or wrong answer between either the HD or BMW for bike ownership.

I'm not a big fan of side opening bags as well, for the reason you mentioned. However, the K1600 (not sure if K1600B is same) bags come off, so I think that's an exception. You can walk into the hotel like it's a suitcase, and lay it on its side, and not worry about anything falling out.

My bikes in the last 10yrs have been, 4 Victories, 2 Indians (19 Chieftain & 20 Challenger) and now the BMW K1600b. I have ridden relatives and friends Harleys along with a 22 Road Glide Special a couple months ago. The BMW kicks the shit out of all of them by leaps and bounds!
Now, the K1600 isn’t perfect but it’s more comfortable, except wind buffeting is an insure unless you get a 3 foot tall windshield, which isn’t for me, the bags suck and the stereo is pathetic. But everything else is several notch’s above everything else on the market.

The best point made about the bmw is that it is a touring bike for retired sport riders. I currently own an american cruiser which I am trying to sell, cause I scrape the floor boards all the time and try to cowboy it in ways that it was not meant to do.I like that bmw decided to do that particular seating position, that is the big selling point. Wish they would reduce the cost a bit, by getting rid of the stereo, I have never understood why manufacturers add this to motorcycles, such a waste. Wind noise overwhelms me, and I am usually wearing ear plugs.

I own a 2015 K1600 GT (orange) and a 2014 Road King CVO (also orange). Both bikes are great for different reasons. There is nothing like cruising on a Harley. The heartbeat of the engine is hypnotic and therapeutic. The sound is instantly recognizable and with the experience comes a certain freedom or sense of freedom. BTW, the CVO has tons of power and the bike handles well for that type of riding. Whether all day touring or short stints. The K1600 is also a great bike and amazingly fast. You get everywhere in a hurry. Suspension is great, brakes are great. It begs you to give it more throttle and to go faster. It begs you to challenge every road, every obstacle. And it delivers constantly. You can’t go wrong with either bike. Both will have you smiling. The HD as you ride and enjoy existing. The BMW as you ride and enjoy accomplishing.

actually you are pretty wrong, even the stock 114 first pulls away from K1600B and the K1600B will pass the Road Glide at around 150-160kmh and will slowly walk away from Road Glide. But then again we are above legal speed limit in most countries anyway. And the M8 stage IV is showing the taillight to this BMW up to 200kmh. Its not a huge difference but its so. While people think that K1600 is insanely fast, its just the sound of the 6 cylinder that makes them think it is...

Kind of apples to oranges, but both bikes serve the same general purpose of long range touring. I currently own a 2019 K1600GTL and previously owned a 2017 Ultra Limited. I loved the Harley and found it to be a comfortable, capable, and reliable ride. It was great on the Interstate for 800 miles a day or more and it was quite nimble as a canyon carver with some extra caution. The Beemer is considerably faster, handles considerable better on twisty roads, but is not as comfortable on high mileage Interstate rides. It is better suited to 100mph cruising speeds over the HD since the Harley shuts off at around 106 mph while the Beemer is just getting going. I think the Beemer will do around 150 mph but I can't personally attest to that. They are both great bikes!

One is VERY comfy, has more room, has a comfy passenger space, made to tour (kinda, this isn’t a GTL). The other is a sports car (kinda, this isn’t an s1000rr), that is pretty fast, and pretty sporty. You can tour in the Boxter and you can try to drive the Cayenne sporty, but neither is in its element.

But if I had a long day in the saddle ahead of me, I would choose the Harley. Looking at the other comments on here, I think most would disagree. But I think the Hogs are great. Well thought out panniers, good comfort with lots of vent options, the best stereo ever on a bike, and better handling than you may believe. I love BMWs, but a day on a Harley is never forgotten.

Good bike, had a rear end issues but got that straight. I put 140k on it, it served me well. I have no reason to believe the ST1300 would have done the same. That V-4 is nice, ride safe!

I had both of these bikes...at the same time. As much as I tried to like the Harley I slowly realized that Harleys were not motorcycles. They are toys, made to be looked at, not ridden. I can't even begin to list all their faults. My K1600GT rides and handles like a Ferrari. Fun is when some Harley wants to give me a run. Even more fun is to follow a bunch of them on some sort bumpy road that keeps them below 55 mph. You guessed it, 100 mph in 4th gear around them all. At that speed the sound of the Beemer drowns out even the loudest HD. I swear I could ride the BMW down railroad tracks at highway speed, that's just how good the suspension is. Good luck.

I’ve ridden sport bikes for 30 years and just bought a Road Glide Special. I still have a 1000 Ninja. I can honestly tell you that I ride the Harley a lot more. My Ninja is the sports car and my Harley is the Escalade. They are no comparison. The BMW sounds like a sport bike, looks like a sport bike and adds touring capabilities but it’s no where near the comfort or wind protection for long rides. My 800 pound Harley kept me safe in 60 mph cross winds as I rode through the Nevada desert. The windshield help reduce fatigue as the wind went over my head. The 114cu motor is faster than most cars so I ample power for passing. If you want to race then maybe a Harley isn’t for you or shouldn’t be your only bike but as for me going on a long ride or even around town I prefer my Harley for the storage, space, customization options , power and resale value. I like the BMW but for touring I would rather get their new R18 as it’s a direct competitor to the Harleys Road Glide and Street Glide.

I have about four hundred thousand miles on Harley Davidson Road Glide since 1999 they are a very nice old man's bike. They handled poorly they weigh too much. Whole design needs updating as we've been telling them for 25 years. A lot of us older Riders I'm 64 now have switched away from Harley-Davidson either because the failure to make a better motorcycle for the price they are charging you. The last Road Glide I went to look at in 2018 was going to cost me $37,000 plus tax. To get out the door I drove my 2015 Road Glide to a BMW dealer and bought a GTL. Incredible motorcycle handles power 750 pounds 250 lb lighter than a Harley-Davidson Road Glide Ultra. I waited for 20 years for Harley-Davidson to make a fast good handling motorcycle. I now own a 2018 BMW GTL and a 2016 BMW GSA. It is so much fun to kick a Harley-Davidson ass on a giant dirt bike that has a hundred 25 horse 110 foot pounds of torque on dirt bike tires

No comparison... I've owned both. The BMW is basically a Super Bike disguised as a American Bagger. Although I'm partial to the BMW because of it's superior performance. The HD is about character and I'm connected to it.

The Harley rider has a nice voice and is pleasant to listen to. Moreover, he was very respective of the bmw. You should invite him more often. I think the beauty and the curse about Harleys is that, you can't really compare them to anything else. They are simply in a different world. You either want to live in that world and explore it or you don't. The more I look at the Harleys, the harder it is becoming to resist their appeal. To me, looks wise the Harley is superior. With all the technology that the bmw does have, I do believe that the majority of people will only explore 10% of it - so why bother. I'll take character and looks anytime and the Harley has it in spades.

BMW is not made to impress a Harley-Davidson owners, but to show them how thing should be done... 6 cilinders for perfectly smooth ride is not comparable with V2 and its vibrations, but comparing is not point at all because of specific american traffic rules, maybe just Grand America which is limited on 100 mph for american market is comparable... trully, HD with its interior design is good only for retired truckers, because of familiar working environment... they like slow driving and truck-a-like cockpit.

Harley customers don't care about other bikes and they don't care about technical aspects of a Harley. They have the looks and the brand in their mind and this is what they want, nothing else. It is like a child referring to every sports car as a "Ferrari", even if it is a red Toyota MR2.

That's a silly thing to post.
      I ride a '17 Road King, but I'm *very* interested in the k 1600 b.
I've not ridden the BMW, but I would expect it to be a more "athletic" bike and perform better than the RK in a sport sense.
As a newer rider (4 years) who rides an HD, I pay attention to all makes and models. Every, and I mean every manufacturer makes something that I would be intrigued enough with to at least throw a leg over and try.
I choose to ride an HD, but I am not brand loyal.

for European riders the best choice would be an adventure sport touring bike. The b roads are not in the best situation and you will have to avoid obstacles on the pavement and many dips. You need powerful brakes and engine, abs and dtc for the slippery wet roads and suspension with long travel. All these cannot be offered by a harley or even the bmw of the review. If you only ride on highways then one of these would be a good choice.

your right at 1400 k the oil had 1384 parts of copper and Harley said they seen that before , at 5000 k i still had copper in
the oil and at 9300 k i was going through oil like you cant believe dealer said 2 to 3 weeks to repair , 6 weeks later
i got the bike back ,put on 1200 in 4 day's then it snowed , the 2013 road glide working great , it seem Harley Crop
need to tell the dealer what to do ,then they take it apart , then the Corp needs picture and a engineer has a look
when he has time ,then tills you to order the parts he tells you to order ,then you wait . i check with dealer in the USA
and they get the same run a round , a dealer in the USA repaired a bike but did not get paid because he did not
get the repair order number , sad Harley trained mechanic don't get the repair your bike until the Corp looks
and give you the go ahead I THINK HARLEY IN TROUBLE when you don't trust you trained mechanic's and that
poor Harley Service and this is the new way of business

the most disappointing thing is that you bought a new bike which engine failed before even you broke in!That I had only saw in aprilia v4 engines which continue to fail for different reasons after 8 years of constant developing the same bike!!!It seems there is no appropriate feedback between the factory and the service shops in both cases.

If I wanted to be riding super fast, I would use my Ducati StreetFighter V4S which will blow this BMW K1600 B away. The Road Glide is for very comfortable cruising cross country. It has plenty enough power.

I say purchase what you like, take care of it, and get out there and ride.

I sold my bmw #3 because of not enough dealers close by and it took a few weeks and was typically very expensive. Now I'm on my second hd no issues yet great dealer network and numerous private shops who are former hd techs. Great parts availability and a excellent aftermarket selection. Stay away from corporate dealerships if possible, u have to spend time finding a good dealership. My favorite one is 100 miles away, but if neccessary i can use my hometown stealership, but overall i prefer hd, i luv guzzis, ducati triumphs bmw but not enough dealers and highly trained technicians 4 me. I'll stay hd...
