This is false antiquarianism. There is a natural evolution of these things. Forcing people to stop kneeling after they have since the first centuries is banning it. Kneeling has been the Latin Church's custom since the Days of the Roman persecution. Romans always knelt before their emperor. God is ours, which is why we kneel.@@melarrow6202
Actually, as much as I personally prefer receiving on my knees and on the tongue, the fact is that in the earliest days of the Church, people received standing and in the hand. Of course, in the earliest days of the Church, Christians could own slaves, so just because the early Church did things in certain ways doesn’t automatically make those ways best or even desirable.
These arrogant, liberal bishops. Even the pope doesn’t have the authority to ban people from kneeling before God. Yet Card. Cupich does nothing about that Fr. Phlager! I have really had enough of these people.
So if one kneels in the Adiocese of Chicago one is disobedient? Hmm… no, not buying it. He was careful in his wording, but the Cardinal did not ban kneeling for Holy Communion.
Many in my Annapolis, Maryland parish bow before taking communion. We usually bow while the person in front of us is receiving. It makes me feel more reverent. All of the Eucharist Ministers bow when they are up at the altar. More and more parishioners in this large parish are bowing. 24/7 Adoration is strong.
Too many of us in New Zealand have been denied Holy Communion kneeling and on the tongue, or worse, yelled at in the middle of Mass for attempting to receive Our Lord respectfully. We might be a small country but too many of our bishops would be applauding Cupich right now. We’ve been told at various times over the years that we must not kneel in the Mass at all (we are a resurrection people), so little do they like it when we kneel for Holy Communion. We have whole parishes now that will not bend a knee to Our Lord, period!
Thanks Mark. It’s so concerning how the divide seems to be widening. Perhaps we may find solace in the fact that those who idolize the ‘60’s are slowly disappearing from the scene.
That's why they're getting so loud. Young people want traditional mass. They're having a hard time coping with the fact that their entire legacy was just a fashion. Good bye bell bottoms....
Unfortunately, my parish in West Vancouver stopped praying the St. Michael prayer after Mass a while ago - I miss it. Our Rosary group still pray it at the end of every Rosary🙏.
Thank you for this brilliant analysis of the current situation. Writing from France, where we also knew the worst excesses of V2, but things have been radically changing recently. More and more people kneel from the Sanctus to the Our Father, genuflex or kneel for Communion, and receive the Blessed host on the tongue, especially young people. Attendance at weekday masses is regularly increasing - we were about 60 this morning at the 7 o'clock Dawn Mass. Adult Christenings are at an all time high. Cupich's generation is on the go. At long last. Young priests know how essential it is to love, revere and adore Our Lord before any other consideration. God bless His Church and grant us the grace to serve His Beloved Son.
Merci, très encourageant. Vous pourriez aider si vous vouliez faire Adoration chaque jour devant le Tabernacle (meme si le Très Saint Sacrement n'est pas exposé) ou tous les jours où vous pouvez, au moins une demi-heure.

Pope Paul neither initiated nor designed the new Mass, nor did he abrogate the old Mass. He allowed the new Mass as an indult for those who wanted it and never gave bishops the authority to restrict or forbid priests from saying the Latin Tridentine Mass.
Dragon's tail swept away 1/3 of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth (Rev 12:4). Stars in the sky stand for cardinals, bishops, and priests. The swept away are those who lost their mission and became Satan's servants. We are seeing them now before our own eyes.
If I should ever be in a situation where kneeling and receiving on the tongue is not feasible, I would simply refrain from Communion and say the prayer of Spiritual Communion. Of course I am a 69 year old Traditionalist and have literally been through the mill since Vatican ll and have flushed it!! We did the kneeling at St Peters Cathedral in Scranton before Bishop James Timlin who to his credit never refused us. And years later, to many people’s joy, he allowed the FSSP to operate in the Diocese. Also, the SSPX has had a Parish ( Child Jesus Church) in Pittston, PA for the past 43 years! So we are richly blessed to have these locations to attend the Traditional Mass.
@@elainemgardens874 So you would refuse to receive Jesus rather than follow the teachings of Vatican II. But if we do not follow his guidance and teachings of the church we will be held accountable.
Where is Cupich coming from ? the blessed sacrament has been totally downgraded and people line up to take it as a sweetie in your hand. We should be kneeling to receive the host out of respect. The quicker he is put out to pasture the better.
The offertory prayer of the new Mass is taken from the Talmudic Sedar meal, the Passover meal. That meal was a commemororation of the Passover, not a sacrifice. It was established after the destruction of the Temple in 70AD. It has nothing to do with sacrifice. It was the Protestants who made their service a remembrance of the Last Supper, the Catholic Mass is not a remembrance of the Last Supper it is the Sacrifice of Calvary re-presented.
Maybe he had more to say about it to the Apostles between His glorious Resurrection and His Ascension; as well as the Holy Spirit on Pentacost and beyond. Tradition is as important as Holy Scripture.

I went to Mass in downtown Chicago a few months ago and their work-around to deny communion on the tongue was a card placed in the pews saying we should not approach to receive on the tongue because the ministers were old and had shaky hands and were worried they would drop the hosts if we didn't allow them to place it in our hands. 🙄
Yet the USCCB had no problem spending $20 million for the Eucharistic Revival- I’m not seeing ANY increase in Eucharistic Adoration since July ‘24. Not a very good ROI… 1:1 with Jesus is what moves hearts!
I believe it is time to do as St. Luke urges: "But when these things begin to happen, have courage, and lift up your heads; because your salvation is at hand." We humans may not know everything, but Satan knows much more and he knows his time is very limited so he is pulling out all the stops. Likewise, this Papacy and his minions know their time of terror and apostasy will be soon ending and they, too, are doing all they can to remove all tradition.
Even at the mention of the Name of Jesus, Paul and Timothy instruct us to kneel. It is even more important therefore, to do so when in His Presence and at the privilege of receiving Him into our bodies. 'Philippians 2 10 That at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God His Father.'
The word " Benedicet ", ie " Blessed it " in the Consecration of the Holy Sacrafice is left out of many transactions of the Consecration of the bread and wine. This was first omitted at the Protestant revolt because Protestants do not believe, in their own theology, of Blessing inanimate things. This why their prayer before meals is God is great and good. Let us THANK HIM for our food....and Catholics say BLESS U😮 41:26 😊S O LORD, AND THESE THY GIFTS WHICH WE ARE ABOUT TO RECIEVE. ETC
How i miss the ability to kneel at railing and receive although about a year ago i found myself at Mass in a church that had reception while kneeling at the rail. Much more respectful than being rushed in line and the chaos of too many EEMinisters trying to hurry up everyone to get it over. Wonder why reverance has declined? And chance for sacrilege so much greater standing in a line. I've seen people walk back to pews at funeral Mass with Host in hand...
I'll take my cue from the Angel of Portugal, during his third appearance at Fatima. This Angel who administered the Sacred Host on the tongue to Lucia, and gave the Chalice to Jacinta and Francisco to drink the Precious Blood. These children who were kneeling in reverence to the Eucharist, and to their Heavenly visitor. This is the prime example of the correct way to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I agree with your guest Mark about 'Fiduccia Supplicans' not being sacramental. There is not such thing as an unsacramental blessing. This means that if a priest gives a blessing to a gay couple and their union, he is blessing their sinful life, which is a sacralidge by him and a sacralidge for them. The Priest also neglects his duty for a call to repentance by the couple to end a sinful relationship. So really there is a whole host of sins being committed by giving these blessings. It condones that lifestyle which is a mortal sin in itself. 🙏
When I go on a trip, I wait to see if anyone is kneeling. If nobody kneels or receives on the tongue, I make a spiritual communion instead because I just can’t bring myself to compromise on this.
I went through the same thoughts when visiting a parish. Everyone standing receiving on the hand. I prayed for help and just before it was my turn to receive, one man in the line knelt. I took that as Jesus telling me it's ok. It's not me drawing attention to myself. It's doing the right thing. And you never know who may be positively effected by the witness.
@@una1940Hello Una. You have made a very good point about the elderly. I am not suggesting kneeling should be obligatory. Some are unable to kneel. Both ways are acceptable and we must not judge. As Mark suggested, it's something that requires discernment and is very personal. This is simply my own experience.
@ it’s just so tragic that we even have to be subjected to that kind of stress within our own “sanctuaries”. Anxiety and uncertainty should be the last thing we should feel at such a critical moment of our devotion and that is to my mind clearly the smoke of satan in our churches.
In France the times I have been there no one knelt during the consecration; I did and now I have read a post from a person from France who says many are kneeling now in France during the consecration. I am not saying what I did had an influence, however, adoration and thanksgiving will eventually bring many more to follow.
I'm Eastern Orthodox and we never kneel to receive communion, so some of this debate seems a bit odd to me. We also never kneel on Sundays for any service, and we never kneel on any day in Paschaltide. But we do kneel on weekdays outside Paschaltide, although not for receiving communion, as I mentioned. The shocking part to me is that RC bishops do as they please with no repercussions. In the East, know-it-all bishops lose their jobs. The laity do not sit around while the hierarchs run roughshod over the faith.
It's an East v West liturgical difference. In the West to stand before a king is to show contempt for him. Hence, why Latin Rite Catholics traditionally kneel from the Sanctus through the Roman Canon (Liturgy of the Eucharist) until after the 2nd ablution. In the East, they do not have the same cultural stigma about standing and so their liturgical posture more resemble the practice among Eastern Orthodox.
@@Desert-Father More to the point, Canon 20 of the Council of Nicaea forbids kneeling on Sundays and on all the days of Paschaltide (called Pentecost in Greek, meaning the 50 days after Pascha, not just the 50th day of Pentecost itself). The Orthodox view Latin kneeling with suspicion specifically because of Nicaea.
@michaeltres A disciplinary liturgical posture based on cultural differences. Not a matter that would be grounds for a definitive teaching. A disciplinary ruling that has been superseded by centuries of liturgical practice in the West and missals requiring that posture promulgated by the hierarchy of the Latin Church.
@@Desert-Father That's fine. RC practices have no bearing on my own life. I was just pointing out that the Orthodox would never agree with any ruling that superseded Nicaea.
Oh, please, do not talk. I was born orthodox and I converted to Catholicism. Orthodox cannot give any lessons. Orthodox Church is not even the Church of Christ. "You are Peter and on this Rock I will build MY CHURCH..." "My Church", NOT "My churches" !!! Jesus Christ only founded ONE Church and the Rock=Saint Peter was martyred, died and was buried IN ROME. The Catholic Church is being put to test by Jesus Christ right now, that's all. Jesus continued His sentence "...and the gates of hell will not prevail over it." What did He imply? "They will try." And, when satan tries, he doesn't joke. The Eastern Orthodox church is based on lies and it's full of scandalous priests who cannot be an example for anyone !!!
the 1970s were so bad for the reverence for the Mass. Horrible music, horrible architecture, the removal of beautiful statues and wonderfully designed altar railings, liturgical dance; all of it was terrible!
Altar rails were removed to remove the feeling of separation . I grew up practicing Catholic and went through the changes of the 60's with no problem. There is much beauty and love in worship. When in a Catholic church I found a wonderful closeness to God, a serenity. It is still there, but over time, the ordained leaders became more like the Pharacies where rules became more important. Seems to be getting worse.
The Holy Mass is a sacred meal that completes the Sacrifice which begins with the preparation of the victim followed by the sacrificing of the victim that concludes with the consuming the victim. It is a complete lack of understanding of the Mass to reduce it to a meal.
Fascinating discussion. I don't entirely agree with ultra traditionalists like Mr Chapp, but he does have a point about some of the abuses. I don't like the direction Francis is trying to take the Church in, as an ex Anglican, I've seen where that leads (total disaster). There must be some middle ground.
Yes I fund myself drawn to tradition (I never thought I would but then again I never thought about I at all). I was more to the left say 2 years ago and beyond. Now I se the absolute beauty in the Latin Mass etc. There is division but it never seemed that it was terminal at all just; "oh OK you like traditional themes and I'm more drawn to the modern but we can worship together. Like you say look what's happened to the Anglicans.
Careful! The 'middle ground' as you say, is what has opened the door to relativism. Labeling Dr. Chapp an ultraconservative seems very strange considering is all he has defended are the teachings of the Catholic Church!
@@56247 I said ultratraditionalist, not ultraconservative. There is a difference. Much as I dislike most of what Pope Francis says and does, I think he is right about the rigidity of ultratraditionalists and the danger of turning Latin or the Tridentine mass into idols. I've seen that happen with some Catholics. The devil sets many snares, and they apply equally in both liberal and traditionalist camps.
@@philiphumphrey1548 Sorry I did mean ultra-traditionalist- same problem though- the Catholic Church is founded on Scripture AND Tradition- if it is troubling to some, there are many Protestant churches that also believe that Tradition is a road block to Jesus. Consider iconoclasts over the centuries that view statues and pictures as 'idols'! How many stripped our churches of their beauty because people idolized the statues, stained glass and stone and woodwork! Based on your thought, we should probably do away with money, food and drink as Western civilization has largely turned those into idols.
If you meet a royal you suppose to bow as a sign of respect. In communion you kneel as a sign of respect to a true king. How dare anyone say he slows down communion. When I was a kid the priest alone gave communion and it took 15 minutes. Now people want quicknservice with no respect for God. This why our churches are empty - no real respect for God and priests and bishops counting money loss rather than loss of souls.
@@deniscurless7809 You are so arrogant! How dare you think that other communicants are less devout than yourself. How could any elderly person kneel and get up by themselves?
A Catholic priest has far more responsibilities than a protestant pastor and a family takes away from the parish flock. True priests serve ...since V11 I cannot believe some of the things people think.
Cardinals cannot ban a religious practice. The problem with Catholic Churches is architectural. The Anglicans kept their communion rails which makes it easier to kneel. The communion rails that have been retrofitted are awkward. I watched a priest practically fall over because he had no room to walk.
A priest told us that MacDonald's was invented by two brothers named MacDonald who watched Catholics take communion. Ask Cupich if he would like fries with his Takeaway communion.
Altar rails were such a respectful part of communion.
A new Order of Priests, Pro Ecclesia Sancta, in our parish have instructed us to receive kneeling at the communion rail; it is so wonderful!
They are also ancient with St Augustine of Hippo mentioning them.

HOW CAN KNEELING BE WRONG: For the first 1000 years people kneeled. How is it suddenly wrong!!!!
Did the Apostles kneel before Christ at the last Supper ?
This is false antiquarianism. There is a natural evolution of these things. Forcing people to stop kneeling after they have since the first centuries is banning it. Kneeling has been the Latin Church's custom since the Days of the Roman persecution. Romans always knelt before their emperor. God is ours, which is why we kneel.@@melarrow6202
They were lying down as was the custom in those days.
@ Right
These arrogant, liberal bishops. Even the pope doesn’t have the authority to ban people from kneeling before God. Yet Card. Cupich does nothing about that Fr. Phlager! I have really had enough of these people.
Me too!
@@tomm6423 You should be obedient to your pastors. God has placed them there to guide you. You need to be humble.
Yes, they are suppose to bow before receiving the Eucharist!
@@sharoncrooks7881 Resurrection people(???). LoL!!! Not so sure of that! Most people need to learn how to walk before they can fly.
Who cares what Cupich says? Just do as you always have. Don't worry about it.
That's right, stand up to this bully, as that what he seems to be!
Excellent conversation, gents! Thank you Fr. Z for the recommendation!
In the Spokane diocese, some of his priests described him as "intimidating." THAT I have seen.
How long will God endure this mockery?
I have knelt 2x since learning of this new ban and my pastor has not "corrected" me. Cardinal Cupich may have over-reached here.
Good for you! Well done!
Unfortunately, my parish in West Vancouver stopped praying the St. Michael prayer after Mass a while ago - I miss it. Our Rosary group still pray it at the end of every Rosary🙏.
Go to the TLM and you will find all that you long for. You may have to travel long distances to find it but the effort will be worth it..
Thank you very much!
Thanks
Much appreciated!
The Spirit of 1789 prevails. Karl Rahner would be pleased. All this illustrates where the lines are drawn as it relates to the Protoevangelium. The enemy is very much disciplined and militant. I am sure he very much appreciates wishy washy Liturgies.

Thank you for this conversation: we need to view the Mass as Supreme Sacrifice.
YES! It is so humbling to think that we are invited to the Last Supper!

It would be unlikely then that Cardinal Cupich believes in the Real Presence? The Eucharist embarrasses him.
No scandalous thing that Cupich does would surprise me!
It does draw attention. To Jesus.
I will continue bowing/kneeling before Our Lord until the day I die. Sounds like the bishop, along with other bishops, have a hidden agenda. Sad. IMO
The Pontiff has been appointed by the Holy Spirit and all we are asked to do is follow his guidance. If he guides wrong, which I have not seen any sign of yet, he will be held accountable. But if we do not follow his guidance and teachings of the church we will be held accountable.
Thank you. The 'order' was to bow. People did for a few months, then nobody did.
Where is Cupich coming from ? the blessed sacrament has been totally downgraded and people line up to take it as a sweetie in your hand. We should be kneeling to receive the host out of respect. The quicker he is put out to pasture the better.
Let's just say it's a mess. Only the restoration of the latin liturgy and strict adherence to the rubrics will sort this out. In my opinion.
Maybe because Jesus himself said this do in remembrance of me.
Maybe he had more to say about it to the Apostles between His glorious Resurrection and His Ascension; as well as the Holy Spirit on Pentacost and beyond. Tradition is as important as Holy Scripture.
@@greybone777 That's nothing to do with what the post said, pay attention.

@@DeliaGibbons He has to think of all his parishioners, the majority of which are elderly and very devout. If I knelt down I would not be able to get up. And most of the congregation would be the same. It is not feasible in a crowded church. The times to kneel are at the Consecration and “Behold the Lamb of God” . It is what is in your head and heart that matters when receiving Christ’s Body and Blood.
@una1940 I understand that. I have difficulty getting up from kneeling on the floor but not from the altar rail
THEY CAN NOT CHANGE THE WORDS OF CONSICRATING The Bread and wine; INTO THE BODY , BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY!!!
Have they tried to do that?
The documents of Vatican II were written ambiguously specifically to allow the "ecclesiology" we see currently. Sooner or later Vatican II will need to be sidelined.

I believe it is time to do as St. Luke urges: "But when these things begin to happen, have courage, and lift up your heads; because your salvation is at hand." We humans may not know everything, but Satan knows much more and he knows his time is very limited so he is pulling out all the stops. ETC
Could it possibly be that the cardinal does not believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist ~ just a thought. 🤔
Joseph Fessio, SJ, remains correct.
Tell Cupich to mind his own danged business, especially since He is no longer interested in he Catholic Faith😊
This is the Body of Christ!
Totally agree.
@@maeve5378 How would the elderly getup of the floor? Did the apostles kneel to receive the Eucharist from Jesus?

What about his forbidding the Institute of Christ the King from offering Mass in the church they are restoring in Chicago.
Chapp is certainly orthodox in his theology and opinions, but “ultra traditionalist”? He doesn’t even attend the Latin Mass!
