Tristan talking about survival mode he’s really referring to Maslow‘s hierarchy of need which is a fundamental theory. I’ve been in the field for 40 years and now I teach adults in the field. People need to realize that children in foster care are not “acting up“ they are in survival mode experiencing trauma. Thank you, Tristan for sharing your story.
I relate to Tristan so much. And it’s so weird how much he feels like he BELONGS in this family. Like Aaron truly changed when Tristan came around. It seems at least to have largely pulled him out of his depression and grief. Aaron seems so much happier. Tristan truly is a piece of this family.

We have two kids that we adopted through foster care when they were babies. They are teenagers now but one of them recently had someone tell her that we loved her the best we could but she wasn't our biological daughter. I was in shock because she is my daughter in every sense of the word. I have never looked at her as something other than my daughter and I love her with every part of my being. It made me sad (mad) that someone would put that into her head. I am blessed with my two children and they are the children of my heart. I agree with the statement of being prepared to love them like your own. You will never regret that choice. ❤
@@that1jesuschick_rebekah it was never a secret. Ever. She had known she was adopted from the moment she could understand. You misunderstood the comment. Someone just told her that there was no way we could love her because we didn't give birth to her, which was a hurtful and ignorant thing to say to her.
I think you guys, if you have time and energy, should set up a "Pettit Foster Fund" or something similar. And people donate to it, and you buy clothes or basic hygiene products or even food or medical supplies and drop them off at Foster Homes and Children's hospitals etc. One problem I have with donating to charity is that you never know if they will spend the money efficiently or take a huge chunk to live off etc, but I must say I honestly would trust you guys to use that money efficiently (Unlike governments with Tax money lol)

I can’t watch these without getting emotional. My past never included foster care or adoption officially but I have a family that did take me in a few years back in their hearts and I have progressed quicker and easier with them then I did on my own. It’s always hard to hear how many kids need love and support and don’t have it.
I wonder what kind of life I would have if I would of been with a family like your's. Me and my twin sister were given up or taken away at the age of 5 and put in to a foster home with an acholic abuser. I cried for the first 3 days straight. I could go on for hours but never the less I am so thankful for you and homes like yours because those kids need you guys. I am blessed because I know God's love and mercy was and is always with me. These kids privacy is non existent. Everything is aired online and this could have negative repercussions for their career. All their health issues and mental illness is aired online. There is money being gained for adopting this many kids. They also vlog 24/7 which could impact the kids grades.. how do you even study in peace with all that noise? They are exploiting their kids for money. Being adopted with this kind of family can't be good for your mental health when young. I understand why some of their kids are homeschooled so that they avoid scrutiny from their peers. They have no privacy.
@@Calvin.rx1l your opinion is valid but what we see from a 20 minute video isn’t 24/7. I feel like crystal and Aaron’s children have a voice of their own and are not afraid to use it. If they don’t want to be in the video they don’t need to be. Jake is a prime example.I myself went through foster care and adopted by my foster family. Granted my adopted family didn’t do UA-cam but with your comment about money..once you are adopted there is no more money coming through.. when you are in foster care there is a monthly amount the foster parents got for you.. for your clothing, rent, food, school supplies. I guess my point is don’t comment unless you have something positive to say because these children are reading these comments and you have to think about how they may feel about your negative comments towards their parents whom they love.

as a former foster parent, the hardest part for me was just dealing with the case worker turnover and the case workers themselves. We were lucky to have a couple of great ones and definitely a few that were so hard. and we kept having to go over and over and over to give chances and my daughters placement lasted for 4 1/2 years and never had visit unsupervised yet we lingered in the court system. I hold high regard for the birth parents doing incredible loving things for their child but all of the trauma caused was completely unnecessary. after that 4.5 years and another 6 months or so.... i adopted! which is incredible. but the trauma from the "departmnet" work was the hardest and most traumatizing.

I would say open your home only if you are willing to take on all of the challenges and able to be a positive role model for the child! Recently in our town a foster mom had a boy for one week and she sat on him in the front yard of her home after he ran away to go to the neighbors for help. She went and got him back and sat on him! He was 10 years old! And she killed him. If that can’t be horrible she also worked at cps!

I watched The Sound of Hope movie and was astonished at the number of Foster children in need of homes. Today in 1 area of my state they have listed 10 kids from infants to teenagers, most are siblings, in need.
My Grandma caught my sister and I pretending to smoke cigarettes. We never used a lighter but she still disciplined us as if we had. We both had to write 3 pages of I will not smoke cigarettes. My sister is younger than me but she is like a lil big sister. Always does everything first to show me it’s safe. We got caught again with her finishing the last page for me so my Grandma tore it up and made us write it again. Neither of us smoke cigarettes nor ever did.

I started my journey as a social worker about 3 years ago, around the same time I discovered your channel! I just graduated with my MSW and am taking the ASWB exam in exactly a week!!!! Ahaaaa manifesting a pass! So proud of you Tristan! Don’t rely on your accomplishments to feel like your best self! You’re amazing and have already achieved so much to be proud of! Everything else is just extra! Lollll a controlled fire is fun! When you were speaking about your experiences with housing as an adolescent. It really hit home since I am working in emergency housing on Long Island. I have seen an influx of young teens and adolescents in the system. It’s so hard the system is not meant to work with kids. Between living in motels, group homes, or mandated treatment for troubled teens. Teens do not have support needed to help them over come their traumatic experiences. The system is so broken, everyday we work towards making positive changes! Keep your head up and do what is best for your future! Never be afraid to ask for help and everything will lay in place!
Aces and Paces study is an amazing one that stands out. It basically shows that traumatic experiences as a child and negatively impact children in so many ways (physically and mentally ill). Paces are ways that we can counter balance the aces to best serve the individual! I love this since many kinds of trauma can happen it shows it’s not your destiny’s. That is based on Maslow's high Archy of need. Every person is on this pyramid. There are levels and you can not move up to the next level without getting your needs met at each level. As teachers we study this. It is so important because I was teaching in an area where my kids were on that first level., which is basic survival.
No child should ever have to feel survival mood or going on a job interview. We adopted my sister when she was 9 years old after she was in 4 foster homes with her brother. She had an intellectual disability similar to Jamie. Hearing Tristin talk about it really confirms home much I hate our system because all kids need love. My sister completed our family. Thank goodness for fostercare but it needs to change. I know many people who use foster care for the money. Thanks for being a great family.
I was adopted at 4 yrs old but when I was in preschool a man in a tie came and tried to take me out of my home. All the way through highschool I worried about people in suits and ties trying to take me away!
I read a book about a guy who grew up in a children's home. This was back in the late 50s, maybe the 60s it was before foster care. In this book, he said that although growing up in an institution like children's home was not perfect and the older kids had cabins 4 to a cabin, it was not awful there were a lot of very detected people who work in the home and took time with the kids. Of course, they had chores, but there was a lot of free time to play. And he made life-long friends. If you were taken from your parents at that time, there was no going back. He said 80% of the kids went on to college because in the home, education was a top priority. Ronald Reagan administration came up with the idea of foster care so kids could be and feel part of what it was like to be part of a family. I don't feel foster care has been very successful when you see the number of homes kids go in and out of.
It was always the white car for me. The one with the emblem. I saw one after 15 years. I thought I was healed. I wasn't ready. Thank you, Jesus, for my strength.
My daughter is raising her second 😂cousin. She’s had him since birth , he is now two ! But the system keeps giving the mom much longer. She is my niece but no capable of raising this child . He is the 8 th she has lost . Why do they give these awful parent so much leeway when she can t get off drugs or keeps getting in trouble with the law ! They are not in it for the child . They make him visit her and he always comes back so upset ! I wish we could make the system better and make it not for profit !
Congratulations on being such wonderful parents that can produce such well rounded and positive young adults. I have a question though ….. have you ever had a ‘non success’? Have any of the children you have taken in, got into trouble or pushed you to the limit! My daughter works with troubled children (in Australia) and these children are not in foster care because they have ‘messed up’ and next step is detention. These kids are products of troubled homes, parents who are on drugs or in prison, or parents who just don’t want them. The cycle needs to be broken … but how is the issue!
I know u guys primarily focus on foster care and adoption but I'd love to know more about surrogacy and the experience you had (crystal) I've recently offered my womb to someone else and just wondered what I'm getting myself into
@@nitashashank3044 I watched a show about surrogacy where the people ALL involved would meet up. For all type’s receiving & giving. Try & find something like that. It’s how they also picked someone to be their donor.
I wish that I had foster parents like you guys I was just a number going house to house I believe that if I had a good home I would not been a mom at 14 year old by the time I hit 21 I was a mom of 5 kids

They donate $ time & clothes, shoes etc without help. They are big on charity

That is based on Maslow's high Archy of need. Every person is on this pyramid. There are levels and you can not move up to the next level without getting your needs met at each level. As teachers we study this. It is so important because I was teaching in an area where my kids were on that first level., which is basic survival.

No child should ever have to feel survival mood or going on a job interview. We adopted my sister when she was 9 years old after she was in 4 foster homes with her brother. She had an intellectual disability similar to Jamie. Hearing Tristin talk about it really confirms home much I hate our system because all kids need love. My sister completed our family. Thank goodness for fostercare but it needs to change. I know many people who use foster care for the money. Thanks for being a great family.

I treat my foster kids as my own! I telll them they have my wwhole heart and soul!
I was adopted at 4 yrs old but when I was in preschool a man in a tie came and tried to take me out of my home. All the way through highschool I worried about people in suits and ties trying to take me away!
Tristan being an adult now understands what happened in foster care and he did find a good family in the Pettit family.❤️😋

I read a book about a guy who grew up in a children's home. This was back in the late 50s, maybe the 60s it was before foster care. In this book, he said that although growing up in an institution like children's home was not perfect and the older kids had cabins 4 to a cabin, it was not awful there were a lot of very detected people who work in the home and took time with the kids. Of course, they had chores, but there was a lot of free time to play. And he made life-long friends. If you were taken from your parents at that time, there was no going back. He said 80% of the kids went on to college because in the home, education was a top priority. Ronald Reagan administration came up with the idea of foster care so kids could be and feel part of what it was like to be part of a family. I don't feel foster care has been very successful when you see the number of homes kids go in and out of.
Reagan administration did not "come up with the idea of foster care". It's been around for generations before he was in office.
It was always the white car for me. The one with the emblem. I saw one after 15 years. I thought I was healed. I wasn't ready. Thank you, Jesus, for my strength.
My daughter is raising her second 😂cousin. She’s had him since birth , he is now two ! But the system keeps giving the mom much longer. She is my niece but no capable of raising this child . He is the 8 th she has lost . Why do they give these awful parent so much leeway when she can t get off drugs or keeps getting in trouble with the law ! They are not in it for the child . They make him visit her and he always comes back so upset ! I wish we could make the system better and make it not for profit !

I have a question though ….. have you ever had a ‘non success’? Have any of the children you have taken in, got into trouble or pushed you to the limit!
My daughter works with troubled children (in Australia) and these children are not in foster care because they have ‘messed up’ and next step is detention. These kids are products of troubled homes, parents who are on drugs or in prison, or parents who just don’t want them.
The cycle needs to be broken … but how is the issue!

@@nitashashank3044 I watched a show about surrogacy where the people ALL involved would meet up. For all type’s receiving & giving. Try & find something like that. It’s how they also picked someone to be their donor.
