Gibraltar is British by the Treaty of Utrecht. As British sovereignty is based on compliance with the provisions of that treaty, it should be complied with and respected in its entirety, which establishes that Gibraltar must be cut off from the rest of Spain by land. Apart from the land of the isthmus where the Airport is built, it was not ceded in the Treaty of Utrecht, but usurped in the 19th century, when, faced with an epidemic of cholera on the rock, Spain gave Great Britain permission to install a Hospital in said isthmus and They never left there anymore, building the airport in World War II.

Its best comparable to another territory right across from it: Ceuta. It borders another foreign nation, but is culturally a part of the owner in a way that would make them joining the mainland preposterous
Ceuta was Spanish before Morocco even existed as a country, it wasn’t stolen from Morocco. The uk people kicked the Spaniards out so obviously they preferred to stay British.

The Gibralteans love having Spanish people over to work in higher-wage jobs and need them there. Indeed UK has one of the largest diasporas of Spanish already here in the UK for that very purpose. However, Spain seems to be using this as a tool in Brexit negotiations but the UK won't be pushed around. Yet the UK has it's own tool. If Scotland leaves the UK, then it forces a split within every country of the EU, most of all Spain who'll likely lose Catalonia first.
Spain is one to shout about getting it back when they have several territories in Morocco
@@Iamtheliquor Really? Well there you go. I was hoping the economic set up that benefits both our countries can continue. Further I don't want scotland to leave, nor do I wish Spain or any European country to split up. Also the British love Spain and visit even more than Australia, they may think why bother then.
@@jamiearnott9669 I agree with you. I’m making a point that Spain want Gibraltar back even though there have been several referendums, but they are unwilling to relinquish their territories in Morocco. Nor do I want Scotland to leave and I firmly believe they won’t if, and that’s a big if, they get another referendum. I’m also British and yeah sure plenty of us go to Spain on holiday. Personally, it’s not my cup of tea. More due to our fellow Brits turning some resorts into “Blackpool with sunshine”.
@@Iamtheliquor I agree completely too. Although only been to Catalonia once, but had a fantastic time and I know Spanish professionals that live and work in UK. Indeed Benidorm is like a kitsch culture now However both sides gain economically for sure
@@jamiearnott9669 I’ve only been twice to Spain on holiday. Not for me. Been plenty of times for work. Driven all over from north to south, east to west. People are great. Its just the costas where they aren’t the nicest, but seeing with what they have to put up with from tourists, I’m not surprised. Northern Spain is a real gem. A must see for anyone.
Love how pissed Spain is about Gibraltar when they have territories in Morocco they're also adamant about keeping.
You know that that cities are not colonies and belong to spain even before Morocco existed?

Ironic that Gibraltar is listed as a colony in the UN but Ceuta and Melilla are not, they are not the same case.
@@albertobogaz5047 funny .. Morocco was a country before the iberian kingdoms unite and gave us what is today spain
@@specialone3209 Morocco didn't existed until 1956, before of that was a medieval kingdom without any kind of central administration
Spain has North African territories. The Spaniards shouldn't be talking.
You know that are cities that belongs to spain even before Morocco existed? Gibraltar is spanish
@@albertobogaz5047 Ah yes, good ol Spanish propaganda at work...if you ACTUALLY did your research, you'd learn Ceuta and Melilla belonged to the Sultanate of Fez (what we now call Morocco) before they were conquered by the Portuguese and Spanish respectively. Ceuta was Fez land in 1387, and conquered by Portuguese in 1415. Melilla was Fez land at the same time, and was conquered by the Spanish in 1497.

If Spain had to the choice of getting Gibraltar but seceding Ceuta and Melilla to Morocco, do you think they would say yes?
No, they wouldn't. Spain is determined to hang on to Ceuta and Melilla, but just enjoys complaining about Gibraltar.
¡NO!
No, gibraltar doesn't have a real Spanish population anymore, but ceuta and melilla do
Ceuta and Melilla? You forgot: Alhucemas, Islas de Chafarinas, Penon de Velez de la Gomera! All Spanish Territory. They are part of Andalucia for administration purposes, coming under Cadiz. The elect a representative to the Spanish Parliament, the Guardia Nacional are posted to the areas, as are the Aduana - Customs Officers.
Do you really think Spain will give them up, if it managed to control Gibraltar? You have more chance of walking backwards to Betelguise in your birthday suit, turning round and returning back to Earth. It shouldn't take you very long as its about 600 light years away!
They probably only claim Gibraltar as giving up could make them look weak, despite it being hypocritical as they have their own (albeit larger) Gibralter’s right across the strait
Ma Cow really got me:)
Fun fact: Gibraltar 🇬🇮 is named after the Arabic name "gabal tariq" ( جبل طارق ) which means "the mountain of Tariq" and Tariq or Tariq bin Ziyad is the name of the Muslim commander who have conquered the Peninsula
I have read elsewhere that it means bridge of Tar referring to the protected crossing of Tar from North Africa.
Incidentally and fun fact Britain has had Gibraltar longer than the Spanish following their defeat of the Moors around 1500.
Actually it’s Jebel al Tarik, mountain of Tarik, the North African conquerer in the 8th century.
Because a magical thing called colonialism, not complaining tho
The British captured Gibraltar after a 7 year seige aided by the Dutch.
Would love to live there, but I'm sure immigration is super tight being such a small place!
Is cristal clear why it became British. Why it's still there is incomprehensible.
Because Spain doesn't and never will have the facilities to win a war against the UK ever again

The Brits took Gibraltar with the aid of the Dutch.
Spain and the United Kingdom are and will continue to be friends. We Spaniards complain that Gibraltar engages in unfair competition, not about losing a piece of land. Andalusia cannot compete in any way with a tax haven.

Plenty of Spaniards moaning here about how difficult it is for them to work there after Brexit. I seem to remember the Spaniards locking off Gibraltar for years when I was a kid🤔
No, Gibraltar is not part of the UK while Ceuta is considered core part of Spain
@@Lucas24997 Attempts to differentiate cueta and melilla from the situation with Gibraltar are hilarious.
Lmao at the Spanish trying to justify their own colonies. The local people of Ceuta and Mellila were killed or conquered and a Spanish population was planted. That's definitely colonialism...
Also I love the idea of a people ruling themselves = colony, but a people being ruled from elsewhere = free.
Spanish hypocrisy is some of my favourite 🤣🤣🤣
I don't know why the british stuck their noses on the Spanish Succession on the first place, less why the heck would they get a colony for it and even less why they are still keeping it nowdays. But I guess that if u ask and indian, an egyptian, an argentinian... they would ask the same. British being british, is the way they are.
Gibraltar is an Overseas Territory & so not part of the Realm.
