Wanna hear my latest mixtape?
Ya like jazz?
Thx for the heads up XD
Wanna see my 1TB file of hentai with lolis?
A trick they also used was dropping a kings shilling into a jug off beer, when the unsuspecting victim got to the bottom of the jug and discovers the coin, the pressgang jumped into action because that was classed as excepting it. I may have got it mixed up with the army pressgangs? They got around the problem by putting glass bottoms on the jugs.
Thanks for Loving my comment, means alot 👍
I really hope english isn't your first language....
Lawphin and the suvey said 🖕
Pferd Schild cool I did not know that 👍
I have five old jugs with the glass bottoms... God I love our history 🇬🇧
That was army recruitment. Accepting any amount of money from an army recruiter by any means, fair or foul, counted as enlistment.
“As I walked out on a London Street, the press gang there I chanced to meet...”
Whole lyrics please
Simple History
Press Gang
As I walked out on London Street A press gang there I chanced to meet They asked me if I'd join the fleet On board of a man-o-war, boys
Come brother shipmates tell to me What kind of treatment they give you That I may know before I go On board of a man-o-war, boys
When I got there to my surprise All they had told me was shocking lies There was a row and a jolly old row On board of a man-o-war, boys
The first thing they done they took me in hand They lashed me with a ?tar of a strand? They flogged me till I could not stand On board of a man-o-war, boys
Now I was married and me wife's name was Grace 'Twas she that led me to shocking disgrace It's oft I'd curse her ugly face On board of a man-o-war, boys
When next I get may foot on shore To see them London girls once more I'll never go to sea no more On board of a man-o-war, boys
recorded by Ewan MacColl on "Black And White" (1982) "From medieval times, the English crown claimed the power to press able-bodied subjects into the navy for the defense of the realm. With the passage of time, the power was abused and the press gang, invading the small towns and roaming the countryside, became a truly feared 'tradition', as witnessed by the scores of press gang songs. In 1853 the long service system was introduced and the need for press gangs virtually disappeared."
Please, in verses. This is just too much to take in.
Salpeteroxid fixed it
Much Obliged :)
Press Gang:thesailorsayswot

and that's how they operated
interesting
Plz notice me
It's called "conscription",not forced recruitment
You could say that the navy wasn't very impressed with its numbers
Amateur Historian Why do chevrons appear next to your user name?
Sans Handlebars they’re sponsoring this channel
its numbers were very ”impressed” though
"That's just conscription with extra steps"
Justin Y. *Rick and Morty reference!!!*
Someone's going to get laid in college
More like conscription with far fewer steps.
Hey it's you
No not at all, in this case we don't pay them and the're helping the people.
Being kidnapped obviously seems scary. I can just imagine that. You get home after a long day at work as a man selling fish. You're tired and go home to your house, and the sun is setting. Where you close the door and head up to your room. You fall fast asleep, but what seems like an hour or two later, you wake up to a creaking outside your room. It's pitch black and you brush it off as hearing things. You think you hear the door open, but not sure. You slowly open your eyes and see three figures standing above you. Before you can say anything they drag you forcefully out of your room. You try to retaliate but it's no use, they are much stronger than you. They bring you outside. You see a ship illuminated from the moonlight and thrown on it. Now one of the unlucky men to be forced to work or die.
A practice that encourages people to forcibly join the navy was universally unpopular? I never would’ve guessed that!!!
Movie Man making people join something against their will is universally unpopular
how do you encourage someone to forcibly do something?
Art V. Easy, shame or coerce them into doing so. A very good example is the White Feather movement in Britain during WWI
Join voluntarily or be conscripted, not really a choice is it?
Respect the whalers!
This happened to me twenty years back.
One evening I was propping up my local bar, and must have nodded off...
Next thing I know I woke up in a mortgaged three bed semi, my car had five doors and lumbar support, and the other half would rather spend Sunday Morning in IKEA, instead of me spending Sunday morning inside of her!
A lifetimes service aboard HMS Adulthood...
Resident Elect And you may say to yourself, "My God, what have I done?"
If you were a qualified sailor you might be looking over your shoulder in the tavern..

Put him to work until he collapses, put him to work until he collapses, put him to work until he collapses. Early in the morning!
Sharper Mage53 throw him in the drunken navy
Gee mr krabs you're looking all sweaty again.
Shoot him through the heart with a loaded pistol
Shoot him through the heart with a loaded pistol
Shoot him through the heart with a loaded pistol

Flamescale 23 It's because I'm a sponsor of the channel. 😁

One thing they used to do to impressed men was cut their pants waistbands and belts, that way their (often bound) hands would have to hold up their pants to keep them from falling off and they couldn't run. Also helped that most of them didn't know how to swim.
"Shortage of qualified seamen was common during the war"
Congratulations, you have joined the Royal Navy. Do not try to escape.
“Press Gang” sounds like a rap song
BulletBill110 could be a good name for a band too
"Press Gang": Feat Post-Malone.
Much worse rap song than 'Gucci Gang'
Gooshee gaeng
Now I understand how they managed to fill their ships with so many people!
Who would win
Some guys with weird hats or
some innocent BOIS
BOIS
Retired US Merchant Marine here. During the Gold Rush in San Francisco there was a lot of this going on. That was where the term " getting shanghaied" came from. All the ships that came into San Francisco back then were losing their crews for the gold fields. The captains were desperate for men to crew up their ships and return to the east coast.
You guys should become a television show
Yeh :D
No they shouldnt.cable news is dying,no one watches tv anymore. The best this show could possibly do is maybe an on demand service.
@@chloroxbleach8561 I‘m pretty sure that's what he meant man, almost no (if any) UA-cam channels right now could even dream of making a show that goes on Cable.
Son: I wanna join the army.
Father: Ah yes, the navy. Good choice.
Son: No, farther, I said-
Father: The navy, yes, I know.
This was a really informative video and helps explains some of the reasoning for the War of 1812.
"Eyyyyyyy........ mind if I harpoon you for forcing my friend Jimmy into the Navy? Thank you!" *stabs*
When you posted the "caption this" picture, I thought about posting something about getting boned in the rear-end, little did I know the video would literally be about getting boned in the rear-end through conscription.
First Last I thought that too.
I can’t see it
First Last Some land lubbers are born silver hook in hand Davy Jones knows they can't help themselves arg. It ain't me It ain't me I ain't no Mr. Krabs son.
Lil Student Loan Debt neither can the Bone-e
First Last why you have a symbol near your name and what is the meaning of it
The dutch said people could get a free meal, on of the nicest for the poor (there were not a lot of poor people in the golden age :) ) and after the meal the bartender would ask money for but the person can never pay this of course. So the bartender said join the VOC and you'll get this meal for free or go to prison. You know what he'd choose ;). And the bartender would get some money for the VOC as a thank for the new crewman.
They were not imPRESSED. Ba dum tisk.
God, Yang can make a better pun than that.
1:04 Hey Kid want some Colonialism?
LOL
Metal Triops 😂😂😂😂
@@metaltriops5957 did you just lol your own comment?
@@joachim673 He's a communist, so it's OUR comment.
Conscription but even more unethical :)
edit: omg 400 likes lol
edit 2: justin y. pls dont beat my comment
Screechy how’d you get that insignia next to your name?
ive been a sponsor for two months, they give you a little badge for supporting them :)
Conscription is not unethical.
I AM ALIVE !!!!! Well you have to serve your country and repay it for everything it did to you.
How did you comment 1 week ago, when this video came out today?????
I really really enjoy the little sound effects throughout the videos. It's a really nice little touch that ties it all together.
Feels good to sponsor even if it's a little
This channel has taught me more about history than school ever did 😂
I remember this when I was learning this from American history when I was in 8th grade, this is when Americans get pressed ganged and that leads to the war of 1812 and they hurt their own eco by blockading themselves and to keep American sailors from leaving so British ships dont pick them up
Feminazi Frequency Ehh, we kind of wanted Ontario regardless. It was as much about territorial expansion as anything else. Impressment made for a good excuse though.
Please do Yugoslav, Greek, Italian and Soviet Anti-fascist guerilla groups, the Partisans.
Good idea
:)
Yes
ΖΗΤΩ ΤΟ ΕΑΜ! ΖΗΤΩ Η ΣΟΒΙΕΤΙΚΗ ΕΝΩΣΗ!
Theodore Nezis Nice to know that. My close relative served in Yugoslav Partisans (He was young so he was just helping with weaponary etc.) and he is still alive today at age of 89...
Back at my home, this is called enslavement.
Not really, in the navy, you get paid.
Andrew McCloud So, some slaves got paid. The point is that in both cases they were forced into doing something they didn’t want to do in the first place.
The exception to the merchant ships was if they flew the yellow flag from their mast or if from the Dutch East Indies or private indian companies
This video also reminds me about the uss Constitution
You could say they weren’t very impressed by their new home
*boos from the crowd*
Thanks folks I’ll be here all week
can you do the war of 1812 next?
Interesting, never knew that before. And that is why this channel is awesome!
1:05
*whispers*
It's free real estate
One day you're getting tanked at a pub, eyeing a wench who may or may not have a severe case of crabs, the next you're swabbing the poop deck and your only company is other men during a time when toilet paper was not a commodity, all because some jack the ripper looking dude thought you needed something to do.
Note: I am sponsor of this channel which is why I am able to post a few days in advance. You should become one too. I get that question a lot.
Can you make a video on the war of 1812, not a lot of people know about it that much and I would love to see you do one
Certainly!
Simple History can you also do the texas revolution not alot of people remember the Alamo
Nein yes like the battle of new orleans
Lil Texan boy The gators ate well that day.
benn454 lol
America: NOOOOO YOU CANT JUST CONSCRIPT OUR CITIZENS INTO YOUR NAVY
Britain: haha press gang go bang
The background music sounds like they're singing it as a church hymn lol
The navy requisitioned sandwiches as a means of helping sailors feed themselves while tending to their duties. Thus they invented the press sandwich.
Pls make a video about Bataan Death March on Philippines.
*flashbacks intensifies*
"Hey Nigel, great to see you mate. Say you look down mate."
"Hey George. Ah it's me bloody wedding next week."
"Well thats good isn't it?"
"Not really. I do not want to go through with this. The more time I spend with her, the less I want to go through with it."
"You know Nigel, I may have an idea."
"Let me hear it."
"Alright, how about me and a few blokes from his Majesty's Navy interrupt your wedding and "recruit" you into the Navy. Then well go out and get bloody pissed."
"Hmm. And she'll never know because I've been pressed into the Navy and lost at sea. You're a genius George. Thanks a lot."
"No problem lad."

Rule britannia britannia rule the waves
Mlg British Empire Your empire is dead. The US Navy rules the waves now.
benn454 ikr rip British empire the empire which made the modern world
More like it's own international waters, Benn.
"Press Gangs" make me think newspaper reporters and paparazzi going down the streets as they snap their fingers.
It wasn’t really forced, they’re just walk into a pub, take the most drunk person, and he’d wake up sober on a ship.
In the Netherlands (and maybe other countries) bartenders would 'give' food and drinks to young man, and when they needed to pay they couldn't afford the bill, so they were send to the navy for a year or two
make a video for bulgaria since it has pretty interesting history
British Government: We don't have enough seamen for our Navy! What should we do?
Person A: Violently conscript civilians living in villages?
Person B: Take crewmen already serving aboard merchant ships by force?
Person C: Actually make serving in the Navy a viable career option?
*British Government glares at Person C*
*Tosses Person C out of the window*
Good video i started sponsoring today
nice :)
You may debate the awesomeness of the American system, but with no queen, the rule of rights at least paved the way to open freedom without rebuttle
Conscription in steroids. 😅
The expression "I'm impressed" means something new now
You did greece ww1, greece was even more important in ww2 you could do that. BTW you could perhaps do the greek disaster of 1922 or a video about Ioannis Capodistrias the first and best governor if greece, who was murdered
They should probably make a movie about this, like some guy gets forced into the Royal Navy and has the fight his own people or something like that.
Can you please do the War of 1812
I'm up for work in 6 hours, yet here we are boys
Forced
Speechless
I love the graphics its very easy explanatory for children.
This is quite a forgotten piece of history that needs to be reminded to us as it was a crime after all.
I always thought that if you can't find enough willing soldiers to fight your war, maybe you should just accept at that point that you've lost. Forced service is never justified.
Gamepro Wizard you clearly no notgibg about war
Gamepro Wizard that's not how it works
People hated it and it wasn't ideal but it helped us Brits rule the waves back then and have the best Navy!
Wasn't ideal is a bit of an understatement!
So conscription but before conscription?
Good vid! I didn't exit when the end ad came on for once
Do a Video about WW2 Bomber planes...
SovietChaos 1945 they already did a video about the B-17
Impressment was one of the causes of the war of 1812. Americans were fed up with it which led to naval conflict in the carribean sea and the Atlantic aswell

The British navy mostly attacked American merchant ships en-rout to or from Europe, and played a huge factor in the United States declaring war in 1812 like the video mentioned. The young nation did not have very many means of protection against any foreign power looking to board ships and steal supplies, trade goods, and man power even before the war. In response to this, the United States built 6 war frigates: USS United States, USS Chesapeake, USS Constellation, USS President, USS Congress, and the most famous of the bunch USS Constitution.
Why does it say 46 seconds ago but a comment was made a week ago I'm tripping balls right now
