The way I heard it told, you push a finger through the paper, swipe yourself clean with a finger, and use the paper to clean your finger. (/shrug) I brought a roll of the good stuff in a Ziploc freezer bag.
To whoever wrote this episode, thank you. That was a fun and hilarious trip down memory lane. I'm not old enough to have eaten C-rats, but we did get the T-rats (or tray rations) back in the late 80's. They were a serious bear to try and open with a P38, but I wish I still had my P38.
UK & Australia / NZ military still issue a FRED - Field Ration Eating Device - this is like you P38 / P51 can opener but with a small spoon incorporated into the design. The best spoons issued are now included with a full size handle & large scoop to eat more - faster.
When I was in the army I was a tank and track driver. My team would always have hot meals because I allowed it to put the mres' in the engine compartment of the tank or track as long as it was wrapped in some sort of cloth so the plastic wouldn't melt from the engine heat. Good times, good times. 🙂
Just to clarify gents & no disrespect intended either by the way for giving lesson in the comments section but for the TP you take the TP out of the pack unfold it & wrap it around your index & middle finger about half way up while pinching it down with your thumb.... & Using light pressure in a swiping motion ...use your imagination lol. Ps the packs are small you'll need several to finish the job it's about the length of your index finger / two thumbs wide & a thumb thick lol it's not great, but with practice you'll have clean fingers at the end. As for the P38 P51 they are fantastic. Thank you simple history keep the content coming.
The P38 Can Opener and the bigger P51 Can Opener sounds really awesome, I really need to know where I can find some. Not to mention, the Flameless Ration Heater sounds hella awesome, perfect for anyone who's doing survival
Yeah... most of the stuff with John Wayne's name is named that way as an insult. Believe it or not, John Wayne is actually a dirty word in the Military.

That "gum" is an IED. You're supposed to chew each piece separately and then mash them together, rub it around like epoxy, shape it in place, put in your blasting cap and run out the wire. Just like a claymore but smaller
3:06 xylitol gum is known to induce laxative effects in some people and at higher dosages perhaps some soldiers are more sensitive to its effects and it really does give them a loose bowel

It wasn't LEARNED how cancerous cigarettes are in the 70s, it's been known for way longer than that. Tobacco industry finally was unable to contain it any longer, and with lucrative defense contracts, kind of can't blame them
