    I’ve sang and played it for years on stage but was playing cowboy chords not swing chords. I got it now. Thanks!!!

    This is the most clear lesson on playing Western swing that I’ve found. So far I’ve spent about four hours working through it. I’ve watched sections of the video enough times that I’m starting to understand what he’s Doing. I’m able to play it straight well enough to bring to my weekend jam for the group to start working on. I’d love to take private Western swing lessons from Whit.

    Tks whit. A very informative lesson. It's wonderful that you share your knowledge. Swing in many forms is many peoples favorite music.

    Pretty slick!! Don’t know if my old fingers can hit all those chords. Arthritis is hard on us old guitar pickers😢😢

    Your swing guitar lessons are among the very best to be found anywhere. That's because you teach from the correct fundamental point---- these moving chord formations sound best when you're singing along, or backing an instrumental melody/improv. It's all about rhythm, and driving a tune in an interesting, musically harmonious way. That's why Hot Club of Cowtown is such a great band, because you people really know how to do it right.

    Thank you, thank you , thank you a thousand times. I remember seeing you and Hot Club of Cow Town at Russ Gordon's place in Los Alamos, NM and was always blown away by the whole sound. I was but a drummer then but have evolved into a guitarist and am always hungry for lessons like this. Hope to cross paths with you again soon, Whit.

    Holy cow . . . if even half the things on UA-cam were as clear and well-explained as this, there would be a lot less confusion in the world.

    Awesome. Thanks. I play trad/hot jazz but this works great for that's type too. And swing in general. I'm thinking about maybe branching out into western swing.

    Damn, when I play that 7th chord with the flat 7 in the base my pinky flies up. Only chord that happens on. No matter what I do or how slow I go to break the habit it still happens at tempo. Drives me crazy!

      Yes your anatomy, size of hand, fingers & age factors will always get in the way. Transpose & find that cord in another form/octave etc. Several publications are available showing all cords spanning 12 frets. I have similar problems with jazz/swing . Very frustrating. Hand & finger stretching & exercises help me. Wishing you all the best!👍

  • @jasondukebaird

    This type of rhythm playing is by far the hardest thing I've tried to learn on guitar. I thought I was getting pretty good at playing lead guitar, learning all the scales, and where all the notes are, and now I feel like a beginner all over again.

  • @jamesmartak

    Hi Whit, great playing! Doesn't the melody of this tune start on the #5 of the E7 chord? So wouldn't putting a B in the bass of the chord conflict with the melody of the tune?

    • @stringdevil
      @stringdevil  3 роки тому +1

      Hi James. I guess you are right but it sounds good to my ear anyway. Maybe because there is a 3 octave gap between the bass line and melody the dissonance works. But maybe I need to try a new chord!😝. I do play augmented (#5) notes freely during solo’s and improvised chord runs so maybe its just a matter of taste. Thank you for watching the video though. 🙏🙏

    • @jamesmartak
      @jamesmartak 3 роки тому

      No worries, it’s all a matter of taste. I agree with you that it doesn’t sound bad. I literally just learned this tune a week ago and have been listening to different versions. Some people play E7#5 but most just play good ol’ E7.
      Either way, love your videos and your playing. I always learn a thing or two from them! Thanks for taking the time to put them out there.
