I smudged everyday at an Indigenous Entrepreneur workshop and I felt so much better for the rest of the day. I tend to get a lot of headaches and I never had a headache for those 4 days - I can't believe how much it helped me
@@caitlincourt948 That is amazing that it helped you not have headaches! I am sure it was great to not have to use other medicines to take the pain away (assuming you take some type of med when having headaches!)
I have been using sage for a few years now now to clear my home and my self of energy not helpful to my journey. I have been picking sweetgrass with my Native Elder for 3 years now and she has taught me how to harvest and braid it. I love to gift people with it. As a Metaphysical Minister I have used cedar to surround a wedding party. I offer tobacco to the Creator in gratitude for the life I have and all its blessings. Miigwech
Rev. Jessie Brandon also used sage to smudge all of our guest at our wedding. We will be forever grateful for this as it initiated opportunities for some of our guest to learn more about my culture.
I burn sage to clear energy within myself and home. Mornings are when my mind and body are ready to be open to creator and my intentions for my day. I honor Sage as a sacred plant that helps to support my wellness so I can be a healthy centered support to my family and friend.
Thanks for sharing how you use sage to support your wellness and start your day with positive intentions. It's great to hear how you honor sage as a sacred plant. 🧡
Thank you for this. In my area, we also use cedar in tea, mixed with other medicines, to reduce inflammation in the body. I learned something new about sweet grass - thanks 🖤🧡
When I was learning about the Medicine Wheel from the Cowlitz Tribe. The first experience was with Sage. I was confused I thought it was cannabis. I told them I can't indulge I work construction and we have drug tests. What a dumb thing to say but that's what I was thinking. They were very king and explained what it was and what it was for. After that they were so kind that they explained in advance. We also used Sweet grass in the Sweat Lodge. Beautiful connected Spirituality!
Coming from a European background (Germanic & Slavic), Europeans have made use of sweetgrass in church functions like saints feast days and as flavoring in tea, candy, tobacco, vodka, soft drinks & perfume.
I was invited to a circle to smudge and pray. It was my first experience and I still feel the peace and love of that sacred moment. I am from France and a Christian but I don't feel stranger to my Cree friends. I worked with that group to help youth get strong against addiction and it is a long project I am very proud of. I was offered sage by one of my new Cree friends and I am looking for a group in my area(Central Alberta) to keep receiving this Peace in a prayer circle and smudge. I am considering smudging in my own home as I believe in the principles presented to me by the group whom I call , in my heart, my sons and daughters from Bonnyville. I believe this would not be disrespectful but I would like to have your advice on this. I cannot accept the idea of offending my and their elders. thanks

Now I will use tobacco to offer thanks and communicate with spirit. Thank you for the video. I never used to pray because I thought it didn’t work but it’s just that I didn’t know how to pray. They have had the answers all along and the knowledge of how to pray and the importance of offerings and doing our 50%
Sage is definitely my favorite sacred medicine. Whenever it's used it relaxes me. On another note, Tobacco was used(as is tradition) in my brother and I's naming ceremony. Afterwords our Great-Grandmother named us. My name is Mkete'Mko(Black Bear) and my brother's name is Kakkéswe(not sure if this is the correct spelling, as kakké means 'forever' and swe means 'going' but I've never seen swe spelled out, so I'm not sure if that's necessarily correct)
Thank you for this content! I am unfortunately part of a project that will be affecting a very special site. I would like to give our tribal leader a gift that symbolizes my intent to honor the significance of the space.
I grew up in California, and I remember witnessing a Native American outdoor show/dance/ritual. Not sure what it was exactly but one thing that’s never left me was the scent of something they were burning. I just recently learned that it was sage that they were burning and it’s something I want to start doing. I also enjoy a good cigar because of the aromatic qualities of the tobacco and the taste/flavor that it has. I was wondering, can one smudge with sage while smoking a cigar or are there any rules when it comes to these sacred medicines?
i've an interest in restoring my yard to a native plant habitat. i also wish to create a medicine garden with these four sacred plants. here is where i'm stumped. i have not found these medicines endemic to any single area, which begs the question of when were the traditional uses developed. post colonial or, pre-contact through long trade routes? i'll be seeking input from my local pomo/miwok friend to see if she can shed some light on local medicines as well.
Hi Olga, everyone has their own personal preference when it comes to Smudging. Some people like to have a Smudge prayer prepared for their Smudge, but it is not required. Whatever you are most comfortable with. I have attached a video we made about Smudge Prayers if you would like to learn more about them :) ua-cam.com/video/z_L0eI2kSC8/v-deo.html
The shells have been around for years and been used in ceremony, jewelry making and used for regalia also. Shells are from the water and water As Indigenous peoples, we recognize the sacredness of our water, the interconnectedness of all life and the importance of protecting our water from pollution, drought and waste. Water is the giver of all life and without clean water all life will perish there for making that shell the perfect vessel for our prayers.
Thank you for noticing that! We believe it to be N - Cedar, E - Tobacco, W - sweetgrass and S - sage, and we are sorry to confuse you! Indigenous culture is vast and has many different teachings and depending on who you may speak with, they might change in directions!
it fascinates me how people of western european ancestry appropriated tobacco first and have really destroyed their health with it. Too much eastern / fire energy! Now we have depleted the white sage - trying to balance using the west and water energy, but again modern culture has overdone it. Personally, I am guilty of this as well having smoked cigarettes and pipe tobacco and also having done some foolish things with various types of sage including white sage before I heard it was becoming endangered. Curently I am bonding with Thuja plicata and using it as medicine. Now I want to learn more about Sweetgrass!
