Boy the first week everybody was running for cover... One month down the road I just love it. I live in a town called Dahab, South Sinai, Red Sea Egypt. Goliath probably thought he would get shaken and miss, reason he took his helmet off was more than likely pride. I would find it unlikely that Goliath didn't know what this weapon of war could do.

Rome used slingers as part of the auxiliary in their legions they would cast lead bullets to use. and also used staff slings (i used 1 before alot of fun). they were very lightly armed and had no armor. but they were very effective.
The only thing I managed to hit with a sling was the windscreen on my own van when the shot went behind me , about 30 years ago , never tried it again 🤣🤣🤣
Refreshing my memory on the sheperd sling, going to make myself and my son one. I always preferred the helicopter method also but liked practicing other throwing styles to at least be familiar with the feel. For a person who becomes proficient with the sheperds sling it is a deadly weapon that cost nothing to make or is inexpensive to buy, its lightweight and ammunition can be gathered as a guy hikes. I made a couple of slings a few months ago and gave one a try out behind the auto shop at work and I found myself kinda stuck when I was spinning it over my head, LOL I was afraid to let it go because I wasn’t sure it would go where I wanted it to. Lots of open field in front of me but the shop and a tractor were behind me and to the right. I need to find a place where there’s nothing to worry about. Thanks for the video.
If you're buying shepherd slings, you should be making them aswell. It's cheap and easy to do. Parachord is 5 dollars for 200 feet. You can make upward of a dozen of them with 1 roll of 550. I've made a few, and they work fantastic. Keep it simple and learn how to be fully self-sufficient with your weapon.

The action is just like pitching a baseball. You should make your own sling. Cheap and easy with just about any available material. My first pouch, fifty years ago was made from a piece of inner tube, no one else at that time knew how to do it.
Agreed, the history is fascinating stuff. Example a lead Roman sling stone was found in the UK. Think a small lead chicken egg in shape and size. The soldier who used it and presumably made it scratched into the surface "A sugarplum for you!" Essentially "A gift! But you won't like it", grim soldiers humor. A staff sling is easier to use because you rely on the cord slipping off of the end instead of timing your release of the cord. They can also toss heavier ammo because you're effectively adding four feet of arm via the stick. I'd hazard a guess that they are less accurate because you lack control of the release. Still, I'm surprised there's no record of them in warfare. You could get a few hundred people throwing in the right direction with an afternoon of practice. With the ability to throw fist sized rocks in volleys and the practically free nature of it, you'd think they would have seen more use.

They come from a small island in the Mediterranean, off the Spanish coast if I remember correctly and practice it to this day. You can find competitions on UA-cam. The story goes that the islanders were literally naked herders when the Romans first landed on their island. They wove their slings from tall grass found all over the island and could field impressive numbers when under attack. The Romans realized pretty quickly that they would rather have them as allies than enemies.
I believe that any biconical piece of stone, ceramic or heavy metal can achieve the gargantuan distance of 550 meters. Sling ammo doesn't necessarily have to be made of tungsten carbide, depleted uranium or lead to achieve firing range comparable to a bow.
The Chamorro tribe in Guam were so adept that Portuguese settlers with guns were shaking in their boots. Biconical pieces of coral and fired clay are nothing to laugh about.
If you want to be impressed with your sling use lead barrel sinkers for ammo. We had a range finder and kept working around the shoreline on a lake. We were getting out to 200 yards Seriously!
The longer the sling the worse for your opponent. There is a video on youtube where dude breaks the sound speed barrier with a sling like this. I would not wanna charge agains baleric slingers as a roman infantryman

A lefty in another video is a very good slinger. Out of all the techniques he used, Greek and Byzantine are my favorite throws.

I made a shepherd sling, but I can throw the ammo just as far, if not further with my arm.
Number one - consistant size and weight of ammo.
