I once worked in here in stores for a summer break as a student in the 80s. A good friend was a psychiatric nurse here. It was closed in 1999. Asylums were closed because it was felt that the patients should live in the community. Over the years I have met quite a few people on drugs. mental disorders and the like. Not that they are violent, but I would not class them as 'lunies' as the once term was used. However such people are incapable of looking after themselves. not to mention quite unemployable, going from place to place, being evicted. At Fairfield, they had a bedroom which they could call their own, had regular meals, activities and the support of a psychiatric team. Asylums were looked down upon, but at least such people were cared for. I felt the mass closure of asylums was more of a cost saving rather than a benefit to such people who need care. I have met too many mentally disadvantaged people whose lives are just a complete mess, and struggling to even live.

Some people cope better when there is solid structure day to day. As a social worker, I have seen some people who have been granted their own house with 24 hour staff. They’re Expected to learn a normal way of living and just can’t cope. It’s not a realistic for them. The local authorities heart is in the right place but sense goes out the window at times.
