I’m surprised the vet didn’t give her an allergy test. My dog is allergic poultry and while he doesn’t get acne, he scratches if he eats eggs or chicken.

You did a great job. I think it's the bowls. I used plastic and my cat developed acne. I went to a thrift shop and found beautiful little crystal and china bowls that my cat used for the rest of her life. The acne cleared up very quickly after switching from plastic.
    Thanks for the video.

copper bowls are also apparently very good because copper has naturally antiseptic qualities.
if you can't afford those, regularly sanitizing stainless steel is good, too.
definitely don't use plastic bowls, though. they're the worst for retaining bacteria.
switching from plastic to stainless steal made a huge difference for my cat's acne.

@Heather Novakouski I think I've also heard that about plastic. Petsmart has clearance items. I got the cutest porcelain food/water bowl for $2. Had it for about 2 years--has done fine in the dishwasher, even the non-skid silicone ring stays on.

Same for my doggo - she got acne after using plastic bowls for years so we switched to stainless steel
Unfortunately she's gotten very old, arthritic, and has some tooth problems and all those factors have made the metal bowls difficult to eat from so we had to go back to plastic :(
Never thought to use ceramic, gonna have to do some looking around and see if we can get some

I dealt with a very similar cat acne problem. We had always used stainless steel bowls.. We tried the wipes you tried, didn't work. I tried an acne face wash didn't work. Finally after another phone call with my vet to followup on previous appt, she suggested virbac epiotic advanced, it is an Ear cleaner, it has been the only thing to get it mostly under control. He still gets a few blackheads right by his mouth but not like he used to. So instead of 3 times a day we are down to daily or every other. Just wanted to let you know your not alone. Thank you for doing this video and showing me I'm not the only one fight this. We have had tons of cats over the years, and this is the only one I've ever seen this problem with, and I was at my wits end and starting to second guess myself, but the part of the video where the flea brush was getting stuck that day that was what I was fighting.

I had the same problem with my cat that I have now. Turned out she was allergic to shellfish is soon as I stop feeding her the fish the acne went away. Food allergies can be the culprit. Also, you should never pick out the scabs like that. It just causes a potential for infection.

My cat had the same problems. Changing bowls from plastic ones to ceramics and using skin antiseptic helped. Vet also said that cats can be allergic to chiken, maybe that's why your cat's acne got worse one day?

  • @SilverScaleMA
    @SilverScaleMA Рік тому +59

I have one cat that will get acne if she eats foods with either chicken or beef but is fine with fish and turkey. Also, every cat we have had will get acne in we use plastic or metal bowls. The only exception is the really good food grade stainless steel bowl I got for my cat's water (because it is insulated). So we only use ceramic or glass bowls. Sensitivities in cats is such a pain to pinpoint, something that might cause a reaction in one cat probably won't be exactly the same thing that is causing a reaction in another cat so if you have multiple it can be hard to figure out what is specifically causing the reactions for each individual cat.

Have a little tan kitty that gets these too, and we too used to gently scrape them off. Then a vet told up they were caused by an allergy to plastic and were common on the chin area as the hair is not as full. She was getting this from her food and water bowl when her chin touched the plastic as she ate and drank. We switched her to a metal bowl and nary a spot again.

For anyone reading this with similar problems my orange boy had insane acne. It would be a big black layer that I had to soften and peel off. I tried everything/ Special shampoos, different foods (since he is allergic to most food), cleaning everything he uses and nothing helped. In the end after months of pain what worked was that I changed from stainless steel bowl to a ceramic plate, and I cleaned his chin with 3% hydrogen monoxide. And now and then in the summer he may get a few acne but that clears up with 3% hydrogen and life is a lot easyer now, poor boy was screaming from pain because the topical medicine I used had a little alcohol in it (it is safe i don't do anything without the vet)

My cat had simailar issues, her chin and throat area was so raw from the acne getting infected. Turns out it started with a food allergy. So by elimination we discovered fish flavored foods and foods with colours was making her sick. I had two different vets tell me that it was their experience that it all starts with the food. So I only get chicken or beef, and none of those multi-coloured mixes. I hope this info will help someone else.

I have a naked dog that has been dealing with severe acne for the past 6-8 years. Mostly environmental. But some are reactions to dry skin. So I have to keep her shaved down all the time, cleaned up and moisturized to keep her from getting that way again. It was odd the way I figured it out, and how quickly it cleared, too. In a matter of 3-4 days, she was happier and I was! I didn't realize that cats could get it too!

I have ceramic bowls and my cat stills gets acne every once in awhile, you just have to clean the bowl either every week or every other week. I also volunteer at a shelter and some cats are more prone to getting it than others because they are more oily so I’ll make notes to keep watch of them and clean their bowls. Multiple factors are definitely the cause for what I call catne.

When I touched it he flinched back a bit but then rubbed his chin on my knuckles, something he didn't do before, so I rubbed with my knuckle in a circle and out plopped this little clump of dirt. I held it in front of him and he inspected it by sniffing and then made a face.

Sorry that your cat has cat acne. My cat had the same thing, it started as cat acne & then just got worse and worse…she ended up having IBD. Spent a lot of time and money to try to fix things, but in the end at almost 6 years of age we had to put her to sleep. She had gotten so Ill from the IBD that most likely turned into lymphoma…This was recent just last month. But just keep close eye on it. We tried new bowls just like the ones you bought.. that did help but didn’t clear it up. We bought air purifiers and washed everything, tried Novel diets, went to countless animal dermatologists, we even had an internal medicine vet for her..we had her on antibiotics and steroids and creams… etc…she had good days and bad days….sorry I didn’t want to bum you out, but just wanted to share with you.

My kitty was allergic to ly last cat's favourite bowl. It was plastic. The vet told us to switch bowls and also applied some medication to her problem zones and two weeks later she was completely fine, no traces of anything
She had something similar to blisters even but ceramic and metal bowls are now hers. And her drinking bowl is just a glass that used to be my mom's glass because our cat really likes drinking put of it :)

My one girl had acne so bad her whole jaw was swollen huge and it got super infected and it bursted and it was really nasty. We thought it was our wet food bowls but it actually turned out that we weren't cleaning the dry food bowl enough. I got some medicated pads which helped but warm water on cotton balls worked the best. A couple times I was able to pull the blackheads clean out with sterilized hands of course and they were huge like a little rices

This video was just on my UA-cam homepage. My cat gets acne sometimes. Probably like 5x since we have him. We have him 2 years, 1 month, and 1 day, lol. I switched from plastic to steel for food and ceramic for water. I heard no plastic and steel is fine. He has a dry and wet food automatic feeder, so they don't come in ceramic. I don't think. But I heard only plastic was bad. Vet told us no plastic, and the acne can be from stress because nothing has changed with his food or anything to have caused it. Or it can be seasonal. He usually gets it when there's a change in the house, and cats hate changes or change of routine, so we believe it's stress. We took him to the vet twice. I use witch hazel and that helps. They said I can use the vetericyrn that I got on Amazon the first time we took him. It's smaller and more money than with hazel, so I switched to that after taking him the 2nd time, which the vet said wipes are good too, but the wipes, I feel didn't help. I like your video and the progress. I'm glad she's ok

What is the brand name of the medicated wipes that the vet recommended for you to use? Please provide a link. Since your cat's acne suddenly got worse, i would suspect an allergy to eggs or chicken, so don't feed those foods to your cat. It's important to wash your pet's water bowls daily, and to never use plastic bowls.

I think I’m this cat, it is probably good allergy. 1. It’s near mouth 2. It’s not because of dirt because your home looks very clean and she dosent go outside to get dirty 3. Food allergy is often the cause of acne in adults and pets. You are a great owner. I wanted to tell you that instead of a cone, to prevent scratching you can get a stuffed cloth donut that is more comfortable to prevent her from scratching the face.
