  • There are many types of orb-weaver spiders based on their species. But the one in the video is a derby spider that belong to a so called species Neoscona Punctigera, one of the most common species caught for spider derbies in the Philippines.

    I caught a bunch of orb weavers at work that were clearly getting to the end of the lives at the tail end of summer, and put them in a larger container with steel mesh which used to belong to a tarantula that grew out of it. They mated and one sac was laid but it disappeared and assumed it was eating. The male adults vanished and assumed they were eaten. The last of the females that I didn't release died unfortunately, and I looked in the container 3 weeks later and saw a sac I had no clue was there.. I pulled it out, and opened it a bit, and a couple of them ran out and jumped and disappeared and I felt bad. I have had the sac on my desk for a month and the little boogers are staying in there. When I open it a bit they start to come out and then I fold the sac back over and they decide to go back inside. They have had nothing to eat for 3 months now, but I do mist the sac. Also, if these are anything like jumping spiders, there is the equivalent of "mama's milk" to keep them nourished in the meantime. I was going to let them go outside, but its getting to winter now and I would prefer to put them back in the old tarantula container with steel mesh top, and have some questions.
    1. should I put any substrate at the bottom of the container?
    2. Will fruit flies suffice? I am guessing the cute little boogers will build webs. We have our own culture and have tiny fruit flies we can use. Any other very tiny insects we can find and use?
    3. Instead of releasing them as winter gets close, I would like to raise them in our container as much as possible. Is this doable? I heard that its not easy to keep orb weavers captive and I would like to grown them and then release in Spring if possible. We have raised tons of baby jumpers and trying to breed tarantulas too though I haven't had the best luck with that sadly.
    4. Anything else you can recommend? I am going to open the sac tomorrow and let them loose into the mentioned container, and I will leave the original mamas eggsac in there with them as well.
    I am guessing there are probably anywhere from 20-40 of them. There were ones that hatched, and white dots which I thought were bad eggs, but a lot of those eggs may have ended up hatching later as well. There are probably 20 white eggs or so left and I assume those aren't good eggs.. When I hold the sac up at the light and stretch is a tad, I can see the little brown abdomens with legs that are fluttering around. I am so surprised they have not all abandoned the sac and left at this point - is this even normal?
    I would love to learn how to do this better so each year I can end up with several sacs if possible and end up letting them loose in our garden with our plants on the landing right outside our apartment door, and would love for them to build webs out there to thrive over the spring and summer and catch the tons of bugs flying around here. When it gets to over 100 degrees during the summer, I would be out there once a day misting their webs lightly to make sure they are hydrated properly and hopefully keep them there. They are such peaceful spiders and are VERY gentle as well, and its such a shame that people freak out when they walk into their webs and end up killing the poor things without realizing the extreme importance of these magnificent creatures that are vital for the human food supply, and if it were not for them, our food supply would be FAR less every year and prices would be a lot higher with potential shortages!
    Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide, and sorry for the long message!

      You may put some dried leaves and small twigs inside the container. And feed them small insects. If they are too crowded in the container it end up eating each other.

    So I have Orb Weaving Spiders at my home and wanted to help spur their population in the area. 👉I'm a little concerned how to collect an egg sac without damaging it. They are incredibly sticky.
    👉How do you keep them over the winter months
    👉I ain't touching them things with my hands 😅

    • @creeptonictv
      @creeptonictv  Рік тому +1

      You can use a small stick to get the eggsac and transfer to your spider enclousre. But using a hand is fine. Just be careful not to damage the tiny eggs. And during winter, put some twigs with dried leaves on it inside their enclosure.

    If also possible can i just let them eat the other spiderlings?
    Its cruel but one egg sack contains quite alot for me, i wanna reduce them to more or less than 15, since it takes them 1 month to finally show a "nice" growth when you can actually see there color and species/type, simply killing flies with slippers is gonna take a long time.
