His hair rocks ESPECIALLY by today's standards! Bought TALK TALK TALK when i was 14, and played it to death...one of the handfull of lp's from the 80s I still listen to.
He had some of my favorite lyrics from the 80’s, as did Gary Numan. They exuded mystery with simple language and clear but nuanced images. Richard’s voice too was smart, tough, pointed and unforgettable.
I worshipped Rich Butler since I got my very first LP - TALK TALK TALK in the mid-80s. Saw The Furs LIVE at Glassboro State College, now Rowan University when I was 14. My friend, Suzanne Hamilton & I waited to meet him backstage..THANKS to my friend and her confidence to ASK, I gotta quick kiss&autograph from Richard! Thank You SUZANNE! And THANK YOU Rich for giving the teenage Me The experience of a lifetime! Still a Huge fan. Anytime the FURS come to the East Coast, I’m there. And I got my braces off. 😁
if you had never heard their music,it would be very hard to appreciate how great they were, just listening to the music the put in the intro--tho i love that song and so many others! i always wanted to see a interview with richard! thanks for posting this!
Love you, Richard. I'm seeing the Furs when they come to my town next month! Hey, that interviewer is the anchor who yelled "The fuck are you doing?!" on live TV and embarrassed the shit out of herself. Haha! :) You can find it here on UA-cam.
Geez, where the hell did this interviewer come from? Very stupid line of questions and, backward analogies towards the 60's, bla..bla..bla. Mr. Butler did well with this interview.
Poor Richard. He looks like somebody just woke him up and dragged him in to do a horrid 5 minute interview of ridiculous questions. What he must have been thinking while he was sitting there listening to this rubbish.
This interviewer also interviewed Cyndi Lauper around 1984, and she seemed to have offended Cyndi Lauper a bit as well. It seems this interviewer is just straight forward and doesn't mean to offend them.
A bit of David (had David been a sixty year old woman who had smoked for fifty-five of those years), a bit of Johnny Lydon, a dash of Peter O'Toole, and plenty of no one ever heard before. Truly a distinctive - and still terrific - presence.
Funny to hear people comparing Butler/Furs with Bowie. I liked some Bowie records, got about seven albums... but I got everything the Psychedelic Furs put out. Never pay Bowie but it's always a pleasure to hear the Furs - Bowie's voice grates on me in a way Butlers never does.
To compare the two? Bowie was groundbreaking and a musical genius in his day.If you wanted to say his voice is often over stylized , I wouldn't argue , but it could work well in some contexts. Butler likely wouldn't EXIST without Bowie, and a few other bands that came before, like the Velvet Underground; I've seen him as a fairly solid lyricist that gave into commercial pressure early in the bands career. The industry was much different then, and you were either on board with the PopRadio Friendly, or not; and MTV had just been added to the fray. There was no viable Indie or Alt market that was going to support you.Even what are now hugely important acts, like the Pixies, struggled. I followed them from inception, liked the first two rather rough LP's, and abandoned them entirely after the third.Utterly embarassing. IMO, Bowie's last great effort was Scary Monsters,- he got many more licks in before becoming irrelevant.
Wow... terrible questions. I cringed most of the interview. First time seeing RB do an interview. For some reason I thought he'd be posh like David Coverdale with a slight arrogance. I was totally wrong. He seems shy and sensitive. Almost on the spectrum.
She's trying. We should cut her some slack, she HAS to pose stupid television questions, and simply isn't hep to the hipster music of the time. She mightta been great with someone of a decade earlier.
Whoa - what a poor interview - esp. with the robotic and scripted questions. But don't blame the interviewer for the cynical and derogatory tones....blame the mainstream media/industrial establishment which tries to over categorize, over explain and uber-monetize everything....otherwise - if the music is not "safe" it gets demonized and mashed all together and tossed out, with self-assuring lines such as "punk thing" and "punk rock died an unlamented death" or "you look a little sinister up there." Thankfully great music - such as The Furs and Richard Butler - will outlive any media's faux attempts at writing and owning history.

the eponymous album is still their best

I have a lot of respect for richard, he's such a composed and professional guy and I think that's very admirable
if you had never heard their music,it would be very hard to appreciate how great they were, just listening to the music the put in the intro--tho i love that song and so many others!
i always wanted to see a interview with richard! thanks for posting this!
He's one elegant cat.
worst and best video on the tube! love the cigarette drag at the beginning of this very amateur video and interview...love the furs..

he looks a bit like early john lydon in this clip....great band...i still listen to talk talk talk alot.
vinto34 A hell of A lot better looking than Lydon or Bowie.
If I was in a room with Richard Butler, there wouldn't have been much talking going on. But I can assure you, my mouth would have been used. A lot.
MorbidBliss22 Agreed
.. a chain smoker?
Peter O'Toole, to me. All three are smooth, gentlemanly Brits. (Let's throw Robert Palmer into that club.)
He's what you'd get if you mixed the DNA from O'toole, Dylan, Bowie and Johnny Rotten.
Very respectable that they didn't know how to really play the instruments but wanted to make music anyways. Beautiful chaos is a great way to put it.
There going to be here in a week and I don't think I can go. Sigh. One day I have to see them live.
Geez, where the hell did this interviewer come from? Very stupid line of questions and, backward analogies towards the 60's, bla..bla..bla. Mr. Butler did well with this interview.
Always was a happy bunny, old Richard.
Poor Richard. He looks like somebody just woke him up and dragged him in to do a horrid 5 minute interview of ridiculous questions. What he must have been thinking while he was sitting there listening to this rubbish.
Just doing his job
Sue Simmons gave me so many laughs with her interviews in the 1980's and '90s. She could be so inappropriate.
This interviewer also interviewed Cyndi Lauper around 1984, and she seemed to have offended Cyndi Lauper a bit as well. It seems this interviewer is just straight forward and doesn't mean to offend them.
There is nothing mean in their music. I think the lady needed a vacation and leave the interviews to the professionals.
Doesn't butler really Look a like to Bowie
He smokes,Cute,Wears the same suit,Voice? But Richard is taller than bowie
A bit of David (had David been a sixty year old woman who had smoked for fifty-five of those years), a bit of Johnny Lydon, a dash of Peter O'Toole, and plenty of no one ever heard before. Truly a distinctive - and still terrific - presence.
I always thought so~
Sister Europe.

Headphone warning :D
She seems like she came from 1975 and Butler came from 2021.
why did he have to gel his hair he was so cute
First there was Richard Butler, then he got used to the media, now we have Daniel Blumberg. :)
Which furs song is played at the beginning of this interview?
Sister Europe.
This chick is so out of her element. I sense some #metoo here. But I must ask, "What prompted Richard to go on a show called 'Live at Five'?" Hahaha.
Wow... terrible questions. I cringed most of the interview. First time seeing RB do an interview. For some reason I thought he'd be posh like David Coverdale with a slight arrogance. I was totally wrong. He seems shy and sensitive. Almost on the spectrum.
Don't you think the furs are like PIL,if you look at the book of the best bands in the 21st century they come side by side, lvcx
This lady. I think I've found the female alter ego to Tom Snyder. Butler was easy on her.
She is very passive aggressive and not particularly well suited for this kind of interview.
anyone else think he kinda looks like david bowie?
She is gorgeous but totally out of touch and unhip.
She's trying. We should cut her some slack, she HAS to pose stupid television questions, and simply isn't hep to the hipster music of the time. She mightta been great with someone of a decade earlier.
That woman is obnoxious.

What a horrible interviewer.
