Lata Mangeshkar, nicknamed 'The Nightingale of India' for her beautiful melodious voice, was 92 years old when she passed away. Beginning her singing career from 1942, she sang over 30000 songs in 36 different languages including some foreign languages spanning over a period of around 75 years. Apart from several awards and honours, she was the recepient of India's highest civilian honour 'Bharat Ratna', being the second vocalist and the first playback singer in the country to receive the the honour. France had also conferred its highest civilian honour upon her. Certainly amongst the most iconic personalities in India.
'MAINE PYAR KIYA' is a film that lives on in my heart. I was 9 years old when this film ('MPK') came out - I'm giving away my age now 😆 - and I'll never forget the first time I watched 'MPK', or the hundreds of times, I watched it thereafter. I would enact all the scenes and songs from the film, and I wanted to be 'Suman'. I fell in love with Bhagyashree who played 'Suman', and I would repeatedly watch the film, just for her.
I appreciated Salman Khan more back then than I do now. He was just gorgeous in 'MPK', and he gave a great performance in the film. But Bhagyashree stole the show for me, and she was brilliantly cast opposite Salman, and they made a great pair onscreen.
This film made a huge impact on me growing up, and the idea of this innocent blossoming love between two people really stayed with me. The songs were a major hit in my house, and would literally play all day long - if I had the cassette player that was, I think my family wanted to throw me out of the house at one point, because that is all I would listen to, and so many tapes had to be replaced!
Listening to this song today - 'DIL DEEWANA' - in Lata Mangeshkar's voice was so emotional for me. Since Lata Mangeshkar passed away on 06.02.22, I haven't been able to hear her singing voice, because it's so emotional, and I guess in some strange way, I'm grieving for her. It's difficult to imagine that she is not amongst us, but I know she has gone to a far beautiful place, and her artistry, and voice will live on until the end of time.

I was born 6 years after this came out and watched it on a VHS tape around the early 2000s, I'm not 100% sure for some reason but yes this is a timeless classic for sure and I honestly shipped the two main leads so much 😭🤣

This film came out just as I was entering my teenage years..I watched bits of it pretty much every day for a year! Of course, the young Salman was my first real celebrity crush! The music was lovely. There's another great song from the same film called 'Kahe Toh Se Sajna' - sung by Sharda Sinha. Definitely worth checking out. Very rustic tones. Beautiful! Needless to say, the last few days have been spent listening to Lata, not that ever a day went by without her song playing in the house before.

Classic movie watched it first time around the early 90s it come on bbc around 1990 and my uncle recorded the movie. Also the movie was the biggest hit of 1989 in Bollywood.
