  • Beauty is about more than the body you inhabit -- it's a way of being that goes beyond genetics or societal ideals. Aboriginal writer and former model Sasha Sarago invites you to decolonize beauty, moving away from the monolithic Eurocentric archetype and towards a more essential, authentic understanding of self that belongs to everyone.

There will always be plenty of people who find even Ms Universe ugly but that’s their personal opinion. If people don’t see our beauty, that’s not the end of the world - we are still of great value.
Nobody can stop us from owning our own beauty as her grandmother proved.
It’s important for her to believe in the power and beauty of her people. Why wait for others’ acceptance and validation?
We must raise our daughters to feel proud of much more than just their appearances and value the innumerable other admirable qualities in themselves and others and find happiness in worthy pursuits. Teach them not to care about those who cannot see beyond appearances

Given how drowned we are in the hypnosis of the day leaves no room to delve into this precious understanding. It’s through living action such as yours that stirs people up as they encounter the strong, powerful you. Beautifully expressed.

in my educated OPINION; the separations within humanity further us from understanding an important idea that she discusses. the idea that "beauty" is simply aesthetic, rather than an appreciation of the spiritual and intellectual complexity that we KNOW humans are comprised. separations of identity and cultures, i believe leads us further from accepting and understanding that which we KNOW is true about our own species. as a person of the 21st century, we have a choice, to acknowledge the complexity of our species, and to alter historical definitions due to the simple fact that we KNOW more than we did.
I could share my ideas about this for days, and can only hope that stubbornness, ego, and denial don't continue to slow, what i believe is a natural progression of the knowledge and understanding of who we, as a species, are, and what we could become.
    thank you Sasha !!

While I appreciate the intention for inclusivity, words have meaning. We have words for all the laudable traits that the presenter calls "beauty". To call individual qualities like fierceness, leadership, generosity, and the ability to provide "beauty" makes the term beauty meaningless. In order for a word to have meaning, it must be distinct from other words. Speaking from a purely aesthetic perspective, while it is true that global beauty standards have been shaped by European culture, a more empowering message is not that we should redefine beauty to be more accommodating to the physical traits of non-European cultures. The truly empowering message about beauty is that BEAUTY SHOULD NOT MATTER. If women are striving to have parity in this world, and they want to be measured by the power of their minds the strength of their character, THEY must relinquish THEIR fixation with beauty.

I disagree with your second part. Expression of beauty is just as much integral to a positive human experience as is having the right mindset. To suppress or discourage this aspect is to turn your face away from a potentially powerful developmental tool, both individually and collectively. To ignore the aesthetics of physical reality and how they affect society at large, in favour of a rational mindset is being ignorant, ironically. If we do not delineate the boundaries of healthy development and manifestations of beautific expressions of one’s soul, cultural heritage and aesthetic preferences, then the emergence of negative consequences, arising from a lack of education and guidance, is inevitable. Just as the repression of sexuality, and then, the sudden burst of it, without an intermediary of sexual education and exploration had caused problems that could’ve been avoided otherwise, suppressing the drive towards creating beauty through self-expression would actually produce more dull minds and a monotone world, as beauty is a product of one’s subjective realm. It is an affirmation of one’s values, that we can detect on a painting can be traced on the human body, enriching social relations. Yes, I do understand what you implicitly mean by that. And my point is further proven to be correct in conjunction with your complaints that beauty is unnecessarily exalted, but in my opinion, in the wrong direction. People look attractive to gain something, they look attractive on ideas and values that are ephemeral, destructive and ultimately, unfulfilling. Beauty becomes the means towards something, rather than the product of that authentic self. It is a fabrication of an identity.

The presenter is wearing lipstick, she is wearing eye liner, eye shadow, blush, possibly foundation, a bra that lifts her breasts, a dress that accentuates her slender waist ,and white high heels - all fashion conventions that very much express European sensibilities with regards to beauty. None of these fashion decisions are REMOTELY ABORIGINAL. Yet, she is advocating for us to liberate ourselves from Eurocentric standards of beauty!? It's time for people to get past the fantasy that solar and wind are going to provide the energy we demand. They can help, but they will never provide the baseline energy that we demand with current or even near future technology.

At least there were no beauty standards before colonization. At least women were always highly valued as leaders in most cultures throughout history. Why would a European person not use European standards of beauty just as some other group would use theirs. And if those others adopt them because of colonization, then perhaps they've changed their opinion since beauty is just a preference based on culture. So do you live by the standard of ancestors or those of today? And why is one correct and the other not?

Sadly TED Talks continue to devolve into pseudo-religious woke garbage. Where are the topics that really matter, like sustainable energy production? LFTRs be front-and-center every week. It's time for people to get past the fantasy that solar and wind are going to provide the energy we demand. They can help, but they will never provide the baseline energy that we demand with current or even near future technology.
This is not a mystery to engineers, MIT Georgia Tech. We have all done extensive studies for decades and there is no reasonable debate among the informed.
But instead we get this pseudo-religious woke garbage which helps no one and creates division.

How the mighty have fallen. TED's output in recent years has been just plain embarrassing. It's just a desolate landscape in terms of learning and insight. Political pandering, virtue signaling, and the ideas are often as cringeworthy as the ones expressing them. I'm reminded of a library whose shelves have been filled with nothing but bibles. Waste of space, waste of time. A pity.

To paraphrase "stereotypically aboriginal women are seen as ugly" that's a racist idea since it's based on a general notion that’s untrue. Physical attractiveness != Beautiful. Beautiful has many meanings; in English, words can have more than one meaning in context. While it would be nice if everyone found all people attractive, much of attacitivness is tried into lust and reproduction suitability. You can’t just demand other people find you attractive.
