    I am so freaking excited for these new season's costumes. Already there is a huge improvement from season 1, no offense to the costume designer. The fit is better, the historical references are very well represented and specific. There's cohesion between seasons, but more than that, there's cohesion between shows! Rhaenyra's costumes are giving me Daenerys/Cersei b!£ch energy without repeating their styles and I'm LIVING FOR IT!!!! That cap/ cobra sleeves sent me FLYING TO THE MOON. You know what this tells me? It tells me that fashion trickles down through the ages even as it changes, and THAT'S what I wanted. That's why I was annoyed with some of Daemon's costumes in season 1, they were an exact copy of most male costumes in GoT; it didn't rhyme, just repeated. Oh, I can't wait! 😂😂

      I felt a lot of season 7 Daenerys vibes in the trailer. Rhaenys hair was similar to Dany’s hair in season 7. Baela’s outfit had dany’s cape and the exact broach missandei wore. Even more silver jewellery and costume accessories instead of all gold.

    From the teaser alone the costumes and wigs look way better than season 1. It appears they took the audience’s criticism and concerns into account and actually did something about it. I won’t speak too soon but the clothing fits much better and Rhaenyra has so many more options to wear. I was kinda taken back by how much she wore some of the same dresses in season 1. This is now starting to feel like the real book Rhaenyra that had amazing fashion sense.
    Season 1 did a lot of the heavy lifting for set designs, props, CGI dragon models… so maybe they had a little extra budget for wigs and clothes this season?
    Now that Rhaenyra and the blacks are on Dragonstone we are starting to see a lot more of “Daenerys” in their style. Rhaenys hair, Baelas cape and broach, Rhaenyra incorporating more silver into her accessories and outfits. Bring on season 2!

    The ladies’ costumes already look superior this season. I think I may even have seen a hint of correct underpinnings under Alicent’s gown when she’s out in the city!
    And how happy are we that Rhaenys’ hairstyles have been sorted out?!
    I love the idea that the Lannisters usurped the asymmetric style that seems alien to anything else in Westeros from the Targaryens, literally taking the ancestral style of the most powerful family as their own, to show the world that they’re now the first authority in the realms.

      Hi mellow, thank you so much for commenting. That's exactly what I take from it. I was trying to find the quote where Joffrey says something like..."Say what you will about the Targaryens..." when redecorating the throneroom because he admires their style so much. Cersei was originally betrothed to Raeghar.

    Definitely looking forward to your analysis and thoughts as more promo comes out!
    I’m kinda surprised to hear some comparisons to Star Wars but I wonder if it’s the tailoring or the neat layering of the robes on both Rhaenyra and Rhaenys from the trailer that is giving off that vibe? It’s very different from last season where there was barely any layering.
    You pointed out Alicents green velvet gown is similar to the chair she is sitting in - that….definitely makes me think it’s meant to make her look ornamental, like she is a piece in the red keep, meant to be seen as part of the castle itself.
    Can’t wait for more!

    The costumes evolved greatly, and now they are finally beautiful and play a role dividing both teams in style and this give us internal ideas behind the team and their cultural heritage. As Alicent and team green wear a lot of Westerosy clothes, with its fit and silhouette, Rhaenyra and team black wear mostly valyrian inspired fits similar to dragon-keepers and Rhae and Daemon wedding gowns. Can’t wait to see more of both. That’s going to be amazing!

    Re: The Star Wars thing: I think people might be responding less to the cross-body kimono-esque styling, and maybe more the structural aspects of the neckline and lapels? It's weird, the other costumes you mentioned, I don't notice the "jedi" look, but I do kind of see it in the image of Rhaenrya. Something about how the fabric is layered feels like a galaxy far far away but I can't quite put my finger on what causes me to see it!

    Im so excited for season 2! Both the show itself and the new costuming! I commented on a season one video saying that I didnt mind the costumes themselves, and thought most of the issues likely stemmed from the pandemic, with a lack of proper fittings and "on the fly" decisions being made during filming without the costume designer actually being there (which definitely seems to be the case from the behind the scenes content). From what we see in the trailer, even the costumes that are the same as the first season look much better, and I'm incredibly hopeful going forward! I cant wait for further commentary and reviews!

    I love Alicent's aureola's headpiece. Rhaenyra wore a similar one in the first season, when crowned. I read an interview with the costume department in which they said that they were inspired by Byzantine Empire. In both occasions we've seen them -- a coronation and burial -- are formal. So we can imagine that aureolas were at some point fashionable in Westeros, but they have fallen in use and nowadays are only used as formal attire. Great way to convey how fashion evolves and how certain elements, despite that, are kept fossilized and used in only certain occasions.

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  3 дні тому +1

      Jey, jo, thanks for commenting. Yes, there is some Byzantine and Moroccan inspo in the design. Technically speaking, Alicent's headress is a diadem and Rhaenyra's fealty headress is a Kukoshnick although it has the same shape as a Tudor era French hood but without the hood.

      @@Costume_CO Nice! Thanks for the lingo of it all! Anyhow, what I like is that, regarding GoT, HotD seams to convey that clothes are more conservative -- as it should be, 'cause it happens before -- as woman headpieces are shown still in fashion for formal situations.

    Looking forward to your analysis of Season 2's costumes! Even from just this one trailer, there seems to be a huge improvement in the quality of the costumes. By bringing in elements of the previous season's it makes it feel more connected. Like time has passed but it still feels like part of the same world. Love that wine confection Rhaenyra is wearing and the one with the dragon shoulder embellishments. The one scene with Alicent by the lake is so ethereal. So keen!

    Thank you for mentioning that moment with Alicent on green chair, I thought it just me…my immediate reference was Scarlett's O’Hara green dress made of curtain(same out of place feeling), really weird reference I must say 😃 But looks like Alicent’s outfits in new season are breaking character, in 1st season she had lost herself and that process culminated with her armor-like dress and enormous medallion in episode 9 and now it just forgotten or what? Really strange.
    Could you please elaborate on why it’s good that they are constantly making references to Daenerys outfits. GoT is 150-ish years after HoD, Valyria's culture is long dead, there is no way Daenerys garments are based on “authentic” Valyrian stuff. But Targaryens in HoD are close descendants of Valyria’s cultural tradition, so we have quite distinct garments at funeral and wedding scenes in episode 7 and zero(or way distant) reference to them through the show. Isn’t funeral/wedding rituals one of the most conservative things in any culture? Also the wedding scene suggests that since men and women had very similar garments they had equal social status…but gender inequality is one of the main conflicts in both shows.

    • @kfmutrus
      @kfmutrus 6 місяців тому

      @@alikarol3 Guess they choose to stick with something familiar rather than make a proper “historical” dive. I’ve seen early sketches of Temime’s work for HotD; she had a whole new silhouette for Rhaenyra, so she is not the one to blame.

    • @alchemyst1c
      @alchemyst1c 5 місяців тому +1

      Braids are not unique to the Dothraki, though! They might be when it comes to symbolism, but we see Starks, Lannisters, etc donning braids, too. Plus, the Targs don't wear as many braids as Daenerys does, nor as often. :)@@alikarol3

    • @alchemyst1c
      @alchemyst1c 5 місяців тому +1

      In Old Valyria, gender equality was similar of that to Dorne, so it makes sense for their garments to reflect that, and for Rhaenyra to want to be seen as equal to Daemon in their marriage. It also makes sense for Rhaenyra to harken back to her ancestry, which would put more emphasis on her being the true heir (similar to how Aegon wear the Conqueror's crown & wields Blackfyre). Her focus on Valyrian traditions adds onto that point, which means she knows her ancestors, meaning she is a true Targaryen. Whereas Aegon must wear every symbol of legitimacy to further prove his claim (in spite of him being a man, which gives him an advantage) while knowing nothing about being a Targaryen. He was raised as a Hightower masquerading as a Targaryen.
      Also, there is more to being a Targaryen/Valyrian than the Conqueror, which Rhaenyra proves through her intimate knowledge of the ritual & clothing involved in a Targaryen/non-Westerosi wedding. It is more than just symbolism for Rhaenyra. She actually speaks her ancestors' language, she understands the writing, she understands the culture - unlike Aegon.
      (Sorry for rambling and not making much sense; to be honest I just wanted to take an opportunity to info dump about HoTD/GoT lol. My reply started off with the intention to make actual points before I started gushing without really relating to anything else you said. My apologies lol)

    • @kfmutrus
      @kfmutrus 5 місяців тому

      @@alchemyst1c No worries here, HotD was a bit on the hodgepodge side with its ideas, especially cultural. It’s already more than a year passed since s1 aired but it looks like no one was able to make a decent analysis of its core story, maybe everyone has problems with making actual points about this story 😀 I agree with you that there was some effort made to pose Blacks and Greens rivalry as cultural conflict(old ways vs new ways) but it was blown to pieces when Rhaenyra and Daemon NON-Westerosi wedding was recognised as legitimate by the State(in less than 10 minutes of screen time, LOL). How? Why? No answers for us. I think the writers handled all Valyrian references really badly, like they didn't even know what should happen next or where those things should lead characters. Same thing with Aegon Prophecy which was used only to drive in wedge between Viserys and Rhaenyra, Rhaenyra and Daemon.
