- Today's #MusicMonday release highlights the work of NEC alumna Florence Price, the first female African-American composer to be presented by a major orchestra. Maria Ioudenitch ’20 MM, ’22 AD, Grant Houston ’20, ’23 MM, ’24 GD, Sarah Darling ’07 MM, ’23 DMA, and Francesca McNeely ’18 GD perform Price's String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor.
ABOUT FLORENCE PRICE
Florence Smith (1887-1953) was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, one of three children in a mixed-race family. Despite racial issues of the era, her family was well respected and did well within their community. Her father was a dentist and her mother was a music teacher who guided Florence's early musical training. She had her first piano performance at the age of four and had her first composition published at the age of 11.
By the time she was 14, Florence had graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. She subsequently enrolled at New England Conservatory with a major in piano and organ. At NEC, she studied composition and counterpoint with composers George Chadwick and Frederick Converse, and wrote her first string trio and symphony. She graduated in 1906 with honors, and with both an artist diploma in organ and a teaching certificate.
But it was as a composer that Price made her most lasting mark. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra premiered her Symphony in E minor on June 15, 1933, making Price’s piece the first composition by an African-American woman to be played by a major orchestra. Price wrote other extended works for orchestra, chamber works, art songs, works for violin, organ anthems, piano pieces, spiritual arrangements, four symphonies, three piano concertos, and a violin concerto.

It's wonderful to hear the works of African American composers gaining more performances and also being performed with such grandeur and world class musicianship as they so truly deserve. It was so amazing to hear this is its entirety. Huge compliments to this string quartet for this stupendous reading.
Too bad this gifted composer is unable to hear her works performed by world class ensembles today. Clearly her time has come.

@@Glogassonic77 When I made my last contribution to the Cleveland Orchestra (the best band in the land) I urged them to program the music of Florence Price, not as tokenism but because her music has traction, and should be performed.

@@johkkarkalis8860 The Cleveland Orchestra is wonderful (unforgettable Stravinsky conducted by Boulez!). Florence's music speaks directly to people's hearts. It has a delicate depth, a great elegance... And I really like the way she orchestrates. I'd love it was played more often.
@@Glogassonic77 Pierre Boulez was the indispensable presence with the Cleveland Orchestra following George Szell's unexpected death .
His Stravinsky was marvelous along with his Debussy.
Florence Price's scoring was remarkable; all the more reason for programming her works. I do believe her day will come, if it has not already arrived.
You tube performs a valuable service in presenting composers that are not necessarily in the so called "top fifty".

I heard this thing for first time in Liverpool few months ago. To be fair there is plenty of beautiful music around. Still this should be considered as a foundation stone of american music.
The most intense and emotional music I've ever heard frmn this tragically underrated composer. She's best known for her symphonies, but maybe chamber music did more to bring out her soul. Brava!

Two musical antecedents: Schubert’s quartet in a minor and Brahms’ in the same key. A hint of Dvorak as well. Beautiful performance.
Not only that but to perform this in beautiful Jordan Hall which has great ambiance and acoustics.
Yes. The Brahmsian influence is particularly pronounced in her G major quartet, the opening of which is basically an homage to Brahm's piano concerto no. 2.
