    In this video, Jessica the Museum Guide (that’s me!) takes you on a guided tour of underrated objects and paintings in the Louvre. While nothing in the Louvre is truly underrated (it’s in the world’s most famous museum, after all!) these are worthy things that often get left out of ‘top ten’ itineraries.
    So, I’ve designed an in-depth museum tour that covers 13 fascinating paintings and objects that might not be on your radar. I delve into the history and symbolism of these hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems, giving you a Louvre tour that you can use to plan your trip (or just enjoy from your sofa).
    Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe. Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts about these wonderful objects and paintings, and tell me which ones I should include in the future.

    I'm so glad you did the foundations! I saw them shortly after they were opened to the public and its still my favorite part of the Louvre! My friends would kid me about "the basement at the Louvre." I would love to see Pere Lachaise. I really liked seeing the different "non-famous" person above ground tombs. They're so beautiful!. I'm always delighted to see anything you post, so whatever you pick next will be perfect!

    I’m always interested in the obscure and little celebrated beauties that dwell around hidden corners in the great galleries. Saint John the Baptist is a glorious piece…and I have always thought there is a seductive aspect to his expression. You always spoil us, and I love it. I can never choose favourites when you expose us to so many masterpieces that cover so many eras and periods of history. There is a touch of the Divine that threads through them all.
    I will not have the chance to visit the Louvre again in this life, so your taking me is a treat for which I offer my deepest thanks. The Cupid and Psyche has long been magnetic to me, I could gaze at it for days without resting my eyes. To see the Old Gods and Goddesses portrayed throughout so many times by so many hands, many long forgotten, reminds us that the Divine endlessly inspires us. Thank you again for this.🖤🇨🇦

    The statue of Eros and psyche was my favourite thing in the whole museum. I don't know why I loved it so much.
    I bought a bookmark of the statue from the museum gift shop and it was my go to bookmark for about 15 years until it vanished! It might just be a bookmark but I was so upset to lose it!

    As I live in Australia, I doubt I will ever get to the Louvre in person, so thank you - and another visit about the more secret/odd/weird exhibits would be good 😀 When I did Art History in around 1971 the statue was known as the 'Nike of Samothrace', it has always been one of my favourites. I suppose nowadays people would think that name an ancient shoe! (We did know that it was 'winged victory' I think, it was a long time ago! ). I am surprised at the amount of ancient artifacts, the British museums aren't the only ones. Th is was one of your best!👏👏👏

    hehe I recently finished reading Delacroix's journals and he had a few things to say about Ingres' technique too ;)

  • @paristoptips
    @paristoptips 3 місяці тому

    Following what you said about Ingres' Odalisque and Manet's Olympia, there was a great exhition at Orsay in 2015 called "Splendour and Misery. Pictures of Prostitution, 1850-1910". it seems that a lot of the great masters in the 1çth and beginning of the 20th centuries have painted prostitutes: Manet, Van Gogh, Degas and, of course, Toulouse-Lautrec. But to me, the masterpiece of all these "specific" paintings has to be "Rolla", by Henri Gervex, that you'de be able to see at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux.

  • @chrisball3778
    @chrisball3778 3 місяці тому +1

    I have to go with the traditional interpretation of Gabrielle D'Estrees and her sister. Someone had to pay for that painting, and I don't think either Henri or Gabrielle would have wanted her to be portrayed as an incestuous lesbian. It's worth noting that Henri put on the ring during the coronation in order to show that he was symbolically wedded to the kingdom, so for Gabrielle to be shown holding it implies the possibility of a new marriage for the king.
    Henri absolutely adored Gabrielle, and wanted to marry her against the wishes of most of his advisors. He seems to have genuinely admired and respected her, seeking her advice on political issues, asking her to manage many of his financial affairs for him, and allowing her to accompany him on some of his military campaigns (not that he was ever monogamous). He got his marriage to Marguerite of Valois annulled by the Pope and turned down a number of political marriages in order to try to marry her, prior to her sudden death.
    None of that precludes the idea that Henri might have also wanted a spicy painting of his favourite mistress and commissioned the work with a dual purpose. Or that Gabrielle might have wanted to celebrate her pregnancy, but thought making it a salacious bath scene might have helped keep Henri interested in her while she went through pregnancy. Or even that the artist one of them hired might have started getting pervy ideas while he made the painting. But to me the overall purpose of the work must have been a romantic tribute that looks weird to modern eyes, rather than just 16th century pornography.
    Absolutely awesome choices, as always. Loads of stuff I never saw when I've visited the Louvre before. And when you talk about the works that I have seen, I learn a tonne of new things about them. I love The Wedding at Cana, but didn't know it was basically the 16th century equivalent of the Sgt. Pepper's album cover! Made me really want to go back there.

    • @TheMuseumGuide

      @@TheMuseumGuide The French Wars of Religion is one of the most under-appreciated historical periods ever- wars, assassinations, conspiracies, duels and romance... it was the real-life Game of Thrones.
      An alternative history where Gabrielle d'Estrees got to be Queen, and hers and Henri's kids inherited the Bourbon crown is oddly fascinating.

    Another great video, some great choices in here - the anatomical impossibility of Ingres' Odalisque doesn't detract from the picture's overall appeal but it does make me giggle when I see it :) Incidentally, there's liaison between 'x' or 's' and a vowel, so 'beaux arts' is pronounced 'bohzar' and 'des arts' is 'dayzar' :)
