Sakurai did quit after Kirby Air Ride since he disliked the constant pressure for more sequels, but he also seems to like Kirby Air Ride itself a lot as well. The fact that he waited until the game was finally done to quit, combined with the fact he referenced it a lot in the Smash bros games he made after (Dragoon is my favorite items in Smash Bros and even played a big part in Subspace Emissary) makes me think he actually liked how it turned out. That's just my opinion though. I liked the fact you put it in last place actually, made me learn a lot more about it's history and allowed me to think of it in a different light.
Based on what I've heard and some research I've done to confirm it, Sakurai leaving Hal had nothing to do with him being sick of Kirby sequels. He was actually dissatisfied with the gaming industry in general at the time, believing that developers weren't getting paid enough for their work; their salaries were unchanged when a game sold more, so they often just stuck to making safer games rather than taking risks. He also resented the fact that the sales people knew what consumers wanted more than the people who actually developed the games, causing a disconnect between developers and what players would actually be interested in. Thus, I suppose that he felt leaving Hal and becoming a freelancer would let him better address these issues and connect to the players. With this in mind, the reasoning behind Air Ride's ranking feels unjustified.
Oh yeah, heavily unjustified. Kirby Airride was amazing. Granted it didn't have the commercial success of Mariokart, but it did it's best and it does actually coincide with many aspects of both the games and the anime even.
Right?! Kirby doesn’t suck (by even the least bit) in terms of his quality. He sucks because it’s the tip of the iceberg of the passion of Kirby (character/franchise)!
Fr, that’s why I love it, the only other franchises with such consistencies and little-to-no bad games that I can think or are Mario and Legend of Zelda. And I’d say Kirby is more quality consistent than either of those.
Tbf the Dream Friends made an otherwise average Kirby game worth coming back to months after release, so I don’t really mind them being post-launch DLC.
Honestly, star Allies was kinda complete at launch, it just wasn't very good at launch. My favorite part of the dlc was the Guest Star mode playthroughs for the dream friends because they had unique levels that both made use of their abilities and heavily referenced their games of origin. For example: Dark Meta Knight had basically a metroidvania level towards the end of his playthrough and Magalor had a series of mini challenges with portals from Return to Dream land connecting them. The base game was just pretty uninspired and the previous 2 games set the bar way higher than ever before.
Kirby's Air Ride didn't make Sakurai sad - heck, he seemed to like it a lot, given how much he references it in Smash Bros. It was just the general pressure for sequels that he didn't like. Saying he disliked Air Ride because of that seems like a stretch.
Return to Dreamland was probably the near-zenith of what the platforming Kirby game could reach (you could make an argument for Triple Deluxe or Robobot and I'd still agree). It's easily my favorite Kirby game for its simple multiplayer, the boss fights and their design, a plethora of new abilities, graphics that just hit different, and a villain that (while not as creepy as other Kirby villains) definitely stands out as being one of the better ones. Everything I ever wanted in a Kirby multiplayer is here. City Trial was one of the best things about AirRide and while it was the only thing that really made it stand out, it still had my friends and I constantly playing decades later. I have no problems having it at #2 on my list and I'll personally die on that hill. With regards to The Forgotten Land, that game should be last place for the control scheme, the lackluster design of levels and how they nerfed abilities (and no I'm not talking about the forging mechanic).
For 1, it was $40, for 2, the abilities themselves had very limited moves compared to the mainline 3ds entries, and 3, people were just expecting way more from it but it just felt very basic and didn't have that much of a Kirby feel to it, in fact it feels pretty out of place compared to most other multiplayer Kirby Spin offs.
Did he forget to include Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland or did I just accidentally skip over it? Otherwise, a really great list minus the hot take on Air Ride. 😂
I was waiting to hear that one and assumed I must have missed it the first time around. That was an incredibly solid remake and one of my favorites. Plus, after you beat the game 100% you can play through the entire thing as Meta Knight. Just a really fun time all around. Not hard, but definitely well balanced and polished.
He didn't rank the original Super Star either, so I'm guessing he only wanted to rank what he considers the best version of each game. Still kinda weird that he didn't even acknowledge Nightmare in Dream Land's existence though.
I will never understand how People think that Adventure is better than Nightmare in Dreamland. It's literally better in every way. It looks better and it plays much better, so why do so many People think the original is better than the remake?
While NiDL might be better objectively, I prefer how the original looks. Plus NiDL had a bunch of unnecessary level design changes (like removing some rooms or just changing them) so it's not fully the same. The only things I think it does better are Meta Knightmare (but it's definitely the worst version of that mode since every future version made it more interesting) and the multiplayer (but it's really hard to set up). My favorite version of the game is definitely the 3Ds remake since it looks like the original and gets rid of all the lag
Agreed, plus it has the meta knightmare mode and 4 player coop. The visuals are a huge step up, there’s no frame rate issues, the music is more polished, and instead of having to jump and then tap the up button for Kirby to float, you can just keeping tapping the jump button. Great remake and better in every way except nostalgia. I can make the same argument for super star ultra but I do love the snes Kirby visuals slightly more the the ds one so I won’t make that argument
Kirby Air Ride is objectively one of the best Kirby games because it’s one of the only ones to care about replayability. Not even going to start on the multiplayer but I guess Rabbid never got the chance to play it with friends :/
When you're first games in the series allow you to unlock harder settings and adjust health then they obviously care something about replayability. Air ride doesn't even care about playability, much less replay. It's just inferior to other racing games and very boring.
i haven't played as many kirby games as i'd like but i still have a nostalgic soft spot for Crystal Shards! My friends and I were obsessed with finding all the ways you could combine the powers, and i still miss that!
I am actually in the process of collecting and completing more Kirby games. I managed to stay up-to-date up to Return to Dreamland, but after that, I sort of dropped off for a long while. I want to get back into it, but I wanna get the games I'm missing and catch up first. Like... 11 years of kirby games. For the record, Kirby: Crystal Shards was always my favorite, as was Air Ride. I disagree and agree with your statement. I find it very enjoyable, but I definitely agree that it is rough around the edges, and that it could have used some polish and/or a sequel to make it better.
Going to have to call you out for [15:15] where you said that Planet Robobot has "much more copy abilities" (than Triple Deluxe). Yes, PR introduced several new abilities and even brought some old favorites back, but in order to not overwhelm the player it also _removed several abilities that were in TD,_ meaning that PR has roughly the same number of abilities, only beating TD thanks to the "secret" Smash Bros and UFO abilities I believe. Now, if you meant the different _movesets_ for the Robobot Armor, I can understand that, but that ISN'T what you said.
Agreed, I think they only introduced three new ones (one of which is Poison which is almost identical to Water), and the robobot ability sets are very small compared to the regular copy abilities. Microphone Robobot was the only one to add move possibilities instead of taking them away and often they couldn't attack in some directions such as upwards.
I'm probably the only person in existence to actually LIKE Kirby Air Ride. I enjoy the soundtrack and the absolute chaos that tends to occur when I play it with friends or family. Also may be a bit biased since I grew up with it XD
I mean no disrespect but there’s no way you played a decent kart racer with two distinct versions of racing, mini games, a small city to explore with cute secrets, and vehicles with unique attributes and said “I’d rather be playing a 3x3 slide puzzle right now.” That said, pretty good and fair video over all. I got where you were coming from even when I disagreed (save perhaps the very beginning lol).

Maybe it’s nostalgia, because I grew up playing the heck out of it, more than any other Kirby game - and beating it and 100%ing it (and then beating and 100%ing it on the challenge/difficult mode), but I always ❤️ Kirby’s Adventure! 😀
Wait, you're telling me that the game I've known my entire life as Kirby's Ghost Trap is actually called Kirby Avalanche? And Kirby's Fun Pak is actually Kirby Superstar?
Mine would have to be a tie between Air Ride and Squeak Squad. I only owned 3 Kirby titles long ago and never had the chance to experience some more of the handhelds and older-gen console Kirby games when I was younger. (poverty's an ass) But when I got those chances, I adored what I got. I wanted to get Epic Yarn, Return to Dreamland and the anniversary collection, but lord those things ran off far too quickly where I live. And fast-forward years later, those prices... lord it won't get me near them soon enough unless i really want to shell out the funds. Yeah i can emulate it but I'm one of those who have a high preference of playing them on actual hardware.
Ironic that Tilt and Tumble is coming to Switch, I remember trying to play it upside down because I only had a gameboy advance and the cartridge slot is on the bottom instead of the top so the controls were all reversed skdfjgbkhb
It did, but only 2 abilities could utilize the actual mixing, being Sword and Bomb, and there were only 3 elements, Fire, Electricity, and Ice. It was cool that Wheel and Tornado could pick up Fire and Ice from the environment, but overall Star Allies has a much better representation of the idea of Elemental Mixing. Especially with Marx and Susie
Kirby Air Ride is still one of my favorite games of all time. I wish they would make a switch port for it (there may be one, just too lazy to find it if there is). IS IT TOO HARD TO ASK FOR A SWITCH SEQUEL FOR IT NINTENDO!?!

It's not even close for me Kirby's adventure and the NES is by far the best. Has more character and style than any of the other kirbys IMO. The music really pushes it over the edge tho. Probably my favorite video game music of all time.
I mean, there are games that are sub-par by Kirby standards, but that is true by definition. The original really is the weakest though. It's a relatively generic mascot platformer that would have been completely lost to time if not for the copy ability added to all future games to help the series be distinct and fun.
There are games I would consider sub-par, like most of the early spinoffs, but Team Kirby Clash Deluxe is definitely a game I consider to be bad. Super Kirby Clash fixed the main issue, which was the game not giving you enough gem apples, but it's still probably not that great
I honestly didn’t like Squeak Squad. It does have some fun gimmicks like the elemental mixing and ability scrolls, but both of these were executed better in Star Allies and Forgotten Land respectively. Plus the level design is pretty bad at times and it has probably the worst characterization of the main trio, especially Kirby himself, out of all the entire main series games. Aside from that and the fact that DL2 and 3 are too high and DL1 and Star Allies being too low, I overall agree with this list for the most part, especially the higher we go with the Top 3 matching mine but with SSU and FL switched
Air Ride was never good

And fast-forward years later, those prices... lord it won't get me near them soon enough unless i really want to shell out the funds. Yeah i can emulate it but I'm one of those who have a high preference of playing them on actual hardware.
Ironic that Tilt and Tumble is coming to Switch, I remember trying to play it upside down because I only had a gameboy advance and the cartridge slot is on the bottom instead of the top so the controls were all reversed skdfjgbkhb
Squeezed squad had ability mixing too, very underrated
It did, but only 2 abilities could utilize the actual mixing, being Sword and Bomb, and there were only 3 elements, Fire, Electricity, and Ice. It was cool that Wheel and Tornado could pick up Fire and Ice from the environment, but overall Star Allies has a much better representation of the idea of Elemental Mixing. Especially with Marx and Susie
Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland is my favorite and the only kirby game I've ever played so my list is kinda short lol
You have terrible taste Kirby slide is one of the greatest pieces of media ever
Incredible story world building characters music and gameplay
I am glad that the first time I picked up a Kirby game that it was planet robot
Kirby’s Adventure is my pick, with Kirby’s Dream Course a close second. The latter is such a perfect combination of Kirby and mini-golf.
Squeak Squad was my first Kirby game. Loved it!
One of the first games I 100%-ed
Kirby Air Ride is still one of my favorite games of all time. I wish they would make a switch port for it (there may be one, just too lazy to find it if there is). IS IT TOO HARD TO ASK FOR A SWITCH SEQUEL FOR IT NINTENDO!?!
My favorite Kirby game is Return to Dreamland! Followed by Epic Yarn, Canvas Curse, and Kirby 64 in no particular order.
Then buy a switch and play Kirby's return to Dreamland deluxe
Sorry I meant biy Kirby's return to Dreamland deluxe and then you can play it
No Return to Dreamland mark for the video
Robobot has poison kirby, so it is my favorite. I want that powerup back!
What about Nightmare in Dreamland on the GBA?
It’s a remake of Kirby’s Adventure
@@BJGvideos he's putting what he considers to be the "best" version of each game on the list. Notice how Extra epic yarn doesn't show up at all. I feel like the rules section of the video was mostly missing so it's understandable to ask about this.
@@rabbidluigi it’s a replacement of Kirby adventure there’s no reason to go back playing adventure when nightmare of dreamland was better in every single way and it has 4 player coop
Air Ride is my fav kirby game ;_;
Kirby Air Ride is really good. Abomination.
Also: Clearly the worst Kirby game is the sliding panel puzzle one on the eReader.
Don’t agree with the list but it’s nice to see the Kirby love
Tilt n Tumble was a great game if the lighting conditions are right

And he said: Air Ride is and will probably always be the absolute worst Kirby game ever
Antdude has entered the chat.
It's not even close for me Kirby's adventure and the NES is by far the best. Has more character and style than any of the other kirbys IMO. The music really pushes it over the edge tho. Probably my favorite video game music of all time.
no return to dreamland on the wii?
Kirby Avalanche was really fun actually.
I agree with the last 3 but for some titles for GBA... I don't know
Squeak Squad has the best OST, and Dreamland 3 and 64 are S-tier!!
Kirby Ride being worse than Rainbow Curse is a real hot take if I've ever seen one
I wish Kirby Super Star Ultra and was on Wii U’s eShop
What about Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland?
I still haven't beaten "Forgotten Worlds". I like it just fine, but I'm just not in a "Kirby mood", you know?
I don’t think there’s a single Kirby game that I’d consider “bad”, or even “sub-par”, so I’m interested to see how this one plays out
I mean, there are games that are sub-par by Kirby standards, but that is true by definition.
Super Kirby Clash fixed the main issue, which was the game not giving you enough gem apples, but it's still probably not that great
Which Kirby game would be best for a 9 year old boy?
I honestly didn’t like Squeak Squad. It does have some fun gimmicks like the elemental mixing and ability scrolls, but both of these were executed better in Star Allies and Forgotten Land respectively. Plus the level design is pretty bad at times and it has probably the worst characterization of the main trio, especially Kirby himself, out of all the entire main series games. Aside from that and the fact that DL2 and 3 are too high and DL1 and Star Allies being too low, I overall agree with this list for the most part, especially the higher we go with the Top 3 matching mine but with SSU and FL switched
