Great show 101! Great seeing the drum major reunion and Janelle Monae's "Let It Go" the 101 played that Champagne danced sounded awesome. That one is a definitely a keeper for the book.
That "Let The Church Say Amen" was alright ! That trombone player who plays the part when the full band comes in gets me everytime he plays that part ... but overall really good job.
Duh, I 'm from Atlanta and used to march in the Wolverine Band; and I was just stating especially for you hit dogs that no one can play it like the originators MBC Wolverines!!!!!!
Leonard Carter Thats debatable. Everyone outside of Atlanta knows that MOB became popular only because of Drumline but they were never the best sounding band.
Do a little history MBC band appeared 2 times in the Rose parade, never said that they were the best sounding band but they were definitely in the top 10 on any given day!!!!!
Funny you should say that because my take on it is that a song's originator is the person who wrote it and not the band that played it first, which is who MBC is - only the band that played Spotlight Groove first. I've heard MBC versions back in the day and I actually like both versions by both bands, but I prefer the SCSU version, nothing against MBC. No one is trying to play it like MBC. They had their style and SCSU have theirs. What's even funnier is that you - the Wolverine - came to the clip of the Marching 101 Bulldogs to make this claim. Who are you trying to convince, yourself? Mr. Ellis helped give MBC their presence when they had one and now he's doing great things at SCSU with the 101. The difference is, SCSU already had a presence under the direction and leadership of the late, great, Mr. Ronald J. Sargeant, one the best band directors, arrangers, and composers in the game. Ask Mr. Ellis this and he will tell you the same.
I love the 1-0-1...Marched from 85-89...But damn....For a band that size...do you really need that many drum majors....? I just saying....I thinking 4 ass kicking DM instead for 50....
And what I will say is that we didn't add "The Brown Sound", Mr. Ellis added "HIS sound" when he arrived. No band creates its own sound without a band director at the helm including Morris Brown. I agree that Mr. Ellis departure has had an obvious effect on the 101 because in my opinion, the band hasn't been quite the same since he left and some are still upset about the way he was let go. However, in the event you and others didn't know, the 101 was an established band with an established sound under the Ronald J. Sargeant era of the band long before Mr. Ellis arrived. In the few years after Mr. Sargeant's departure/retirement the band lost some of its shine until Mr. Ellis arrived in late 2004. He brought back that spark and spunk the 101 lost after Mr. Sargeant's departure and he does get credit for that. In fact, I wish he was still around but the Marching 101 bands during the Sargeant Era in the 80s and early to late 90s were bands to be reckoned with. It wasn't until Mr. Sargeant became ill and ultimately retired that the Marching 101 started a slow downward spiral until Mr. Ellis arrived. I like for folks to know at least some of this band's history.
blkplaya9891 thanks for that, a lot I didn't know and I appreciate it. I hope I didn't offend you or the 101. I'm a Georgia native a big fan of Morris Brown and Mr. Ellis. I've watched clips of the 101 from Mr. Sargent's era & your absolutely right. But if you can, tell me exactly why was Mr. Ellis let go like that? It just seemed like it happened outta of nowhere. Again thanks for knowledge bro, I actually enjoyed reading it
No offense taken my friend. I've heard different reasons as to why he was let go and to those of us SCSU alums who welcomed his presence after Mr. Sargeant's departure, it did seem that his dismissal was rather abrupt and out the blue. According to a report in our local newspaper, "after 11 years as head of the S.C. State band, Ellis was notified in May 2015 that he was being demoted to music professor with a reduced salary of $51,500. As band director, his salary $94,968 a year." We didn't hear the specifics as to why the administration did this. Further, according to the newspaper, "on June 29, 2015, Mr. Ellis was notified by letter that he was being terminated through the university’s new fiscal exigency policy." According to the school, it was done via this "suspect" policy as a means to save the school some money. I NEVER bought that LIE by the way because if that were the case, there were several folks making 6 figures well above Mr. Ellis' salary who could've/should've been looked at and let go. In my opinion, that so-called "exigency policy" was just a ploy for the administration to get rid of folks they wanted to see gone. According some members of the street committee, he was warned by the administration for a few years about overspending in his budget and it continued after being warned by the administration....an administration mind you, who cut his budget each year of his tenure. Then there were those who said he was let go because he was one the few who stood his ground with the administration and of course they had to flex their muscles to so-called "put him in his place." I believe the latter simply based on how he was let go. It was personal in my opinion. They stripped him of the band director title and demoted him to the equivalent of an average classroom instructor in addition to cutting his salary by over $40,000. You don't get no more personal than that. If it were really about the money, I can't understand how the interim director's (Who used to be one Mr. Ellis assistant band directors at one point), salary jumped from $60K to $77K. Funny thing is that some of the staff that was with Ellis at Morris Brown is still with the Marching 101 today. He later filed a lawsuit against the school and this is last thing I heard about the ordeal. To this day, we don't know the results of that. The Marching 101 hasn't looked or sounded the same since his departure in my opinion. There are some that wanted to see Mr. Ellis gone who would beg to differ with my opinion, but I have been disappointed with the look and sound of the band each year following his departure. I was recently looking at past clips of the Ellis era of the 101 and saying to myself, if only the current band could return to that level. I will say and continue to say that you don't treat a band director of Mr. Ellis caliber in the manner he was treated. I am loyal alum to my beloved SCSU and band fan of the Marching 101 since childhood, and will defend them against anyone, but it was highly classless in the way Mr. Ellis was let go by some over-zealous folks who were trying to make a name for themselves by pushing their agenda that he needed to be handled in my opinion. I will remain hopeful for an opportunity for him to return though I don't think that will happen. I digress.
blkplaya9891 damn I wonder if he plans to go elsewhere or just retire. I think he still got a few years left in him he should try another school it would cool if he came back to the AUC, like CAU or Morehouse
Morris Brown aint never sound that good. They were just loud. Morris Brown has nothing on the SCSU of Sarge Era nor did they sound better than SCSU under Ellis.
You must only be relying on this clip to make such an off-base statement or maybe you are simply repeating it from hearing others say in the past because I was there live at this game and they were loud as heck and tell you the truth this is actually a small band compared to the 2007-2011 versions of the Marching 101.
No I am not I was at this game as well. I have seen bands half their size put out a bigger fuller sound and I have seen bands the same size if not bigger put out a bigger fuller sound as well. You must be relying on your limited band experience and exposure to make such an off base statement or maybe you are repeating what you heard.
Justin if you couldn't hear them, then it may not be because they weren't playing loud enough, it might just be your own personal issues of needing have your ears examined, because there were thousands of us who were there and they were adequately LOUD enough for us. But we do understand that among the thousands who were pleased with what they saw and heard of this band, that you can't please everyone. There will always be that one or two who will find some complaint to make. We get that.
Some homecomings are great, but SCSU's is the BEST!!! AINT NOT PARTY LIKE A BULLDOG PARTY!!
Great show 101! Great seeing the drum major reunion and Janelle Monae's "Let It Go" the 101 played that Champagne danced sounded awesome. That one is a definitely a keeper for the book.
GREAT SHOW, 101!! Best homecoming show I've seen in a while. The female announcer did a GREAT JOB!!
As a SCSU fan. This is awesome 👏🏾 love those MEAC bands

That "Let The Church Say Amen" was alright ! That trombone player who plays the part when the full band comes in gets me everytime he plays that part ... but overall really good job.
I would keep the female announcer.. she is the best that i've heard from ANY BAND! She should at least announce for Honda.
Wish there wasn't so many people on the side line. the joint DM performance was great
Love it
Spotlight Groove is a Morris Brown College thing and nobody has evr played like the Wolverines believe it!!!!!!!!
Where do u think Ellis came from bruh. ??
Duh, I 'm from Atlanta and used to march in the Wolverine Band; and I was just stating especially for you hit dogs that no one can play it like the originators MBC Wolverines!!!!!!

Do u have the drumline ! Like how people forget the drumline
Does anyone have any extensive parade footage?

I know damn well she did not ask for donations for uniforms🎈🎈🍗🍗💌
music sound ok but this show could not have taken 30 minutes to put together
SCSU can say what they want but adding "The Brown Sound" help yall. I don't think letting Mr. Ellis go was a good idea at all.

The drill is good but to be that large they lack sound.

Face the facts... they have horn holders.
You can believe "YOUR" facts bruh and in the process, get your ears examined. lol.
