I feel like this has nothing to do with dating anymore. It's just a lived-out fantasy of anxiety - specifically the notion that people would rather reject someone before that someone rejects them. All the video that Pewds and Ken react to proves is that people are generally afraid of getting to know new people. Who said they had to hit it off after the date? They could've just have a nice day as acquaintances and leave it at that, all paid for.
It's clear half the people in this video just want to be single and sleep with someone they find attractive. Based off of how they reject people. They aren't ready to enter a long term relationship. May as well be single and not waste other people's time and emotions.
the notion that people would rather reject someone before that someone rejects them is not exactly isolated in this case. there is a a big incentive to reject the person in front of you so you don't lose your turn if you sense even a hint of them wanting to reject you, so you can talk to other people.
In this situation quite a few of the guys were perfectly willing to talk after the button turned red until they saw how the first woman eliminated 3 people back to back before they even had a chance to talk so they had to take her out. and it was clear as day that anyone could react fast enough to at least attempt to press the button first which they didn't at first. so I really don't think this applies to everyone.

I think you're absolutely right! The fear and discomfort is real. I suspect there's a lot of subtle cues, like accent, appearance, fashion etc. If two people are subconsciously more conservative, then they would feel uncomfortable making friends with someone too different from themselves

I can imagine a few reasons as to why this played out as it did:
1. The women were so anxious of being rejected themselves that they just pressed the button as quick as possible to avoid rejection. The guys noticed that scheme and went along by 'paying back'. At least most of them seemed like they wanted to give the other a chance, unless it was someone who rejected a couple before them.
2. This became kind of competitive among the participants and in the end they wound up with 'who can reject the most'. This could either be a natural group dynamic, or it could have been insinuated by some participants in order to prevent a couple from actually winning.
3. They were paid and/or instructed to act like this for the views.
It was started by the women who as you said, kept on rejecting the men who just sat down, so as a reassuring thing for the other males in the back that have been rejected, they also pressed the button early.

I feel like it's because it was mostly women who asked questions on this one so as they said, they pressed the button when the other party was thinking about an answer. I don't have much hope that men would act much better.

I think the psychology of having the button always there and in view makes people try and find any reason to press it, and then they feel obliged to make a reason which is why it always sounds stupid. I think forcing at least one question to each person before the first button turning red, and telling them that you will have those 2 questions so people don't immediately get suspicious of the other person would add a lot
Just makes me think of those experiments where they have a lab rat pressing a button

I think you guys hit the nail on the head.
It's a fear of rejection. "I'm going to press it before they can". That's why the women press the button more and quicker - men are "used" to rejection more than women. Not that women don't get rejected, but the rejection is more subtle when it happens, due to the difference in how women flirt/hit on/ask for dates as opposed to men, who are more straight-forward.
and that women control and have more to lose in a relationship (parenthood etc) while men can have limited consequences in hooking up

Not just fear of rejection, but if you get rejected, you're essentially out of the game unless it loops back to you. So if you get the sense you're going to be rejected, rejecting them first is a survival strategy.
