  • Haiti's Island La Gonave is stolen by US companies for OIL
A summary of the "La Gonave Master Plan":
The developer, Global Renewable Energy, claims to be focused on "alternative energy projects," and has already pitched the plan to "buy" the island of La Gonave to the Haitian government, yet a public disclosure of the status of any agreements is unknown outside of the principles involved.
The developers' first priority is to build a "crude oil refinery", "petroleum product tank farm", "food processing plant", and "industrial port" in the planned "industrial city", but they are promoting their project (Ironic at all to call it the "La Gonave Master Plan?") as an "island paradise and business mecca", that will be a "home for international business and the destination for world travelers." Why develop La Gonave? Because "Developers within the energy sector will be more likely to assume the risks due to the large profit margins that may be realized by them." GRE minimizes the environmental impact that an oil refinery on La Gonave will have, saying:
"The oil refinery is created from mini-refineries. This type of refinery has much less impact on its surroundings. The refinery will be located within the industrial city and visually isolated from the rest of the island by the Jatropha Plantation. Additionally, the refinery and industrial city are located on La Gonave's most western tip thus minimizing any impact on La Gonave. The prevailing wind direction is from the east. This prevailing wind direction will carry the minimal emissions out to sea to the west thus not negatively impacting La Gonave or the rest of Haiti
When the project is complete in the 20 year span visualized by GRE, Haitians who remain on the island, will be 60% employed ("a large trainable workforce") by the project's proposed businesses (mostly the "industrial plantation"). Haitians might well ask, what of the 40% not employed? Also, what of the fact that local island residents will be hindered from traveling freely from/to the island because the only way to get there will be via a private executive airport or the large industrial dock for cruise ships?
The majority of the island (a 65,000 acre project) will be taken up by an "industrial plantation." Haitians should be concerned that the Republic of Haiti's government will only be designated as a "shareholder" in the proposed agreement. Who will be the civic authorities in this "island paradise"? It should be unacceptable that this "master" plan proposes a sort of Vatican City of the Caribbean with no official government oversight.
Will Haitians want a cadre of international business executives placidly profiting from the natural resources of Haiti and running the island of La Gonave like a "business?" Hopefully not.No Copyright Infringement intended. I DO NOT OWN THIS VIDEO

You guys are full of it. We Haitians like me from our beloved Lagonive will never let guys run Lagonive as a business. Our fathers died so you could never come here to do that. All of that will be done, but buy us people from Lagonive that rightfully own the Island. Thanks for noticing our resources. Never will none Haitians play that role.😂😂😢🎉

Sir, la Gonave may have a population of 88,000 + people. Too many of them are illiterate. Good people yes. But are not ready for employment of minimums.
I'm listening to your words and hear nothing for educational, medical facilities nor shelter for the almost 100,000 Haitians who do live there. Many families since 1610.
The land belongs to the Haitians. No Haitian government of any description has the right, power, or ability to carry out your described project.
We hear of your Master Plan and applaud your enthusiasm.
I encourage bringing your attention to former President Martelly's 2014 debacle that he inanely began on Isle a Vache. Failure 100%.
However your enterprise must work within the framework of the real Haiti.
Your project would not effect your executive body as an "emperor a vie". Capable Haitians must be embraced into top management; there are many.
Today we are framing the year of 2022.
    Haiti te chanje nèt nèt.
    Haiti has changed.
Haiti today has yet to answer for the murder of it's last elected president.
At this writing, the police force is inept, short on rank & file, budget, under trained & mal equipé.
There is not a democratically formed sitting government.
Today's de facto Prime Minister Henry attempts to manage by decree, as did the former deposed president.
The Cabinet has been in the "musical chairs" mode for decades.
The Chambre des Députés, the Parliament, has not existed since more than two years.
And finally, your project (to me), reads or sounds to be well apart from any possible realisation..
You might do well to research the events that befell America's Trans Linear Corporation at Isle La Tortue circa 1970's, and so many others.
Then Haiti's population was approximately 3.7 millions. Today it is pushing twelve millions. Do the math.
Haiti is the small 10,514 square mile westward portion of Hispanola. The larger Dominica Republic to the east.
    There are opportunities.
    But I would wait.
When WB, IMF, the UN, et all come to the common consensus that prudent development may be planned, incorporated with the population and culture as has been earlier highlighted, with a proper mandate by a democratic government; only then might a venture be entertained.
Two hundred plus years of Haiti has taught many of us some lessons that books do not proffer.

No one can steal what you never had, Haiti has no financial clout when it comes to development of La Gonave (we all know why), but regardless, today you have resources never exploited until now. Do you think all of America belongs to Americans? I just hope this is something that has to be approved and regulated by the Haitian government ($$$$),Corporations run the world and now Haiti. It's the future....

Why not engage the help of their CARICOM colleagues who could have shown them how to benefit best in developing the industry with multinational partners? Trinidad and Tobago is the only island nation to have successfully managed a massive oil and gas industry that helped the country to prosper. They are now assisting countries like Ghana to develop theirs.
