Boycott Tenerife? Canary Island Residents 'Fed-Up' with British Tourists
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 кві 2024
- British holidaymakers arriving in Tenerife for the Easter break have been met with anti-tourist graffiti - and a tense reception from locals.
Residents living in the Canary Islands have declared war and say they are 'fed-up' with British tourists who only 'drink cheap beer, lay in the sun and eat low-quality food'.
Should we boycott Tenerife?

Thank you, Stephanie, you are totally correct. For the rest of people who think otherwise, please, do "boycott" us. Is not that we have cheap prices "for you", is that we have reeeeally low wages and we, the locals, can't actually afford anything more expensive. So adapting our economy to tell tourists that we don't want cheap drunkards in our streets is just not possible for us, and btw, to say that we should change our pricing to send YOU messages might just be a bit too colonialist, don't you think?
Furthermore, most of the places that serve the typical fish and chips/ cheap beers that tourists like are literally owned by tourists. Not us Canarians or Tinerfeños. Tourists.
You people are complaining about things that your own fellow brits are doing abroad while they are immigrants (not "expats" :D). Don't blame it on us being "cheap and serving you the things you like". We are poor. Boycott us if you will, we are better that way with less entitled tourists that think they are 19 and 20th century colonizers discovering Africa all over again. We are not your playground. We deserve respect, period.
Wages in what sectors? If its tourism and the tourists leave there are no wages, if its non tourism who's running the companies/businesses etc that are paying low wages foreign or Spanish?
And as for colonies where exactly are the canaries? Looks like Africa to me hmmm.
@@unmagz EU taking good care of you then ? Government set wages, your not poor because of tourism quite the contrary in fact what would you be financially without?
Who sets the wages?
Good idea could be do it ,in places like sahara desert wich is very big, swiming pools caraokes, fish and chips bars,i little airport, and take brithis tourist there, kind of fake, resort, lot of drink, they dont will be care about.
They will just love it.
Brits came and set up fish and chip shops… it’s not the Spanish making fish and chips
think they’d be fine w out fish and chips love
What would your income source be without tourism?
go brigton next summer
@@martinking9945 try staying at home and let them figure it out
Spanish don't cater fish and chips for Brits, Brits do!
It's not against British people, it's against tourism in general. Last year, 14.6 million tourists arrived in the Canary Islands compared to the 2.2 million inhabitants of the archipelago. During 2024, 2.74 million tourists have arrived "only in Tenerife" which has 1 million inhabitants. You have already used twice as much water as the locals, (water that we do not have) and you have produced twice as much garbage as the locals. Our sea is dying, our fields are drying up. Our life goes out. The situation is unsustainable, local people live in precarious conditions while tourism devours the island. When the island becomes a desert, you will change your vacation destination and we will continue here without life.
The government needs to tax the tourism sector to fund desalination option's is one idea as I'm guessing the tourist income isn't an issue in itself, salt water pools could be made mandatory by government, filtration systems could be implemented in large commercial properties hotel's etc for flushing of toilets etc with recycled water, thinking along an environmental path a natural filtration system where seawater is pumped up to a high point and passed through increasingly smaller sediment etc to create fresh water.
Am just an average Joe tourist but off the tip of my head there are some solutions.
What are the government doing then?
Thank you for explaining your view. I personally understand and will not come. Surely won't spend at multinational companies. Never done it, always local economy. No journalist in the UK has managed to be so clear and polite when explaining the situation. But we all know the low level of mainstream media. Hope the situation gets better for you. My friend visited 15 years ago and said only good things about the island and its people. Good luck. ❤
Is that the tourists fault though - or the fault of the Spanish government not putting adequate infrastructure in place to cater responsibly for the tourists they are attracting.
As the saying goes - 'build it and they will come' - the Spanish and their government built it - the tourists came. Cause and effect.
@@martinking9945 Putting taxes on tourists doesn't solve anything. They can pay taxes with coins that fall out of their pockets. The tourists who come here have a high purchasing power compared to the social class of the majority of Canarian people. It's not a question of money. It is a question of space and resources. There are things that cannot be paid for with money. When resources run out, what are you going to buy?
There is extreme amount of water here. Just build a desalination plant.
Local here, the real problem is that locals are struggling to find a place to live because of the massive tourism, Airbnbs everywhere in every little town so now rent is just crazy , we have the highest poverty rate in Spain despite the millions of tourists we receive here, in the islands, were the resources like water are very very limited. Yes, we live from tourism but locals never see this money, jobs are paid the lowest, rent is paid the highest, water cuts in many towns because we are running out of it , its easy to see we have a big problem here. That graffiti just sums up all of this, of course we want tourists to come, but we need to fix this situation. Gentrification because of the tourism is happening all around the world, is not our only problem, its been happening in London for a while too, but here we live in islands, where can you go when your town is fully dedicated to Airbnb , and every other town? Just think about it, its not about brits or fish and chips. And of course politicians here doesnt want you to know the real situation cause theyre getting richer. A volcano destroid many homes in la palma, there are still people without a home, but our politicians are focusing on the construction of a massive resort with pools while people are in struggle. I can go on and on , just do a bit of research.

The protest is to protect the island, its people and nature from the adverse consequences of tourism and greed. It is not against tourists, I blame greedy Canarian politicians and big hotel owners no international tourists
Tourists are to blame too as they perfectly know they are profiting for this situation. The low prices they get when coming here is a direct consequence of this exploitative system they support. They can choose not to support it , too. Tourism in a place with less resources is just neo-colonialism as the place you visit has been shaped to appeal to you (the tourist) as much as possible, many times by foreigners actors (like the many hotels and complexes owned by Europeans we have in Canarias).
@@unmagz who is alowing to build more hotels in natural spaces? no tourists but canarian politicians

Massive tourism has a bad impact in locals lives. If you want to take it personal and think that those signs are just for the Brits and that somehow they are judging your behavior then go ahead but it's much more than that.
The problem lies with successive governments since the 80s pouring money into London/Manchester and forgetting about the rest of the UK and the cost of living and earnings disparity. Brits used to take summer holidays in Cornwall, Brighton, Kent, Dorset etc until those places became ridiculously overpriced relative to the Spanish & Greek Islands.
Its almost as if money isnt the end all or be all and having manners and respect are more important.

You are not understanding a thing. We are not against tourists, we are against an economic model (mass tourism, Sun&Sand tourism) based on infinite tourism growth that is destroying our land. If you want to boycott the Canaries you will be actually doing us a favour. Cheers!
The Islanders are hostile - getting worse, vacation not worth it. They are unable to handle infrastructure, tourism etc. locally - political disaster, that colors the Islanders.
It would be something if our non-British visitors respected our customs. They should lead the way over this for other nations.
The less of the Brits abroad type, the better, makes it more enjoyable for those of us that actually like to explore the place and sample the food and drinks.
The real problem in the Canary Islands isn't tourism, it's the governments we've had over the last two decades. They haven't invested in infrastructure. In Tenerife, our population has almost doubled, from 1 million to nearly 2 million residents, not counting tourists. Yet, our infrastructure remains the same as it was 40 years ago-roads, sewage treatment plants, hospitals-all neglected with only temporary fixes applied. As a resident of Adeje, a premier tourist municipality, I'm ashamed of the image we present-broken promenades, neglected gardens, dry fountains, and litter everywhere. What kind of tourism can we expect when this is what we offer? It's a long-standing issue, and our governments in Tenerife and the Canary Islands are to blame. They talk about high-quality tourism, but how can we demand quality tourism when we sold ourselves out by promoting all-inclusive packages and giving tour operators the power to decide who comes to the islands?
Many other countries will accept British holidaymaker 😊
Maybe they need to deal with the drunken element more severely and price out the “lager louts”

Dile los rollos Stephanie
The flab is insane!!!
The issue here is that the Government is prioritising the tourism industry over the locals' well-being.
The population in the Canary Islands is 2.206.000 and every year we're visited by 15 million tourists, that's nearly 7 times our population in a year or like half our population every month.
But what's wrong is that despite the islands having one of the highest GDPs in the country, the Canary Islands rank #1 in the lowest average salary (about 20% lower than in Mainland Spain) and rank #1 at risk of poverty (where 40% of our population is at high risk of poverty).
This is because big tourism companies, with their all-inclusive deals and their poorer quality products, are devouring small local businesses. This forces locals to find other ways of making money, like renting out their homes as Airbnbs or the offering of non-regulated tours/attractions, all of which further damages the local economy.
Furthermore, the number of foreigners who buy properties in the islands has been on the rise in recent years and, that, together with the proliferation of airbnbs and the lack of available properties, has made buying or even renting a property an impossible task for locals, prices have skyrocketed.
All of this is what has pushed locals to protest (in the form of graffitis or with big protests like the one that'll be happening on the 20th April) against the Government, who in the meantime is trying to build more hotels and resorts.
We understand that tourism plays a key role in our economy and, as locals, we have always been welcoming of tourists, but the islands can't handle any more tourists. Protecting our people and our land (with its many natural wonders) against gentrification and mass tourism should be as much of a priority.
What would help in this situation is for tourists to be respectful with our natural environment by not polluting and by helping protect our unique flora and fauna. And just like Stephanie said in the video, being respectful to locals and local customs helps too, especially if by doing so you also help the local economy.
Go back to your Politicians - select them wisely
Yes I think you're right on all of that. And it's completely understandable. In fact I'm amazed how tolerant local people are.
Overtourism is just the symptom, the political system there is the cause. Because it allows it and didn't / doesn't care about the situation enough. It's the local politics duty to take care of the locals. Political business & greed is the real destruction of the islands. It has to change now, or in future it will be even worse with even more tourists and latvians, ukrainians (how even as refugees?!), germans buying apartments there. Tourism tax I believe won't solve the issue. A proper political solution could!
We are currently in Cyprus been welcomed with open arms
Me and my wife to go Tenerife often and this headline is click bait. It's not like what there saying. It's not as cheap as they are making it out to be. They make it sound like Blackpool and it's not. There is no graffiti around. The island is very tidy and clean. Beaches are as clean as anywhere I have been. The locals a very welcoming and respectful. Tourists who I see walking around are respectful to the locals and the island. This story is just to fill time. Trust me, Tenerife is a very beautiful island with friendly people. Again, this stream is just click bait talking nonsense.
What do you expect from the pathetic sensationalist rag that is Good Morning Britain?
I mean yes, but the locals are a little exhausted because they cut off our water and not the hotels and we are half the island without water that's why we are scared of so much tourism, I'm not saying that everyone is bad, we say that please respect the island, its customs, etc.
@damonflatherty9819, coherent comment 👏
200 000 people demonstrated
Stephanie: "Respect the locals". Exactly. Imagine hundreds of thousands of people coming to England every year and not respecting our culture and traditions ... oh wait.
Local people are fed up with lager louts and privileged 304`s! Well done Spain!
It makes sense that you don't understand where people are coming from with the strikes. If journalists spent a bit of time talking with locals you would understand what's going on, but it is better to play the victim and be a populist as that's what really sells.
Things are getting a bit out of hand here. Canarian people are not against tourists at all. Canarian people are against the way that private companies, government, etc. are exploiting the islands for their own benefit without taking into consideration the importance of looking after it, looking after the residents that can’t even afford a place to live in… That’s the big problem. Do not let a small amount of people give the wrong idea of what is really happening. Tourist are more than welcomed but always keeping the islands and the people “well looked after”. Do not take it personal and do not let the media give you the wrong idea.
The phrase "tourists go home" if you put it on for a few seconds... the one about salaries being a shame is not even readable...

I think this program has focused on a simple idea of the real problem. We are not against british tourism. We are against the massive tourism because our island is suffering the consequences of massive population. We are a small island with limited natural resources. If we have a more balanced number of visitors, our islands will be better. In fact, we wont overuse our land, which is limited as well as our water sources. We are not against visitors, we are against the terrible massive tourism politics which damage our homeland and our natural heritage. Moreover, we are against our politicians who do not response to the situation of tourism. They dont build neccesary public facilities such as sewage treatment centres or a better public transport services. We are suffering the consequences of politics’ bad decision in relation to our region. We want to share our beautiful landscapes, lifestyle and culture, but not by killing our hometown resources because of the large number of people that come here every year. Please ITV, talk to locals and make sure about what is really happening. In addition, because of tourims, our region would be the richest in Spain, but thats not reality. The money that we earn from tourim goes to big companies and to corrupted politicians. Employees are not very well paid and people do not have so many opportunities to have homes because all the rental houses are prepared for tourist. So, another reason of our anger against massive tourism is because we dont have cheap homes for locals. We are paying really high prices for renting 1 room apartaments and our salary is not enough for living. Please talk to us, we will kindly talk to you and explain you why we are so angry with tourism.
Most of Tenerife is bushland not used by anyone. The locals own almost all the land and do not cultivate it.
i live in Tenerife, the locals problem is the recent massive rise in rents & bills which is happening all over, over tourism isn’t an issue at all unless you want it to be.

@@discograficas-chechubm3417 sbsolutely not deserved
As an english man i can understand why the locals have had enough, too much of anything becomes a problem,i respect what they are angry about,we have the same problem in england except they dont go home after a week, they stay here and destroy our country.
It's the same for them...one leaves after a week, but it's immediately replaced by another one fresh landed...so it never ends
FYI - countries can't just put down prices because they want to. The stupidest thing I've heard this week and it's Sunday.
If spain /canary islands think its the right choice tourist should boycott these travel destinations.theres loads of other places that are out there give those places the cash .20 years ago Tenerife was good now its average
We use go 3 time year in 5 star hotel every time .we worked it out we spend on 3 holidays a year 21 thousand. A year. We now book for Greece instead.
Same here
0:34 Got the fright of my life here.
Ladies, this is a perfect example of why you should grow old gracefully and naturally. It looks absolutely terrible to begin with and just gets horrific the older you get if you have these surgeries to make yourself look what you think is better.
Colonialist mind, you Brits still thinking you can do whatever you can everywhere.
Spain had a colonialist empire too.
@@grinningpinhead3961 what does it mean that with current situation in Canary Islands??
Tenerife could also do away cheep food outlets like McDonald's and such like, that should stop the Sun readers.
Who can blame them. Be we know how they feel. Least we pay unlike those coming here. They get free hotels.
Ironic considering brits go on about having amazing manners 🤣
What part of the island do you live?
@@martinking9945 i don’t live there. Im just referencing all the Brits I’ve encountered who “brag” about how polite their countrymen are
@@Latte-girly90witch is true we are it’s just Europe has always been jealous of us
Went too Tenerife 25 years ago didn’t like it woudnt go if I was paid too
Should tourists act respectfully wherever they vacation? Obviously. Do certain cities promote that kind of tourism tho? For sure. You don't see this behaviour from Brits or anyone in cultural destinations like Bilbao or Paris.
Because is not a island and the they have sourcess and the people in the people in the neighborhoods have houses to live in and food!
Going back to 1999!! It’s not new, it always been like this🤷♀️🤷♀️
Stephanie is spot on....
This is a pointless argument, it's the government who should be aortic infrastructure for locals
No, you shouldn't, if you want to boycott then you should boycott the Canary Islands as a whole, and Spain for what matters. This is how boycott works.I, personally, 100% agree with them and I apologize for the distress me and my family were, unknowingly, causing in the past years. To show my support I have already canceled my next holiday to Lazarote in September, Hope it helps them to find the peace they deserve.
Go to El Salvador instead
@apt155 thank for the advice but I'd rather stay in the UK. Not worth bringing money out of the country to trade with communities that hate us.
Surely Albania would be more welcoming... 😂
A boycott is what they want 😂
Duh 😂
Support locally produced veggies , frugt , meat, and items, and go to locally owned shops, that would make the diffrence imidiately!
Timeshare triggered the whole British tourism trade in The Canary Islands. Tenerife used to be dominated by German People . Then the British . I think you will find now a lot of the Hotels and Accommodation are owned by Russians. Most of the Restaurants in resorts are owned by Chinese people. It is sad for the local people it's their home land and should be respected. The people of the land should come first isn't that what most British people feel about the UK with mass immigration.
En España (Spain) estamos hartos del turismo inglés, porque salvo pocas excepciones es un turismo de borrachos, gente joven que viene a emborracharse : quedaros en vuestro país, eso no se puede llamar turismo
Are they crazy? They’ll lose tourism driven earnings
We'll be good
Escrito tumbada desde la cama con el menor esfuerzo de un par de movimientos de dedos.. 😂
@@noahcabrera9851 Time to fish again!
Half island without water and Hotels still have it... just that
So how's that the brits fault? Protest the hotels make some signs go outside the hotels and make yourselves heard. Go to local government building make yourselves heard.
Set up petitions to have desalination options implemented.
Or is it just easier to blame everyone but your politicians.
@@martinking9945 I agree with you about everything, but is not that easy. We already protest constanly and don't get any result. Our government wants to reinvest the tourism benefits in tourism projects, and that is ruining our islands and environment. Our politicians are only interested to take care of Hotels because is easy money, but the money is not destinated to improve our life, but for tourism projects. So the problem is not you, is not tourist, is our government's tourism regulation. To give you an idea Tenerife's surface is 2.034 km2 and the current population is around 1 million.
The British will do what they have always done........find somewhere else.....Nos vemos.

O apropiarse como Gibraltar
@@monicachinea6384your never own Gibraltar again 😂😂
We was very welcome in Corralejo
En Corralejo están igual de cabreados.
Nicer and cheaper places to go then there anyway haven’t been for three years they tar everyone with the same brush just because you are British
I live in Australia now but originated from the UK. I wouldn't consider myself a food connoisseur, but I like a wide variety of foods and have reasonably discerning taste. However, in a five day stay in Paris and being presented with luke-warm, unappetising and bland food, I spent the last couple days eating in an English style pub a few hundred yards from the Arc de Triomphe. Fortunately, living in Queensland, I don't have to go to the Canary Islands for sun and beaches.
Same here, don't have to travel long distance either...It's Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta or Playa del Carmen for me.
Go an extra mile and boycott the whole EU.
Please boycott us ! Here in Mallorca a lot English already
And you wonder why no one believes MSM.
im legit going to tenerife tomorrow-
erm
Just be respectful and you should be fine
@@elsebas3167 yeah 😭
Get your facts right.
Same with British people in Europe.
this is so embarrassing, please get your info correct, before speaking on tv. its about being sustainable , its against canary Islands government! WE ARE OVERCROWDED!
Put taxes on low cost flights.
Tenerife is a dump
The cost of living is increasing because of you tourists.
45years ago the south of Tenerife had nothing just banana plantation and some house's thanks to the British we have what we have but the problem is not the tourist and not the British it's the people who are leaving and working in the hospitality industry and there families there here all year round and there sons have there families there daughters have there families and that's just the start they're not for the island's they are for Spain the housing problem is there fault they won't leave the island's but the British doo so it's a case of build everything for the tourist trade and development thanks for it and Fu++off the people of the canaries are not too blame it the Spanish who made the canaries there home and that's why there is a housing problem
