I remember hearing Kruk give an interview about this at bat and he said this: "At first I thought 'all I want to do is make contact' but after the first pitch all I wanted was to live. And I lived. So I had a good at bat."
@MANCHESTER UNITED Well, if you are going to play that game. At least call it what it should be called. "KICKBALL."
@MANCHESTER UNITED HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....*takes 2 puffs of albuterol and continues* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Jon Lanier this kid literally goes to every mlb video and says this, wow lmao
@MANCHESTER UNITED maybe to you but not to everybody. Where I live at Baseball has been played a lot longer than soccer has. High Schools have Baseball programs and don't soccer. Now some towns may have small city soccer programs but they are not as big as Baseball. It is all up to the Individual anyway.
MANCHESTER UNITED F.C soccer fans are the most disrespectful people. Your not a fan of SPORTS. Most baseball players grew up playing multiple sports, including soccer. I did. And I loved ALL sports. But there’s always people like you that think your sport is the greatest. Dude! Sports are amazing period. These men throw a ball so hard it’s a blur at the plate. And not only that, there’s another man at the plate that can make contact with that ball with only milliseconds to decide if they’ll swing or not.
Hey, I didn't know Randy Johnson smiled!
Once. He's only smiled once.
+ronjon83 twice, when he was inducted into he hof
+Roler95 That was his 3rd. His 2nd was on November 4, 2001.
+howlincoyote2k1 true.
and his perfect game
I love Johnson's reaction as he walks off the mound looking at Kruk. It's all great fun.
Most entertaining plate appearance of all-time! Loved both of these guys.
Me too. They were both hard nosed players, But they had way different personalities. I remember seeing that live and watching it with my dad at home. We both laughed about it.
that was before All Star Games had so much pressure on them for each league to win. Now, it's back to being exhibitionist like it was then, so maybe we'll return to seeing moments like this Johnson/Kruk play!
And then in 1997 Big Unit did the same thing to Larry Walker in Cleveland. Larry then proceeded to calmly turn his helmet backwards and hit righty on the next pitch. I fell in the floor laughing.
Absolutely. Kruk does play by play for the Phillies. He is great too. Very colorful
Kruk made this at bat historic. It became a show in a show. Two legends
Randy Johnson is my favorite baseball player of all time and I love John Kruk for this. Hilarious great moment.
Kruk was an entertaining man.
@@SydneyBruno-qd9kt Still is - on the Phillies' TV broadcasts.
John Kruk was something we need in baseball today.... a big guy with a big personality
Just like the Babe
Vogelbach
@@Jonathan-gz1cp vogelfat can’t do anything but draw the occasional walk, we need to somehow get big sexy back to the big leagues
Watch the phillies broadcast if you miss the krukster lol. He’s an announcer
Yes, I'm sure so many players are rushing out to "have personality" in an age where everything they say and do gets scrutinized.
Just look at the faces in AL dugout. They were like now you know what we have to see, GOOD Luck son
When I lived in Minneapolis, I scored a ticket just off the bullpen in the Metrodome on a night Johnson was pitching, so I got to sit there as he warmed up pre-game. You cannot fully appreciate the man until you've heard the pure evil sound the ball made going through the air when he cranked up that fastball.
That gave me goosebumps
The only thing you can and should do to make your comment even better is add some descriptive language for the flying ball as you mentioned
Great 👍!!
I played HS BB and can still hear the 88 mph fastball sizzlin past me.
I cant imagine the sound of 102 and would fear hearing it.
I had the same experience with Aroldis Chapman while he was with the Reds and was later clocked at 105.
Kruk was hamming it up, it was the All-Star game and supposed to be fun. I gotta imagine prime Randy Johnson was a spooky at-bat for a lefty though.
I’m a left batter and I’d be scared shitless of his fastball
Yes. It was pretty obvious he was just gonna play the ham after that first pitch. Back when MLB was still a league of personalities and the all-star game was just a fun exhibition to see the leagues and stars together for one night. People sometimes forget that Kruk was a lifetime .300 hitter, with around an .840 ops or so. He could flat out rake, despite his size and body type.
Yeah, with Johnson's left-handed sidearm delivery and 6'10" height, his fastballs looked like they were coming in from first base. Left-handed hitters HATED that.
Remember seeing this live with my dad, and both of us laughing so hard we were crying. Glad this is on UA-cam nowadays. Long time I couldn't find it anywhere, and wanted to show people.
To be honest I wouldn't have even stepped into that batter's box. I would've turned around and walked back into the dugout after the first pitch lol
***** I'm okay with that lol
***** Nor yours.
***** Hey stupid....
no one will ever remember your name either , idiot.
Now do you understand- even with your low perspicacity? What a douchbag loser....
Get lost little-momma's-basement-dwelling gaybait.
Shouldn't you be picking up mom from work- you know, her street corner? Which one of her "customers" is daddy? Or do you even know?
Please don't argue. I really don't want to have to read this
10 extra points for the huge wad of chaw in Kruks left cheek! 😆🙌🏻
One of baseballs best moments ever.
A classic moment in baseball history. Even Frank Thomas was smiling!
Frank Thomas is having too much fun being Frank Thomas.
I like how these guys didn’t take it too seriously. I know it’s an all-star game but it was nice to see them have some fun with the situation.
John Kruk just didn’t want to be disintegrated like that bird Johnson hit
That happened 8 years after this
@@The_zenithgod and?
@@marknoble5495 so your comment makes no sense and it’s stupid
@@The_zenithgod of course it does. Do you think he wanted to get disintegrated like that bird? When it happened has no bearing on the statement. Get a life jerk.
He's like "NOPE NOPE NOPE"
It was the All Star Game, so he could have had even more fun with it, and batted right handed, similar to what Larry Walker did, by turning his helmet backwards, and stepping into the other box.
I don't blame him. Big Unit was 6'10 and he's throwing the ball a thousand mph.
He's halfway to the plate by the time he let's go of the ball.
"Obviously getting away from him" lol it was a completely measured, intimidation pitch by the Big Unit.
It was an All Star game that had no stakes in it so most likely not.
@@vilebasterd5729 Kruk's teammate Darren Daulton planned it. Kruk had mentioned how he was nervous about facing Johnson, so Daulton asked Johnson to do it as a joke.
John Kruk:"Get me outta here!!" One of the funniest moments in All-Star Game history.
"one of the funniest moments in all star history", that got me thinking, wonder how much we missed that was never filmed from the bygone era's
That first pitch was a total "Hit the Bull" moment.
Remember when all-star games were fun?
ever since they made it so that the winner gets homefield advantage the all star games have been shit
+Skamatik And this was 5 years before interleague play, when the only time AL ever faced NL was in the All Star Game and World Series (and preseason, I guess). And it had been that way for almost a full century! Interleague ruined everything!
Skamatik: I love the home field all-star reward. Makes the game mean something.
@@A.C31 I agree but it also took away from the fun factor. They don't goof off nearly as much. That was half the reason I watched the ASG back then.
@@johnalbertson79 NBA All-Star game fans are begging for the complete opposite because the players mess around TOO much. Ironic really
Chris Farley did an impression of John Kruk on SNL. They look so much alike!
battle of the mullets
Blonde mullet won.
1993, the height of the mullet in sports!
The Vegan Mojo better than a "baldy sour," dude.
Mitch Williams too. Same time
Johnson wins. Fatality
LOL @ the perfect second pitch w/ Kruk shaking his head.
Man, I remember this - it has to be one of the funniest at bats ever...
Randy”the big unit”Johnson has to have been the most intimidating Pitcher in MLB history!!! It’s basically a 7footer throwing 100+mph 😳
Imagine how much scarrier he would have been if they didn't lower the mound after the 68 season.
With THAT slider. Imagine if the Expos hadn't given up on him. A rotation with Johnson AND Pedro, we'd need a new record book.
@@philliprapisura6010 he didn’t like higher mounds. He always thought Phili would raise the mound a bit when he played there. Plus changing the height of the mound can damage arms. The university of Texas had this issue one year. A few pitchers were complaining of elbow and shoulder problems. They fixed the height and all was fine afterwards. But to us mere mortals it would definitely intimidate
People were plenty scared of Nolan Ryan. Norm Cash was so intimidated one game, during one of Nolan's no hitters, that he came to bat in the 9th with a table leg in his hands and not a bat. That's intimidated.
I LOVED watching Randy Johnson pitch. I watched as much of him as could be managed, which was so much less than if he played now. He was an unbelievable talent!
After the first pitch,I would probably be like, you know, I think my dugout called, later
stormtrooper86 I would've faked an injury "Oh! Twisted my ankle ducking outta the way!"
+MP Pk - Wuss
stormtrooper86 "Mom's calling me for dinner, gotta go."
"I was suddenly traded to an American League team!"
Greatest pitcher of all time... Complete domination against steriod hitters. 6 foot 10, throws 100 plus sidearm
Definitely one of them. He and Greg Maddux. Both great guys too.
Walter Johnson sez hi. Pedro too!
@@afridgetoofar1818Pedro doesn't hold a candle to Randy. Johnson is difficult because he was so long ago, but he's definitely in the GOAT conversation. Randy is the best to ever do it imo
This was during the most elite athletes and during the Major League All Star Game...John son has usually very strong control and I even saw his perfect game live (in person) in Atlanta. John Kruk is a very strong hitter, an All Star and also a very nice guy who battled and beat cancer.
aw johnsons smile was adorable haha never seen that before
Great profile pic lol love SOAD
Kruk is the color commentator for Phillies TV broadcasts. He's 60 years old now, but still very funny.
I agree he's my favorite of the current broadcasters
He's the most entertaining broadcaster in Philadelphia right now by far.
60 ain’t that old!
@@fandabidozi3191 Tell me about it ! I'm 73 lol
@@jjs2351 It’s not the years it’s the mileage. 😁
Just getting packed to head down to see the Phillies in London on Saturday!
After that first pitch, Kruk would have preferred to stand behind one of those nets the pitchers use for protection during batting practice. Or send in a pinch hitter! As a Phillies fan, I remember that game and John's at bat well.
Love this! Take me back to when baseball was great! ⚾️
I always loved watching power pitchers either on tv or at a ballpark. Gossage, Ryan, JR Richard, among the best of them from the 70’s and 80’s. And of course, Randy Johnson
One of the best moments ever. Always loved Randy. He was the absolute perfect guy to do that too. Left handed hitters then were truly terrified of facing him with that sidearm gas, and no one saw that coming with his stoic personality. Perfect.
After all these years still a very watchable baseball moment
Reminds me of the Randy Johnson vs Larry Walker ASG (1997) at bat where Larry flips his batting helmet around and stands on the other side of the plate.
So great to see this again!! I remember me and my dad howling with laughter at this!!
0:39 I love Sparky Andersons reaction like OK stand in there and just try not to get killed 😂
When you know who Randy Johnson is, you know that he threw the first pitch like that on purpose.
Of course he did.
Without question lol
100%
In the all star game I doubt it
@@alexrinaldi3257 I guess you don't know...if you didn't know now you know... 😂
Loved these two guys when I watched baseball. Got to see Kruk play a preseason game in Florida one year when I was a kid. Funny guy.
I was lucky enough to be at this game and remember this well.
Very funny episode for sure.
I HAVE BEEN A PHILLIES FAN FOR 62 YEARS AND I AM VERY HAPPY THAT JOHN KRUCK IS A PHILLIES BROADCASTER!
I love John KRUK he was one of the best hitters in baseball and for the Phillies. He is still in my ear and face doing the Phillies games. So I get to listen to him and he makes me laugh all the time. He is a great human being. Thanks John KRUK for loving Philly as much as we love you.
one of the single best moments in Baseball. I think that whenever Kruk makes a tv appearance they should show a portion of this clip, just because!!!
You know it's special, when Sparky Anderson laughs in the Dug Out.....That's some never before seen footage right there.
I’ve seen that footage many times.
Kruk wasn’t a scrub either. 300 career hitter, but no one wanted any part of Randy Johnson. People took the All Star game seriously back then too.
Miss seeing RJ pitch even if he hurt the Brewers. Legend
Same against Cardinals. Easy to appreciate a great player from the other team. Went out to Arizona for spring training one year and Randy was pitching the day I was there. Was nice to concentrate on him, rather than worry about my team winning.
@@lobitome the cards.....my nemesis.
Are we going to have a log jam at in the standings this year with all 5 teams or are the pirates and reds going to fall apart in july as usual?
Seen RJ pitch once and that whipping motion he made while throwing a fastball along with that stride of his was amazing.
He looks like he would be a big jerk in life but is actually a wonderful person.
Dont know how you feel about Albert Pujols but he is also an ex-brewer killer but a great person too.
I Wish your Cards luck except for when they play Milwaukee.
Peace brother.
Lol oh man! John Kruk made that video entertaining! That was so funny when he would swing and spin around. I don't blame him after the ball being thrown over his head.
"Throw one at the mascot...I wouldn't dig in as much if I were you. Next one could be at your head. I don't know where it's gonna go, I swear to God."
lol classic
When Randy Johnson went wild, that was scary AF. I wouldn’t want to be up there either. When I was in little league and club ball, we had a fast pitcher and we all feared him. He was pretty accurate, but, sometimes he went wild too and he got me right in the middle of the back.
“Throw it at the Bull”
He was aiming for the Bull!
XD
Krukky is a good dude. Took all that in stride w a smile.
I sat in front of Randy Johnson one day at my grandparents church. When it was time to all get up and greet each other I got to say hello, which was really cool. Just his size and look alone is intimidating
This was Johnson at the exact time he was developing his control. He always struck out a lot of batters, but was still wild as he led MLB in hit batters during that season (‘93) as well as the previous season. But ‘93 was the first time in four years Johnson didn’t lead MLB in BB, as he only walked 99 batters that season.
Kruker made Randy smile!
Can hear boys of summer starting at the end
I loved watching John Kruk play
I love how the catcher empathizes with the hitter and pats em on the head.
I remember watching that happen. Randy got to a lot of guys.
Imagine being a lefty vs Randy. Terrifying.
Anybody notice that that first pitch actually goes into the stands? I don't know how, but it does. Some fans lucked out they didn't receive the same fate as that pigeon
I showed my dad this vide and he rememberd and he laughed so hard
Gotta love the Krucker... That game was awesome.
That catcher is crazy. You want me to catch what?No thanks son.
If there's been a better moment in the history of baseball, I'm hard pressed to think of it. HAHAHAHA
The poor pigeon!!
After so many years of watching this clip, I don't think I had ever noticed the guy in the background. That's probably what Randy was throwing at.
Yes!!! Good eye!
I remember watching that with my dad. He cracked up. I'll never forget it.
By cracked up, do you mean he had to be committed to a home? My condolences on your loss.
I miss this era of baseball so much
When baseball players had personality
Have you watched a baseball game in the past 5 years? There's personality more than ever as the "unwritten rules" aren't as strictly enforced anymore.
There’s plenty of personality now though...
I wonder which baseball players prep? Been following you for a while, CP!
Tell me you don’t watch baseball without telling me you don’t watch baseball
Nobody has personality these days. Everyone is cringe.
The funniest part of his at bat was when he switched boxes and flipped his helmet backwards
Wrong guy haha. That was Larry Walker.
I pity anyone who never got to witness Randy pitch.
I was personally very glad to have him on my home state's team in 2001! :D
One of the greatest moments in baseball history
I always thought that Randy Johnson was obviously taking a page out of Bull Durham. And it worked just as well as in the movie - better in fact.
Its funny how back in the day 102 was absolutely insane and now there are people throwing 106
It’s not
Sadly, They don't make 'em like Kruky anymore. Baseball misses guys like that.
I wish this didnt cut out the part where john kruck stepped into the other batters box with his helmet on backwards. Lol.
That wasn't Kruck, that was Larry Walker. Lefties often took a night off when Johnson pitched.
Honestly don’t know how anyone can comfortably stand at the plate in the sport of baseball.
A 6'11" guy throwing almost 100 MPH near my head? I don't blame John Kruk a bit.
was Randy really 6'11"? Holy Sh*t!
@@red5llaw Sure is!
Almost a hundred? Yeah his slider was prob 90-95mph but that fastball...phewwwwww
Happy 60th Kruker!!!
Remember watching that game!
Randy knew what he was doing to the background guy to wake him up...done on purpose
The scariest yet happiest strikeout ever💀
The one pitcher a lot of major league hitters admit they were terrified to face was Goose Gossage. He had herky jerky head movement, his throwing motion was best described as flailing and he threw 100 mph. The batters could never figure out what was coming and were looking to bail first instead of swinging.
At first, I thought they were calling him “The big eunuch!”
RandyJohnson is the greatest pitcher in history. Pedro Martinez in second.
That was awesome to watch live
looked like me in my little league days hahah so great
Kruk was a warrior . He was just playing.
That was definitely no mistake by Johnson. Cruk had made comments before the game about being anxious to go up against somebody like the Big Unit. Johnson definitely heard those comments decided to have some fun.
I think I would rather jog through rush hour traffic than hit against randy Johnson. Downright scary
I've always wanted to bat against him just to see what it's like and just hoping I can get my bat to accidentally make contact with one of his pitches
rush hour traffic going 15 mph
I remember the interview with Kruk's after he had been operated for cancer in his testies. When a reporter ask him how he felt he yelled " How do you think I feel, they cut off my Nut." The room fell on the floor !
Tim McCarver in the booth… you are not missed.
I don't miss Tim either. John Smoltz seems to be killing it now in the booth. Joe Buck you suck.
McCarver is doing color commentary for the Cardinals tv broadcasts on FoxSports Midwest. He is the worst.
mr. microanalisis, I saw Yogi and Joe G. on his show, once, they kept him laughing the whole time, he never learned a thing!!!! common Tim baseball is supposed to be fun! he seems excited here, having fun..you know..baseball?...fun? what is it with people who claim announcers are terrible, but cannot provide any actual fact as to why.
you obviously didn't read my post. Joe G. and Bob Uker and Dizzy Dean made baseball fun... these guys make it sound like big business, OH Waite it is big business!
I love the boys in the A.L. dugout laughing..."We have to see this ALL season."
That's too funny.. love how kruk took a bow at the end
Thats like an elite mullet duel.
Randy is the Larry Bird of baseball. Unreal! So good.
Paul Molitor, Sparky Anderson, Jim Palmer, and the big hurt Frank Thomas all sitting in a row at 0:39... 4 HOF players/manager Sweet.
Are you sure? Molitor never played for the Tigers and that guy looks younger than Paul was in the mid 90's.
Ha look to the far left of Sparky, Paul is in the Blue Jay uniform..

Thank for posting that timeline NewWaveFan1. I enjoyed seeing Sparky Anderson in the dugout at the 0:39 mark. Life long Tiger fan since 1987.
The Big Unit cracked a smile, LOL!
