I was just out there snorkeling this morning. Visibility was great and I was able to see a white tip reef shark for the first time. Great review on this mask. I considered one when I first got into diving because I like the hands free aspect of it. However, I used the GoPro head strap on a dive which puts the camera in a similar location and one reason why I wouldn't use it for filming scuba diving is because of the exhaust bubbles constantly getting in the shot. Great concept, yes. I think Octomask was smart by designing a low volume mask for free divers because this is where it shines. It gives the viewer a first person view of what the diver sees. Just my 2 cents on the mask. Cheers
Nice, I can tell it can be & feel at ease when filming from your head point of view. I think this mask for filming can contribute to relaxation when diving. No more worrying about what to film when diving. Filming can get in the way of things when trying to enjoy your experience.
Was interested in the Octomask as well, but I like the footage better from a pole. The Octomask looks like a well made mask though.. Great job on the review!
really glad you made this video, i have been wanting to see how the octomask is. i am a big fan of scubapro & i was thinking i would make something myself for one of my tru fit's. now you have me thinking, decisions decisions.
area51r if your gonna get the freediver version, I would see if you can try the fit of the mask first before you buy - to be honest the freediver version doesnt fit me well around the nose. The Frameless version has a better bit.
I would love to see this done with one of the newer GoPros with Hypersmooth. My Hero 9 with Hypersmooth 3.0 starts to rival lower end gimbals. Then I think that footage would look significantly less jittery from the first person view.

Quite brave to attach weight directly to such a central piece of kit! I find the video it produces too jittery compared to the pole mounted camera you have become a pro at using. But I guess the hands free element is a big plus.
I'm gonna buy for my scuba diving videos and Scuba diving to gonna be my new hobby in next year, in summer of 2023 I'm gonna take scuba diving class open water dive courses and I'm gonna do it when I'm at open water test.
Personally I do not use filters - you can correct the image color in post production with no problem! Tutorials on how to color correct can be found on my channel. Using filters can be ok, assuming your diving at a relatively fixed depth... however if your depth changes during the dive you video will be too red near the surface, perfect at 8m-16m and become dark below 20m.

Thomas Pickering on the surface.... 4 minutues to 4:30 , with little of no training. Can go over 5 minutes If I do some practice. As for underwater... the longest I think was around 3 minutes, to 20 or 25 meters. But in general if say my dives around like 1:20- 1:30 .... with the occasional 2 minute dive if i have good buddy and quite relaxed and feeling confident.

Quentin Bahr Im using the Aqualing Sphera mask for 90% of my dives. The mask in this video should be viewed more as a tool for gopro videos. I would wear if it I wanted to make video in the 1st person. Fins.... cressi gara professional are a decent pair of fins for starting out.
+samoppi the gopro setting is 1440p 48fps protune on, cam raw. The vegas export..... sorry, not sure, im not at my vegas pc right now, but its nothing fancy, just standard kinda MPEG export.
Dive mask question; I have a very difficult time finding a mask that fits with any leaks. I mainly get leaks right under my right nostril or against my temples due to my bonny face. I've tried multiple masks but the only one that seems to fit me is the big thick high volume masks by aqualung. How do you think these masks would fit someone like myself? If i high volume mask is the one that fits - use it. While low volume give best performance - if its leaking that point is null and void. I think high volume can give "good enough" performance for general freediving up to about 20m, 25m at a push... beyond that things get quite tight underwater in terms of pressure so u dont want to wasting too much air on equalization. Some modern scuba style masks dont seem overly high volume anyway - nothing like those really oldskool scuba masks - so i think u will be fine. My gf using a scuba mask for freediving because she wears glasses and needed customs lenes - she does fine following me - though i doubt she will set a natioanl record in the mask, she is doing just fine.

I think Mares Viper is a freediving mask. I tried the Salvimar Noah in the pool and seals well and is very comfortable. Look it up. In Europe it costs a lot less than in the USA.
+FreeDivingAdventures I should wear gloves, but I generally dont when I am in my tropical dive gear. If you look at some of my cold water videos, I am always wearing gloves.
Nice review. I just think that mask mounted cameras are not practical because we don't typically keep our eyes and head pointed at one area long enough to get good video. You end up with micro-second long views and a bunch of uselessly short video clips.
The first thing that came to mind when I watch this, was the lack of life on the reef, and the lack of colors on the corals. Was this just a bad day or are Guam getting polluted like the rest of the world.?

+Ben The amount of air inside of the mask when your wearing it. The more air inside the mask, the more it is squashed onto your face as you dive down and the water pressure increases.
+Freediver HD So the freediver mask has less air in it so there is not so much pressssure on your face? And consequently you can go deeper with it than with the scuba mask?
It's a ittle bit more complicated and there is some maths envolved. Air at 10 meters down occupies half as much volume as it did at 0meters, so the mask is sucked hard on to your face , it kinda wants to suck the eyes out of your head. To counter that the freediver must exhale air from his lungs through the nose to kinda inflate the mask, to counter the pressure.We call this equalizing the mask. The more air you have to exhale into your mask to equalize it, the more air you are wasting. So freedivers want a mask with a minimum internal volume so they dont have to exhale as much air into the mask to equalize it.
As you need to compensate the air in your ears, you also need to compensate the air in the mask with breathing out little air thru nose. You need less air to compensate the freediver mask, than the scuba mask = the scuba is bigger and you need to breath out more air - and this is not a good think when you freedive to depth. At greater depths you have air only for compensating ears and not the mask. Thats why pro no limit freedivers uses only little swimming "eye masks" and a nose clip. Breathing out to the mask is waste of air. (sorry for bad english) :)
The big problem here is obvious. You cannot buy a mask and just hope it is airtight on your particular face.. This equals instant no thanks. All for the sake of a GoPro mount?Why not have a small mount that fits on your particular mask, this makes way more sense. i think it's dangerous depending where you dive. for example in a cave if you touch the cave and it rips the mask off your face could cause some serious problems. better head strap under the hood, works perfect.

Hmmm seems too jittery. Handheld footage looks more steady and fluid. Maybe better for continuous still shots rather than video.

Ive never used those brands/masks, so sorry cant answer that.

If you have a small face this mask will not work because you can’t get it to seal

Since 2015 I have been using Hero 4 Silver. There is some shots from a hero 3 in this video because I borrowed somebodies gopro for this video.

***** I have the headstrap, but haven't had a good experience with it. Camera often shifted around during the dive, making a lot of the video useless.
