    I used Speedpaint since 1.0 and I really like them. I tend to use a wet pallet with only a damp sponge as the nature of the paint tends to make them dry out a little too fast for me. If you just do a simple white base coat it's really easy to fix mistakes, and sense I am a rookie painter this helps out a lot.

      Now the weather is a lot cooler here in the U.K. the drying time doesn’t seem to be as quick - a few drops of medium can also help with working time

    I love the 1.0 range, but the reactivation is a problem I didnt want - saying a car isnt a boat, is very different to the reactivation problem.
    Contrast from GW was advertised as a 1 coat solution - and prior to speedpaint 1.0 there hasnt been a reactivation issue (that I'm aware of) with any miniature paint before it, saying a paint 'must be used as advertised' is a strange stance to take.
    I'm not saying Army Painter 'had' to disclose this as an issue, but I'm very happy the reviewers out there made a big deal about it so people knew what they were buying.
    I still bought 1.0 and have since bought all of the 2.0 range (excluding most of the colours that already existed in 1.0) I love the range, but I agree the reactivation problem 'is' a problem - I just work around it with varnish.

    • @IJJusion
      @IJJusion Рік тому

      I'll also add - 1.0 range is my favorite if the reactivation issue didnt exist, it has a much more matt finish and stronger coverage I find which dries smoother.
      2.0 I find is 'slightly' weaker coverage and dries more satin, but without the reactivation issue, i still find i prefer it.

    A fair review of a good product. I enjoyed the first version of speedpaint and didn’t have many complaints with it overall. The biggest challenge was with the cleanup if you’d gone over a spot and had to paint white back over before applying another speedpaint. In those instances I would sometimes get a bleed effect, such as over red speedpaint, the white becoming pink.
    However, it wasn’t an issue I felt worth all the ire it seemed to garner, and happily bought the 2.0 mega set to add to my toolkit. I almost never use the speedpaints exclusively but combine them with regular paints and washes. As an additional tool I think they’re a great addition and help me get results I’m happy with faster than I could before.

      I think a lot of things were blown out of proportion for the sake of selling drama - still to this day I’m using speedpaints and I’ve not had a problem with any of them, I do exactly the same thing and use them in combination with citadel and ProAcryl and it all works very well together

    I just tried out the speed paints this past week and I missed so many of these little details! The small description on the bottle would have been really helpful as well as actually reading more of the pamphlet it came with haha. If only I had this video a week earlier!
    I came into it it thinking they would be a miracle paint that would make amazing minis, and they are really good, but in the end they are to help you speed up certain processes and the quality will only go so far alone. I still enjoyed using them and plan to try them out more.

    This an ace review and some brilliant comments. I was an original adoptee of the v1.0 Speedpaints and I thought they were ace. However I struggled to apply decals over them and started having problems brush painting varnishes on them etc. So I sold up and re-invested in the 'Most Wanted' v2.0 paints. LOVE THEM. They are such an improvement and the new colours look fantastic. They initially have a touch of reactivation like the first paints so glaze blending works really nicely, but then once they have fully cured additional highlights stay bright and brush on varnishes now work. A first class AP product. :)

    Just because they *intended* it to be a one-coat and done solution, doesn't make that a positive trait. If your paint comes with the restriction that you can't touch other paint to it or layer or highlight or do anything other than brush one coat on, you have designed a *bad paint*. Reactivation wasn't a feature, it was a bug, and 2.0 is an improvement.

    • @cat_or_rabbit

      Doesn’t every paint come with some form of restriction?

    • @Mekhami
      @Mekhami Рік тому +2

      @@cat_or_rabbit in some ways, if you take that question to it's extreme. You can't brush isopropyl alcohol on unvarnished acrylic, sure. But barring actively destructive intentions, you can do pretty much whatever you want with acrylic paints once they are dry.
      The difference is what market or niche you're addressing; wargaming and miniature painting has a wide range of established techniques, and speed paint 1.0 broke the rules of that niche. It added almost nothing in the way of new techniques. Certainly nothing that contrast paint can't do. Which would have been fine if they hadn't also *removed* a bunch of options and techniques.

    • @Mekhami
      @Mekhami Рік тому +2

      and don't mistake me; I love AP SpeedPaint and I have the Mega set of the 2.0 and quite a few of the 1.0 as well. They have a ton of great uses, I love the pigments, etc. I'm not trying to say "AP SP 1.0 was bad", I'm saying it had a critical flaw, one that got addressed, and I'm very happy with the new stuff. I use it a lot as a sort of ink through the airbrush, pushing vibrancy and saturating. I also use it with a brush if i'm speedpainting something i don't care to get too crazy with.
      But yeah. Just because the intention was a one-coat solution doesn't make it a good tool for the market they are trying to address. I'm super glad they did address the problem, cause the 2.0 have a permanent place on my paint rack.

    • @cat_or_rabbit
      @cat_or_rabbit  Рік тому

      @@Mekhami so I don’t believe there is a perfect paint, every paint is the worst and also the best it just depends on what application you prefer - Citadel straight away asks you to add water to thin your paints to obtain a smooth finish - it’s minor but it’s still an additional step, if Speedpaint isn’t the system for you there will just be others that are, from talking to AP it was suppose to be an enclosed system - granted I don’t think they anticipated the issue - but then again isn’t that an utility issue through misuse?

    • @Mekhami
      @Mekhami Рік тому +2

      @@cat_or_rabbit i don't think it's fair to say "the way all other paints in this hobby work" is "misuse". the problem here is a mismatch of expectations. People expected a contrast-like paint that works with their normal tools and their normal techniques, and speedpaint 1.0 released with a totally different set of expectations for how people would use them. And, to be completely frank, army painter got it wrong. you can't just change the way the hobby works because your paint acts a certain way. you have to conform to the hobby to some degree. you can elevate, you can make minor changes, you can add new tools, but you can't just upend the process and call it a feature.

    I like this video learned a few new things and I like to use army painter 2.0 speed paints 3 different ways. Number 1 thin coats like a regular paint usually gets good color results not much in the way contrast. Number 2 using it like suggested I find it kinda hard to control where the speed paint goes but I still like using it this way. Number 3 mixing it with regular acrylics to shade the paint in different ways I've got great results so far.

    I like both, Speedpaint and Speedpaint 2.0 I had no issues with the 1.0, it did reactivate if you added certain paints on top, but I could use that to my advantage to blend. Also if I wanted to layer other paints I would just put a varnish down. They did fix the reactivation issue in 2.0 but it does seem a tad bit thicker, and I have gotten a little cracking at times, not fully sure of cause I'd have to experiment a little to see, where 1.0 seems a little smoother in application, but I can layer just fine on the 2.0 with no varnish, and that's not having waited the two hours as ArmyPainter suggests, I believe I have started after 20 min and been fine. Both work great and each has its pros and cons. For me I use 1.0 or 2.0 depending on my painting objective and sometimes I even switch between them on the same project.

    • @cat_or_rabbit
      @cat_or_rabbit  Рік тому

      Thats a very organised method - I’ve heard a few people have experienced cracking with 2.0 - I’ve been using it a fair bit and aside from some blotchy drying - no problems my end still - j would probably put it down to the paint itself being either inconsistent in some batches or extremely picky with its environment, although untill I experience it myself it’s difficult to comment on why I think this happens.

      Cracking is because of your basecoat brand, there is many videos about this, the TLDR is if you use stuff like Vallejo primers then there is zero issues but if you use stuff that has a glossier surface cracking can occur if the humidity and room temperature isn't quite right so I guess a Matt varnish is still needed for some people

    I feel like the 2.0 paints are thicker than the 1.0, though maybe it's just the colours I've used so far. They definitely dry faster, which gives them less time to run down into the crevices, which I think results in a bit more tide marks. On the other hand, when I make a mistake I can quickly wash it away with water without affecting the dry layers underneath, which couldn't be done with 1.0.

    • @cat_or_rabbit
      @cat_or_rabbit  Рік тому

      2,0 does dry faster as they’ve used a different resin in the mixture - here in the U.K. it’s been fairly warm so my paints have been drying at super speed, overall I think 2.0 is a good step up and where they should of been from the word go

    In this hobby, a paint that reactivates is bad design, even if it's intentional design. Users are right to complain about it, even if their experience counts as misuse, even if there are ways to make the color bleed work in their advantage. Look at Apple's Magic Mouse: they intentionally put the charge port under the mouse, but that means that the mouse can't even be used as a mouse while it's charging. Why does it have to be that way? It doesn't. Users complain about it and Apple doesn't listen. It's really commendable that Army Painter listened, owned up to the problem, and fixed it as fast as they did, their product is better for it and customers love it.

It had nothing to do with using it the wrong way or not understanding it was a one-coat solution. Speed Paint 1.0 and 2.0 are and were amazing. When I told @TheArmyPainter that the reviewers they sent to test them would be way too aggressive and try to do shortcuts to provide a video I was completely right. A lot of these "Professional" youtube reviewers did not read the instructions or request usage instructions when supplied for reviews. They just did what ever they did, and never took a good day to let it work. I was super disappointed in the reviewers that didn't allow proper drying, palette usage testing, airbrushing blends, and medium spreading. They just hairdryer cheated and tried painting over a warm/hot model which isn't what the paint is meant for. I did 4500 points worth of sisters of battle models over a weekend and never had a single issue with either version . So, it's really just User error when it comes to the paint. I had to unsubscribe from a lot of click-bait paint tubers. I think they are good and they have some great uses especially with a current paint range

    It was pretty entertaining seeing GW shills that are incapable of research struggle to use these paints appropriately, I just wish their audience wasn’t so badly influenced by shit opinions

      I think a lot of people were looking for a problem through usage, I still 6 months down the line haven’t had a problem with 2.0 and some of them have become my go to paints. I think sometimes people enjoy seeing things fail (not that they did!) for no other reason than to be able to say ‘I told you so’

    lemme guess, youve got it for free and a spreadsheet what to say. Its maybe only me, but i want my paints to work. Not to crack the surface of my 15 bucks airbrush premium primer from PA. Thats not individual. The paint is not well engineered. Its broken. I also would say this if army painter sent me the complete box like they did for you.

      Nope guessed wrong , I use these along with citadel and I haven’t had a problem with them, this is the only time I’ve worked with army painter, I’m under no obligation to say anything nice about them, but they work for me and I like them. Sorry to hear you’re not having a good time with them

    You can canl this a review if you want. I call it a sellout, your spending most of the video defending AP and their poor products. Reactivation was never a feature, what you are refearing to is damage control that happened when they realized people where upset. 2.0 dried out to quickly and cracks, AP is just inferier im afraid. But hey good on you for getting some free stuff.

      Well I am sorry you think that way, I had a great time with it and have been using it a lot, your right reactivation wasn’t a feature it was a situation discovered through misuse as I state in the video só o do agree with you there, as for the cracking I haven’t experienced this myself but I know others did - not sure wether this was ever addressed
