Is there any way to just purchase all 3 books as a complete collection matt!
Say a lump sum of £180 give or take for Uk Purchase?
Out of curiosity is Dr Tobias books in a glossary format or more so a specialised Encyclopaedia of sorts?
Can you buy them outside the UK, and can they ship them to South America (Argentina)?
Dr. Capwell should sell a digital version of these
@@rubengalvan1031 I have the first two and I had them both shipped to the USA. Expensive, but no problems and totally worth it. Also the same with my 3rd book pre-order.
Just a note: I purchased the second book (if memory serves) from the Wallace Collection online store, so there's another source if they're still available through them.
I got to visit the Wallace Collection, largely inspired by your videos. Dr Capwell was there, and graciously showed me some of his favorite parts of the collection. You both have encouraged me to embrace my love for history. Thanks a million!!
Wonderful!
He's very personable and shares his love of armour and Medieval history.
Toby is such a down to earth person. He is so intelligent and well spoken, but also very relatable. He is an awesome writer and researcher as well. Plus he actually wears armour!
So true! He's always gracious and willing to share what he knows...which is a lot!
I negotiated with several publishers.
Dr Toby: there will be 1800 images
Publisher: how about 100?
Dr Toby's hand tightens on his pollaxe: THIS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE.
I remember all those years ago, the series you made with Dr. Capwell at the Wallace Collection was what introduced me to your channel. I love these collaborations.
Same here. Many thanks
Dr Capwell is always great to hear from, and so are you Matt! Both of you are supremely knowledgeable about one of my favourite topics. Love the videos with Dr Capwell, who is as close as one could get to being a hero for me in the European historical space as an American who is interested in European history, and this channel always helps me learn more, not just from Dr Capwell but from yourself as well.
German person here. For US citizens may be unbelieveable is the situation in my homeregion. Why? May be 30 km/ 20 miles away was fortified border between Roman Empire and ,Germania Magna', you can still see some relicts of border wall. May be 15 km/ 10 miles away are relicts of celtic oppidum ,Heidengraben', ramparts, still an obstacle for tanks. Relicts of lots of medieval castles, some build on locations at clifflike northern end of ,Swabian Alb' plateau, ruins of two Renaissance fortresses, relicts of town fortifications, from former ,Imperial Town' to small ,rural town'. Lots of old civilian ,timberwood' buildings, churches , but also relicts of ,Natter' rocket plane starting plattforms, relicts of a ,glider lift' from the time of a Charlie Chaplin lookalike, all inside a circle of 60km/ 40 miles diameter.
@@brittakriep2938,
What is amazing to me is how successful the Swabian Hohenstaufen dynasty was in all of Southern Italy, but in Sicily especially; what an amazing example of successful coexistence between cultures.
@@fuferito : Being a ,proud swabian', Britta is my girlfriend, i am rather happy, that i can see Mount Hohenstaufen from my homevillage.
Although I will certainly be trying to get a physical copy when I can, I hope Toby will be releasing a digital copy someday. More portable, easier to access, and as silly as it sounds, use. There are some use issues for those of us with physical ailments, just easier to read an iPad than a whopping great book. Also don't need to worry about spilling tea on it, or it being chewed on by a ferocious parrot, as much.
Agreed, I would pay full price for a digital copy.
Always a pleasure to see you talk with Dr. Capwell
I love the point both Dr. Capwell and Mr. Easton make about the virtue of armor users contributing to the history discipline. It reminds me of the origins of historical study of warfare, where originally historians didn't see it as their job to study warfare as a discipline, and instead left it to the officer class within militaries because it was thought that only a military expert could understand the accounts of ancient warfare. But military people didn't necessarily appreciate the nature of historical sources, unreliability and contextual reading that is so important in academic history departments. It was only when there was a marriage of academic historians and contemporary military experts that we saw the rise of warfare as a rigorous area of research.
So much good content lately. Matt is killing it. Dr. Capwell too.
When these two get together I know it’s unrivaled knowledge flowing like a waterfall.
My grandfather took me to the Wallace Collection, every year when I was a kid. Amazing.
It's so interesting that there are no known verifiable examples of English-made armor from this period. Is there any potential reason for this? Was there a habit or policy of recycling steel in England that would have consumed domestically produced (and thus less expensive) armor at higher rates than imported armor? This seems like an interesting question in itself!
Well this statement requires quite a bit of unpacking - I might make a video about it myself :-)
@@scholagladiatoria I fully support this!
Need to know this myself
I think a possible variable is that was more rare and not "mass produced" and exported because it was designed primarily for foot combat instead of mounted, which was quite unique to England. So I suppose there was not the supply and demand which means less made and less to survive.
@@sirwi11iam Indeed, that sounds like a very plausible contributing factor. If it was an order of magnitude less common at the time we'd certainly see far fewer surviving examples. But the fact that they are so incredibly rare makes me wonder.
I wonder if any culturally specific habits contribute to it as well E.g. were people buried in armor in England in those days? Did they simply not value domestically made armor or was it considered so superior that it was constantly remanufactured and reused in bits and pieces?
I don't know if any of that is true but I think it would be quite interesting to understand where it all went.
Mr. Capwell, a phd is only the start of a career. i hope you release a digital version of the books at some point, because i move a lot and i can't carry a ton of books, but either way once i find a place to settle i'll surely get the real deal ;)
Mr: Easton, i'm so glad lockdown is over and you are giving us so much good content, along with the other people in the community. also congrats for the deal with windlass, the swords look amazing! i hope they sell a lot!
Concur on the e-copy... I downsized into retirement, and only have about 30 feet of shelf space, mostly stuff I still use for "work". I would hate for this stuff to end up boxed in the attic, or worse, end up in a thrift shop when I move on. (Willing to pay a good chunk for them too--)
Honestly, I'd pay the full price for a digital copy. Sure, it's not the same as the physical thing, but the information contained within is the really important part.
@@nutyyyy never said anything about price ;)
Let’s be honest without these interviews I wouldn’t now own the books
I love these chats as I feel like I'm attending a conversation between friends about a mutual enthusiasm... And I strongly recommend buying Toby's books ASAP. I saw someone trying to peddle Volume 1 the other day for $750, and they're not even out of print - yet! I think the seller took down their listing, but I think that's an indicator of what we're in for the second they are actually out of print...
Ordered all 3. I lived in North Yorkshire from 2002-2006 and was a member of the Leeds Armory. They used to give monthly weekend classes and offered access to their back room books and equipment. Perhaps I meet Dr Capwell then.
I've always had the highest respect for Dr. Capwell, but that story how he pushed trough on this project despite all those setbacks puts that on an entirely new level. Thanks for the great interview to you two.
This gentlemen is what peak content looks like!
I am so happy for Professor Capwell for getting his works finished and published like for real 👍👍👍👍👍👍 I love the passion he has for what he does and this project
So...just listening to the first few minutes of the video made me buy the vol 1 & 2 out of pure terror of not being able to find them in the future...can't wait to get them now 😀
Outstanding. Eye-watering shipping to Australia. Ordered anyway 👍🏻
You can really tell that Tobias has a deep love for the subject three more books sold !
During the runtime of this video, I ordered all 3 of the books (one every ten minutes or so). I never knew you were such an effective booksalesman Matt. Of all your videos, I enjoy the ones with Dr. Capwell the most. On a holiday (I'm Dutch), I visited the Wallace Collection once and it has become something of a holy trinity to me (in no particular order): Wallace, Capwell, Easton.
I'd literally just opened Armour of the English Knight 1450-1500 to continue reading when this notification popped up!
I have both the other books on order
Dr T, the man with the legendary collection.
I think he even owns and wears such things too.
2 years ago i was walking across northern Spain and there where a lot of knightly effigies, a lot Italianate but most where different from the main styles i knew.
I hope there is more discussion of French and Spanish armor, these were powerful Christian European Kingdoms there, and therefore beautiful and expensive armor being worn there.
@nicholasricardo8443 France was also the most populace Kingdom of the period, even with somewhat smaller borders than modern France. It's fascinating to me looking at French effigies of the early 15th century and seeing the subtle differences. From 1400-1420 (I only use this distinction because that's the period I looked at). You see the majority of effigies without any helmets. One or two examples towards the end of the period had helmets depicted separately. And there were small number that did have helmets on their heads. So it's interesting to contrast artistic styles of the period in different locations. I did see one or two very interesting harnesses that seemed to differ from a lot of the others. So I think it's definitely a subject that a lot could be written about.
Visited the wallace collection a few days ago and tried to find Dr Capwell with no luck lol. Amazing museum!
I have truly fallen in to rabbit hole now, with armour and armouring.
I can't believe I missed this video when it was first posted, this is fascinating and I need these books
This is a brilliant interview Matt. One, thank you so much organising and going to the lengths to record and share these wonderful interviews with Dr Toby. And second, this interview was incredibly informative for our current project building a Italian made harness for the Western market. Can't wait to get a copy of this book!
Thanks for the link, just purchased all three from Olympia auctions!
Matt is a great interviewer love how Matt allows Dr. Capwell tell his story
Tobias is the man, hope he puts out as much material as he can & keep finding new ways to publish work.
You gents did a great talk here, hoping for more.
Absolutely great collaboration!! I've just ordered book No. 1!! Thank you both!!
I have book one and cherish it. I just wish I could afford 2 & 3 right now. Have to hope there are some left when I can pick them up. I highly recommend them to anyone interested in armor, just don't take the last one I want that one :)
That "imagination will get you anywhere" eye roll lol, I feel it!
Still keeping my gothic kit though.
Effigy at 5.18 bears a striking resemblance to our very own Matt himself!
Wow. I could talk to that man for hours.
Dr. Capwell makes the subject matter interesting.
I wish he and Matt would talk about Iberian armour and weapons sometime.
Qvc's content has really improved there's no need to hard sell when the enthusiasm is so genuine.
This is really great, love these informative conversation episodes you are doing now. This particular episode was interesting not only regarding English armour, but also by providing insight into what a career as a historian involves. I hope you keep doing stuff like this.
Listened twice and bought Book 1
UPDATE: ORDERED BOOK ON 22ND OCT 2022, RECIEVED EMAIL ON 24TH OCT FROM Enquiries, Thomas Del Mar SAYING I'M NOT GETTING IT ANYTIME SOON. ASKED FOR UPDATE AS I AM AWAY - NO REPLY. = POOR SERVICE. YOU NEED TO GIVE PEOPLE AN ESTIMATE OF WHEN THEY WILL BE RECIEVING THEIR BOOKS - WHY PUBLICISE THESE BOOKS IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO DISPATCH THEM = POOR ALL ROUND. PLEASE COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR BUYERS!
I would love a similar work on iberian armour (& arms, whilst we're at it), adding to it depictions in art.
Top notch
Thank you 🙏
Just bought Book 1. Whew! Thanks for the headsup.
Videos like this are why I love UA-cam.
Matt, Tobias, Todd and Lindy Beige on a livestream would be possibly the best 37 hours of entertainment ever.
Come on Matt, make it happen!
Oh man! Don't get my hopes up! They are, i my opinion, the best resources to watch to get an informative and entertainingly engaging to their best effect!
Yes but it has to make sense. It cant just be a collab for the sake of a collab.
Congratulations Dr. Cowell on completing the series!
"Hi folks I am Toby Capwell of scholagladiatoria and today I'm being interviewed by my guest Matt Easton" soonTM
Quality Dr. Capwell time.
Cheers! 💚
"Tom's gone crazy!"
Thank goodness for that! Congratulations Dr Capwell!
Got book 1 about 6 months ago. I love it! Can't wait to read book 2 and 3.
These interviews, the details and the explanations! All that just makes me invest more into these books. Bought the second one as well now and I'm looking at that first one with interest as well. It helps me understand more and it could also make some of my 3D models a bit more on point!
Absolutely loved the interview!
What a wonderful discussion! Thank you both.
Like the subject; love listening to these guys going over the materials ! They enjoy the exploration !!!
Thankyou for the link and the heads-up, I thought I'd missed my chance to get volume 1, but I now have a copy in the post :)
Listening to Dr. Capwell speak, I imagine him in thirty or forty years with wisps of white hair, his accent migrated almost all the way across the Atlantic, explaining why he's not going to be doing book sixteen in the full series of Medievall British militaria.
Which of course he will do...
I just bought them :-) Thanks to the both of you
I really hope someone (who knows, might be me, I'm currently in University studying history) can publish a definitive book like Dr. Capwell's on Spanish Armor.
Informative and entertaining as ever. Interesting to hear how Dr Capwells views on the subject have evolved over the years.
The over riding message I'm getting from this video is , don't be dogmatic, you will learn more that way. A message that can be taken into all aspects of a happy, balanced life . Sermon over.
That was a great interview. Thanks :)
These are absolutely fantastic videos Matt but I would suggest investing in a couple of chest mics as the sound is a bit variable in the last few and can't always hear you both well.
The royal armory in leeds is my favorite, my reasoning is the Mughal Elephant armor. As far as I know it is still the only intact complete elephant armor on public display in the world
Amazing video, thank you both for all the insight.
I got the opposite advice on my PhD subject. After finishing my master's I was so tired of its subject, and I was talking about it with a friend/colleague and she said "anything you work on for four years with the pressure of a PhD is something you'll get tired about, so choose something you don't love". I didn't follow it, but I did choose something that I didn't love because I love neuro but I wanted something that would be easier to get a job outside academia, because I didn't want to move to another city. But it's not good advice, anyway. A PhD is very different from a master's; I basically didn't choose a theme for my master's and it wasn't a problem, 2 years go by really quickly, but for my PhD, I found myself questioning whether I really wanted to study that, many times. And I did change my theme probably four times (and ended up on the second theme). So yeah, choose something that you love and about which you don't mind spending the next four years reading at least one article each day. And most importantly: do everything as if you didn't have a sponsor. Many of them feel that they are not there to help you do it, they are there to check your work, but they won't tell you that.
This really is a amazing talk about something I have loved to talk about great work
Really love these videos with the Dr. Really interesting content so please keep them up!
I can't wait to walk around bosworth and Tewkesbury from now on pointing at people in gothic armour shouting Blasphemy! With the blessing of Dr Capwell.
He just needed someone to open a door for him to get it published the way he wanted it done. It is so often about WHOM you know. WHAT you know too often isn't enough.
Dr Capwell should do 15th Century armour marble effigies of the Tahiti islands. That should take about ten seconds of "Are there any?" and a good long holiday. Love your work. :)
Thers no action!. I love history tho. Did not scroll forward ones. Great backgroud information. Makes it more intresting
I want this on my bookshelf ASAP.
Expanded work. With a working variable view. I happily accept that the work is in progress.
A book about Portuguese or Iberian armor would be amazing, because I want to buy an armor my ancestors might have worn but I haven't found any material about the differences of Iberian armor compared to the rest of Europe...
Good stuff, picked up the first two books and pre-ordered the 3rd!
Just fired up PayPal and got involved in book one £60 cheers all
These fantastic go to works are a credit to Dr Capwell.
That mix match of armor pieces reminds me of ranch/ cowboys and the various style and gear and how now days there is also a.mix match of different styles of gear and region.
I know it’s a huge ask for Dr Capwell but a book from his studies with Tod and putting that information that they get from the longbow tests into a book on Azingcourt and the effects of the longbow and how important it actually was to the English army would be interesting that would certainly be a huge help to anyone studying the Hundred Years’ War period and explaining why the English won or even worse why the French lost we know the archers had an effect but he really could with this study with Tod prove how much of an effect on the battlefield the Longbow actually had
I really want you to sell a digital version of these
Has Dr Capwell seen the wall painting from Coventry Charterhouse? It's a partial early 15th century crucifixion scene that features 2 armoured figures. I don't think it has been very well documented so far, as it was only rediscovered fairly recently and isn't normally open to the public. A local charity has been trying to restore the building and develop it as a tourist attraction for a few years, but they've only met with limited success and the building (a former Carthusian monastery) is on the Heritage at Risk register due to a leaky roof. The armoured figures representing the Roman soldiers persecuting Jesus are depicted in a 15th century style and show some details of the armour, as well as clothing worn with it and associated weapons, so might be of interest to him if he's not already seen them (or anyone else with an interest in medieval arms and armour, for that matter).
There are also some later, 16th century wall paintings in the same building, dating from its period as an elite residence following the dissolution of the monasteries, which include a pretty detailed portrayal of a 16th century soldier with a sword and shield (possibly anachronistic for the period). Anyway, it's a really great site that could really use more attention, academic and public alike.
I couldn't help it. Bought all three as if I'm made of money.
New look at medieval history and just 22+ years of study. Ez :]
Good job.
Twice I tried to give this video a thumbs up before realizing I had already done so.
just ordered Book 1!
I bought both the first books and I'm in Canada was super expensive I don't understand why book 3 is like 130£ it's gonna cost over 200$ CAD that's more than book 2 was with the 40£ shipping
Please. Please digitize all three volumes. While that presents its own set of problems, I would be happy to pay any reasonable fee to obtain them.
I would love to buy at least one (probably volume 1) if they are still available in stock.
Wish these weren’t sold out damn anyone have these books I would pay to see the pics
Thanks for another video
Great video, Matt! Love your interview videos, especially with Dr. Capwell. Is there any hope of his books eventually becoming available electronically? I'd love to get a copy of all three, but I don't currently have space for large, expensive books that I'd want to keep in as good condition as possible for longevity. I've already got ~1500 books that are a massive pain to own and about triple that amount in digital books that fit on my hard drive. A digital copy would be a welcome option and would, if he cares about that, ensure it would remain available for purchase for decades to come.
Nice work indeed.
The English armor almost has a feel of Gothic armor but more artful, with the softer form of Italian or French.
Much more personalized and unique compared to the mass-produced Milanese stuff.
Please do more with tobias
such a excellent, respected video. Rodge David kidderminster uk 🇬🇧
Just bought books 1 and 2 half way through the video. 🙂
Sold! 100 - 1 left of book 1
This is great stuff. Top shelf.
I´ll be waiting for the three volumes of Armor of the Spanish Knight, dreaming is free... ;)
Wow, super cool
