At least Cody still has his sense of childlike fun for the slide. Love it
I don't blame you for leaving, there's no way I could handle that. It did look like a nice spot but that was insane. You guys crack me up swatting at everything, (I'd be the same way) I thought Cody broke the swatter hehe. As always love watching you guys. 😀💙
The little town where I grew up had a big slide like that. The next time you come across another slide like that sit on a piece of wax paper. Super fast! We’ve all had our bugfests😆. Keep on campin!!!!!
When you can actually see the insects in the video, it tells you all you need to know about how bad it was! Glad y'all got out of there!
As a native Michigander and former camper, I couldn't help but laugh at your attempts to rid your tent of our bugs! It brought back so many memories. Watching Cody outside and then hearing and seeing your wife battling the bugs in the tent had me laughing out loud. Summer in Michigan is bug season and I hibernate until mid-September when it's safe to get out in the woods again. Hope you're able to enjoy our beautiful state in Autumn when it's truly spectacular. (It's also beautiful in the winter but I think that may be an acquired taste.) Great video!
Born and raised in Arkansas, now living in the U.P. for the last 4 years. So awesome to have you up, enjoying the beauty of the U.P.. If you ever return to the area (I own the Newberry News in Newberry....just south of the Tahquamenon Falls State Park) let me know. I'd love to do a story about your travels through the area and get your thoughts on your adventures through the area!
Have you ever considered a screenhouse? If you’re going to be in buggy areas, that would really help.
Tried that once.
We still talk about the thunderstorm.
@@Skyhors3 Have you considered going where the bugs aren't?
You guys need a fan. We use the fan to keep down the bugs especially over night. We’ve been camping since 1974. Stayed in a canvas tent for 51/2 months. We were looking for a new place to live and settled in NWArkansas.
I have to admit it was comical watching Cody going to town on swatting those flies! 😂 That looks MISERABLE!! And watching kid Cody on the slide was priceless! 😂
Am watching this nodding my head and laughing. This captures camping in the UP in Michigan ,in the summer perfectly. I have definitely been there. Then you try to make a go of it as long as you can until you break camp and run for the nearest motel or cabin you can find. Peaceful weekend ✌️😎✌️🇺🇲🇺🇲
Right with you, sisterearth. Actually captures camping ANYWHERE in Michigan in the summer! 🙂
@@rosek2967 yes so true 😁
We used to love those old slides even though it was like sittin your bum in a hot oven during the day! It doesn't get any slicker than that polished metal!
I ve lived in Michigan for almost 70 years. Ive only been to the UP once between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The biting bugs are legendary. You forgot to mention the black flies and sable flies.
Black flies are back in Episode I, Memorial Weekend. Stable Flies are in Episode III, yet to be released. ;-)
As native a Yooper one solution to the bugs is to be in the sun where there's a breeze. That pretty much means on the lake. Nighttime bon fire on the beach avoids the deer flies, and bug spray at night takes care of the mosquitos, but if you're in the woods, God help you because pretty much nothing else will. We're pretty much experts on which repellents works best (as a matter of survival). If you're driving at night the bugs literally sound like light rain hitting the windshield.
Coming to the U.P. in August. We stay away from woods & rivers... and long ago stopped tent camping. It is one of those things that is appealing.... but bug bites get old quick .. and last too long as you heal.
We stay in a 40 ft diesel RV with a king bed, A/C, etc.. at ages 83 & 81 we rv to see the local highlights -- we will do Tahquamenom Falls... etc
and we use Golden Buzzaround mobility scooters, and I still carry & ride my Trek bike --- but hanging out in the woods at a primitive campground is ok in your 20's & 30's .... and spraying ourselves with Deet gets old too.
Glad you left when you did.
Very glad you came to Mich.
Glad you decided to use cgs.
Btw, our MI state parks allow campfires... and just about everyone builds one, so there are fewer bugs. In 2021 we did 4 State Parks in the lower peninsula and had NO bugs... and we do not build fires. Traverse City State park is really nice, and Harrisville, and Bay City, and Algonac. Algona is across the street from water, and Harrisville is on water.
Suck them up with a sweeper! Dang! Yes ...time to bug out.they won this round. Regroup ,maybe head to higher elevations. We used waxed paper to sit on when sliding, make it more slippery
Thanks for sharing with us. We enjoy watching your adventures (and misadventures). We really appreciate how you find a way to enjoy yourselves!
See ya!!! Thanks for taking us along. So glad you found a cute motel. Hope you are enjoying!
I laughed SO HARD watching with the fly swatter 🤣🤣🤣…..but, seriously, all those biting flies are no joke. I feel for you guys
Forget the slide. Look at that merry-go-round. I thought those things were outlawed. I haven't seen one since I was a kid.
I love watching you both. I totally understand why you both left. Flies to me are the worse. You both inspire me to get out and explore the world. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.
Love ya’ll positive attitude, keep on rocking and camping, glad ya’ll found a place to stay away from those nasty bugs.
I'm so sorry that the bugs got the best of you it was funny to see Cody do his karte moves to kill the bugs glad you where able to find a place away from the bugs stay safe and safe travels can't wait for the next video 😊
The struggle is real! Glad you found a good place to stay and a fun park to cook and play at. Looking forward to more of your Michigan travels. I was born in Michigan and have family there so went back every summer growing up. It has so many great outdoor places.
Go to a Walmart & pick up 2 bug zapper rackets. Works wonders in the tent truck & around the camp fire 🔥.
Lots of bugs! That's Michigan for you! Those deerflies and horse flies HURT when they bite! I'd leave too. I was so happy to move to Texas and get away from all those nasty bugs!
This happened to us once in Missouri when we were setting up camp. Next day they were gone, thank you Lord! I grew up in West Virginia ( live in Kansas now). I have very fond memories of Holly River State Park. So many beautiful places there and Arkansas reminds me a lot of West Virginia. I think you would love it!
As an outdoor person I recommend Sawyer Permethrin insect repellent for clothing and gear. Last through several washings. Spray inside of tent. cuffs and sleeves and backpacks. For bare skin Eucalyptuses mosquito repellent or the usual DEET.
Kia ora Kellie and Cody. Omg those bugs, that would certainly drive me insane! Good call going indoors 🤗.
Omigosh, what a fun video you gave us! You really took one for the team taking the time to shoot video all while trying to deal with the bugs and break down camp. As much as I laughed, I had great empathy for you as well. The biting flies can make you crazy in the head. LOL! Thank you for turning a rough situation into fun youtube fodder for the rest of us.
Bug zapper is your best defense, I live near, and a zapper is what I am going to buy. Those flies bite also, and Cody looks funny having a row with them. Stay safe
We camped in the UP every year growing up. Loved it!
I loved seeing Cody sliding down the slide. It was awesome to see a metal slide still being used.
I love those slides! That was like what we had at school!
And mosquito coils .. they come with a small case you can hang in your tent (it's like an incense stick) and keep the tent big free.
With Kellie's sensitivity to some insect bites, you made a very wise decision to go to a motel. From our time in the northern woods of Maine, we learned that head nets are very helpful to prevent bites and preserve sanity. While in those wooded areas, we also wore light weight long pants and shirts. Hang in there and keep on campin'. We love watching your travels.
Those burgers looked tasty!! Yums. Can't wait to go camping again. Thanks Kelly and Cody.
The bugs in Michigan are no joke. Those deer flies BITE . But the deer ticks are worse.
Really beautiful untouched land .
Anytime I had a difficult camping situation it was due to flying insects. I wore a head net over a wide brim hat, long sleeves and long pants. I prefer shorts at camp but protection was imperative. For my van I cut no see-um mesh to fit my sliding door and the rear barn doors. Custom fit mesh slide over the two front doors t provide ventilation when the windows are down. I found insect repelling bracelets at REI that are very effective. Leaving a campsite is a PIA but you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm 75 but when I find a good slide and swing seats that fit I love to play and remember my youthful days. Kid Cody (lol), that was fun to see your face after the first slide. I keep two of those telescoping fly swatters in my van, one for the cab and one in the back.
Best part of as Cody and the slide. Great video, bugs will put a damper on everything outside. 😻🤗
Puts a whole new meaning to bugout! LOL
I can’t STAND flies! No way could I stay there. Lol definitely find another place to where you will be more comfortable.
You don’t know fun fly killin’ til you’ve used a bug-a-salt gun. Sounds like y’all need one! Though Cody’s Matrix moves are far more entertaining for us. 🤣
welcome to the yoop the bugs are crazy this year, took me a while to get use to them when I moved here 11 years ago
Man. I feel your pain. As a native born and bread in Michigan Ive been there many times….we’re currently in interlochen State Park (by Traverse City and Sleeping Bear dunes) Michigan’s first state park.
I’ve been loving all the content every couple of days. Hope you truly are enjoying your stay despite the occasional set backs…. Michigan summers can be great and we have a beautiful natural state.
Hoping and would love to see a recap video from you of your thoughts after you leave Michigan.
Happy camping
Andy.
A few things I've learned just this past couple of years:
Deer flies are attracted to things that move, and they hone in on anything that looks like a "head". A baseball cap is your friend. They'll keep trying to land on the cap instead of your hair. One of those safari hats with a neck flap would be perfect. Of course they tag team with mosquitoes. If you sit perfectly still the deer flies will lose interest and go away but then the mosquitoes find you. ;-) I hike with a dish towel, and I use the towel to swat my back as needed. Hardly the ideal situation but it works.
If you can concentrate the effect of a Thermacell in a mostly enclosed space (tent with door open) its effectiveness increases dramatically. I minivan camp, and I find if I light a Thermocell inside even with a sliding door open and windows cracked, even with my dog jumping in and out and the bugs following, the bugs fizzle within minutes and are gone. In related news, I plan my menu so that I can prepare food in the minivan or outdoors. If the bugs are sparse I have a delightful cook-out. If the bugs are really really bad a roast beef sandwich inside by the Thermacell is pretty good too. ;-)
Now that I've frequented several places over several years, I've discovered some places are chronically terrible with bugs and others are relatively bug free. Often these places are within a 20 minute drive from each other. Haven't found the magic potion yet of what makes one or the other, but if I find the bugs are really bad I will retreat to one of my reputable bug free camp sites.
FYI I was camping near your location over the same holiday date using these methods. I don't claim I have all the answers but I feel I'm on to something. ;-)
😬nasty ol'bugs!!! That slide!!!😆💚We used to play on one like that, but it had a chain net you had to climb and the top had a little cover over the very top. You're for sure right ...they don't make them like they used to.
Love the park & dinner of good ole burgers. So glad you found such a sweet place to stay. A/C, long, hot showers, no bugs (I hope).
I’m using Thermacell products and they make an amazing difference in the number of pests I deal with. They have tabletop models and there are also personal models you can carry with you or attach to your clothing with a Thermacell holster. To clear out mosquitoes/flies indoors I have a rechargeable “tennis racket”-shaped bug zapper that kills them on contact instead of just repelling them. Good luck!
LOL, Cody's countenance on the thumbnail is priceless, God bless y'all.
I remember camping once outside of Salt Lake City UT up at East Canyon. The flies and mosquitoes were so bad we had to stay in the tent. The minute we would go outside...they were swarming our face. Don't blame you for leaving.
Geeee.... guys sorry about those bugs,it was a beautiful area, glad you got out of there, wow when I was little I went to the top of a slide that high I tried sliding on my feet made a sudden stop I fell had concoction I was around 5 at the time...brought back memories when I saw you sliding...LOL glad you
enjoyed it. GOD BLESS, stay safe.
I like to do day trips in while camping in the UP to sight seeing spots to get away from the bugs. Also yeah gotta keep the fire going all day, it really does help a lot. I like to camp on the Great Lakes shores and go to the beach a lot too.
I just love watching you guys and your adventures.
It was great meeting you guys today! I was the one mountain biking at forestville campground. Beautiful rig and setup. Like is said the mosquitos scared us off of our campsite a few days ago as well! Safe travels! Until we meet again.
It's so cool you guys have been staying up here! Love your channel! Saw you also stayed in Munising and got to enjoy Pictured Rocks....definitely one of our prettiest natural wonders. Sorry bout the flies, lol.....they suck this time of year.
I saw those metal slides while I was in the UP and was shocked and thrilled to see them.
I lived in the U.P. as a kid for 1.5 years and my Dad was from Minnesota. I don't know how I spent so much time fishing and hanging out around water in both states. The bugs are insane.
Happy 4th Of July 🎆🧨🎇
🎶 Oh there ain't no bugs on me. There ain't no bugs on me. There may be bugs on some of you mugs. But there ain't no bugs on me 🎶 😉
I would have ran too.
The Big Slide, could never get enough of growing up, second home the Park was.
Safe camping and travel's 🏕️🚙
Man that fly swatter did it's best! Sorry y'all had to move on but don't blame you at all!
The U.P. is just beautiful, but the best time to go is fall when the colors are at peak and the bugs are GONE!
Up north, the summertime there’s a lot of mosquitoes and horse flies. Really enjoying your adventure in the upper peninsula. Hope both you get a to kayak in Munising. Also consider Boundary Waters wilderness in Minnesota if haven’t been already.
Enjoy and be safe as always
He is killing me swatting those bugs🤣🤣
Omg those things were nasty I don't blame you ar all for leaving 😳 Thank goodness you found a nice place fir your mini vacation 😊 😀 ☺️ 😄 🙂 🤗 😊
Interesting what you say about winters. Your bad experience reminds me of my dad's farm in Alberta Canada. When it isn't snowing it is horrible horrible horse flys, mosquitoes, deer flies etc. My dad got used to it. I never did. Now on Vancouver Island, BC we just had a particularly harsh winter that even killed many of our trees. The bugs are fierce this summer. Will try a smoking fire. And haul out my bug zapper for when we are at home. Love your channel. One of my two favorites.
So glad you found somewhere to stay! They usually bug spray at campgrounds so that’s why they are marginally less buggy.
Happy 4th!
You need one of those head net in these kind of regions...As long as it's not like those big mosquitos that bite you. Safe travels...Love you guys.
I laughed so much watching you swat the bugs. Miserable ,I'm sure ! I would be running for cover ,that is so crazy ! Bug ninja !
It’s such a shame you had to leave that camping spot, it was beautiful. But, I would have left too. Love and be safe!🤗😘🌼🇻🇪
I’m originally from Canada, I can attest to the deer and horse fly issues. On scout hikes we used to put peacock feathers or a stick with a bandanna/flag on our packs or hats to keep them out of our faces. Totally helped. We’d also play “horse fly baseball” with our hats. I remember smacking a few into trees or rocks and watching them splat with satisfaction.
Watching the flys , in this video , making me itchy yucky lol 😂
I believe the Deer Flys are worse in July when they hatch. We pack fly strips. We also have to wear long pants and long sleeves shirts. They are brutal.
^
Love the videos. You guys definitely need to go north to Marquette. It’s the biggest town in the UP. Tons of coffee places, breweries, restaurants, and stuff to do!
Best time to visit Michigan is in the fall. Beautiful colors and less bugs.
A strong fan can ease the bombardment! Fall camping is the best time to experience the UP, I think,
I remember camping (or trying to) in the Grand Marais, Michigan area one summer when the deerflies were out. They landed on DEET-soaked pant cuffs, got inside the tent, or just drove me crazy with their incessant noise. I had to pack up after a few hours and headed South across the bridge. Though I haven't tried it yet (I purchased the materials just in case), I've since heard that a blue plastic Solo cup covered with adhesive gunk diverts their attention from heads/bodies and attracts them to the plastic cup where they get stuck and perish. You might try that defense against them. They are even bad sometimes around water bodies in the lower peninsula where I live.
Hang in there kids your doing great
I hope I'm not a bad person but i couldn't help laughing at y'all going all Bruce Lee on the bugs! We had a similar experience at Surf Side, TX when the wind came from the swamps. SO many mosquitoes, like flying biting shrimp!🤣 You will laugh once this experience is in the past. But so glad you escaped too!
This video reminds me of when I went camping in the UP one May and little did I know it was midge season, and was constantly swarmed with midges! Probably would take that over horseflies, though. Summer in UP is no joke!
Just so you know, bugs in the Adirondacks and in Maine are HORRRRRIBLE!! If you’re headed that way, … prepare yourself.
The UP is notorious for black flies. I remember hearing that that fort in Copper Harbor was abandoned a few times because of black flies.
I’d leave too! 😝 My husband loves those electric fly swatters!
Yes, the bugs are perpetually annoying out in the UP woods, need bug dope to survive. Campgrounds & parks spray to keep bugs somewhat at bay.
I remember a Girl Scout camp in Wisconsin once - mosquito land
Try the fly traps and yellow jacket traps hang them in the trees away from where you are. Kind of expensive but if you're staying for a few days worth it.
They'd need at least ten though for all those buggers.
Good men never grow up completely! They never forget how to play.
Just a heads up that the deer flies are usually horrible at Black River Harbor in the Ottawa National Forest too. Drove us out of there a couple of times! Hope you get up to Copper Harbor. The Keweenaw peninsula is special. Also recommend Bayfield, WI and the Apostle Islands. You can take the ferry across to Madeline Island and enjoy a brew at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe. Hang in there with the flies!
The but burner slide lol. I work for our city and we took our slide like that down a few years ago because it was breaking and causing a hazard
One summer I traveled all over Michigan organizing beer drinkers against a new sales tax. visited hundreds of places and always stayed at the little motel lodges. family-owned and all unique. Happy 4th of July!
Try the Black flag handheld bug zapper. It takes two AA batteries and is fantastic camping. You can buy it at Lowes or Home depot or even Amazon may have it. It costs between $8-$10.00 bucks. I'm a novice camper, just went camping for the first time this past July fourth weekend and believe you me when I tell you, that thing was amazing! Bugs will think twice and tell their friends before coming anywhere near your campsite. Cheers!
One near here, sand creek, cattle running around, makes for more flies, than I'se can takes. Got one called fly creek too, we never went there.
ya need those hats with the netting hooked on them you-all can probably get them at a dollar general store cheap I have 4 or 5 of them keep 2 in the car 2 of them in my backpack at all times
Burgers on the Barby, always so good !
I'm only 4:30 into your video and I've found that we could have used your martial arts type swatting skills at Santee Coastal Reserve down here in South Carolina. I've been camping at SCR twice and will never return because of the mosquitoes. It's where often travelers park their campers with kids and bikes in tow. The bikes? They're leaning outside. No one can ride them or they will literally be eaten alive. We thoroughly enjoy your productions. Especially the awesome cooking! See yalldown the road we hope! Headed points West soon.👌
The bugs were not funny! Watching you two at war with them was HILARIOUS!!!
No way with those Flys! Better head for oregon! It's that brown water! Yikes! Happy trails ! God bless!
Happy 4th and wishing you a bug free day!
If I was a cartoonist, I would have the two of you sitting on top off a Horse Fly flying off into the sunset 🌅 never to be seen again (until the next video that is) lol 😆
If anyone out there is a cartoonist maybe you could do it. What a hoot
Cheers Lynne Victoria Australia 🇦🇺🐨👍🏻💙💜
It does get pretty crazy up there, lol, we use the picardin lotion. That is one of those good old school slides lol
Little note Cody and Kelly in summer fly love the water they was everywhere when I went fishing and camping at the river p.s them fly kick your butts man 😆 I laugh when you trying to get them bug candles work sometimes keep up the good work God bless stay safe.
You’all have to get a portable bug zapper. That is a bummer. Especially on a holiday. I feel ya. And man, Cody, I always learn something about nature from you. 👍🏼 that.
