    I like hearing you chime in about your street photography philosophy. I remember you sharing some thoughts about social media and especially video making with street photography. I too found it devalued the photographs upon my initial reflection. As I think more about it, I believe the videos can be as valuable as the photographs. Sure- a final print is a work of art, but in my personal philosophy I’ve been adopting the idea that the act of photographing is art itself. As a former skateboard enthusiast, this is how I thought about skating in the streets. The act of being in the streets, recognizing moments, and asking questions about the world has become the art for me. The final print and sharing the work on social media is starting to become a bi product. Who knows- my thoughts will probably sound silly to photographers that have been around for decades, but I think with each year that passes and every picture we make, our philosophy will ultimately change with time.

      Yo Dante! That is a great thought! I do agree with you and I remember when I was skating I would always enjoy seeing skaters goof around or seeing their failed tries before they land a trick in a skatevideo. The process is equally meaningful as the outcome. And you definitely give people a richer experience by sharing your POV videos AND the work that came our of it. It might take a bit of mystery away from the final image but the build up and reaction after every photograph is interesting too. You know I think we might treasure these "processes" way more than the images itself. The process is rarely documented and we have more and more images floating online and the mountain of images we have to see everyday makes us numb to the experience a photograph can have on us. But everyone has a different approach or experience and maybe that is what we want to re-experience in the future rather then looking at crafted ideas that are finalized. We might actually already live this future. Sharing Photography on UA-cam has already had a big impact. But only sharing slideshows doesn't cut it. You need to tell a story around it or share your process. We will see where it goes :)

    I watched this with my 8 year old son and he has declared that he wants either a Ricoh GRIII or a Ricoh GRIIIx. My response was "Hey, that's really cool, but those cost something like $1200 (Canadian Dollars) and not even I have one yet. His response - "Well ... then can I have a GRII?" 😆 These are the fun conversations that you have to look forward to, and you probably already have the GRII to pass down from father to son.

    I like your comments about shooting for future generations. I have taken photos since 1959 when I was in the army stationed in Munich. I have worked as a freelancer (no longer pays) and have beefed retired from my engineering job for 18 years now. Having worked weekends shooting for a weekly newspaper, shot weddings etc , today I shoot just for myself. I look for people who are doing interesting things. A friend once told me that I would be famous, in about 100 years. I just hope that people might look at my photos to see how we dressed etc. Charlotte,NC is one of the fastest growing cities in America and I take lots of construction of a growing skyline. Like most of your videos.

    Your lists at 9:38 are why I switched to wide angle. I used to hate clutter, but clutter is life. I love to try to take photos I like that top category even if they get called snaps. I don't feel like an artist, so I don't try to make art. I just want to capture perspective in time.

    Really interesting story. I too like to photograph street scenes in cities, and when I get a crowd scene, I always find it interesting to look at the photo afterwards and see all that I missed when I took the photo. There is always at least one person who is looking straight into the camera as a sort of silent witness to my being there.
    In the future, as the web grows and computing power increases, and as AI becomes more powerful and free roaming, I think we will see the gathering up of all photographs and video clips that will all be run through processing to produce an astounding capability to see and travel back in time. Basically, we will be able to go to a map, choose a location, and in some period of time we specify, this vast collection of data will be able to show us what was happening.

    I'm in a bit of a rut with photography right now. I feel uninspired and don't know what or how to shoot. I do go out and bring a camera with me whenever I have something going on. I take lots of pictures but I don't look at them right away. I store them in a HD and revisit them later on. It brings out interesting and emotions from when I took them, even though I mostly shoot snapshot, docu style.

    iiiX straightforwardly gives a very street style feeling. While iii, the wide lens gives more novelty. I have the iii already & now I am tempting to get iiix!

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 роки тому +1

      Yes the IIIx has that classic 35mm or 50mm look. 28mm is more dynamic and can be very powerful and intimate when going up close to the subject. But at the moment I like the classic look a lot :)

      @@SamuelStreetlife Yeah, the fact that the kids looks like they're in charge. The boy in the red jacket looks like a mini Captain Kirk about to give commands for the Starship Enterprise. The adults in the background all masked - maybe fearful and compliant - and the kids maskless and commanding the ship. I dig it.

    Agree about 28mm is always my preferred focal length bringing a much wider environment, that we need in street and documentary photography. the GRiiix's frames are looks too cropped. As well the POV videos from streets or events bring much more information and they urge us to be closer to the object.

    Can I ask were these pre-focused/zone focused with small apertures? I find relying on autofocus, no matter how good, results in areas being out of focus depending on where the focus points are.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 роки тому +2

      Most of the photos I took with autofocus. I often focus on my subject first and then hold the focus with the shutter button half pressed and keep it half pressed to lock the focus while continuing to take pictures. Or I use the FN button on the back to focus and lock. Snap Focus is always set to 5 meter on my GR IIIx and I find it pretty easy to get focused images even at F2.8 at that distance. With the GR III I use snap focus at 1,5 or 2 meters a lot and then try to close my aperture as much as I can. But I find using autofocus and locking it more useful. There is always enough time to focus properly first and then take the shots. In most situations.

    Samuel, great video as always. I am confused though. I thought street photography was actually illegal in Germany? Does nobody care, or do you risk getting someone complaining and you being in trouble? Have I misunderstood the rules in Germany?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 роки тому +3

      You are allowed to take photographs in public spaces including people but you are not allowed to publish these images anywhere where the public can find them. Everyone in germany has the rights over their own image so anyone can demand you to delete or remove photographs from the public (that of course includes online). BUT Street Photography is also considered an artform and is protected by the "Kunstrecht" (law) which gives everyone the freedom to express yourself artisticly in any medium you want. And because Street Photography in its nature is candid, it is in a bit of a grey zone. So basically you can take photographs of everything in the public space but people have the right to not have their picture taken and if someone asks you to delete their photograph you have to follow that request. But if that doesn't happen and you plan to do a photo exhibition with your street pics for example, you can even charge an entry fee or sell your work because you are allowed to profit from your art (if it supports you as an artist). The moment you use a photograph of a street scene with identifiable faces for a flyer to advertise your exhibition than that is forbidden because now you are using your images commercially and then you need written permits from all subjects. In the last two decaces there have only been 2 cases I think where Photographers were sued for publishing street photographs. And the photographers had always won those cases (one had to remove posters he was using for an exhibition and pay a few bucks to the subject for compensation but it wasn't much). As long as you are not seriously harming people with your images you should be fine :)
