My tip is defo get used to your new biting point. I got my new car and the bite was totally different to the car I learnt in. I picked my car up at 5pm on a Friday night... Rush hour on a Friday is not a fun time to stall 4 times in a row at traffic lights 😂

I've struggled with this each time I've ever got a new car (I passed in 2010). I recently got a new Fiat 500 and the bite point was completely different to my old Ford fiesta I was absolutely petrified driving it at first! I went to a empty car park to practise as I kept stalling

I passed today with 1 minor. The minor was when the examiner told me to pull up on the left when it was safe to do so, I pulled up in front of someones drive. Not too fussed about it, it was a silly mistake but Im glad a finally passed. Cheers for the help from your videos.

Thanks for the video! I passed at the beginning of this week third time with 4 minors after years of on and off lessons and only being consistent with it I’d say for the last year.
I’ve gone from my instructor’s tiny hyundai, to my neighbour’s Vauxhall Astra as they helped me learn, to my other half’s brand new bmw (I know very lucky)
This week I felt like I was on such a high because I passed, then I came back from my first drive in the bmw deflated because it felt like I was learning all over again.
This video and talking to a friend helped me feel a lot better :) !

Thank you Travis. Very very helpful video again. I just passed my test on 25 Jul. I got a car last week only. I learned on diesel and I got a petrol 1.2. You absolutely right. Just take time get familiar with the car. Know every single details about light, screen wiper etc. First couple of times my partner came with me and I am sure everyones confident will grown up slowly. I am using a P sign on the car just let other users know that I am a chicken on the road.

I passed 5 years ago and hadn't driven a car in that time. 2 months ago I decided I needed to get on the road and took a couple of refresher lessons only to be told I didnt need them as they can clearly see I know how to drive and all I need is to get my own car to gain confidence. I was surprised to be told this after not being in a car in 5 years ( day I passed was the last day) this video as helped ease some of the anxieties about getting behind the wheel of my own car when I get one.

@@JamesTravis can I ask you something?
I have 4 different tyres on my car .the size is the same (14) but the patterns are different. Is it dangerous to drive like that?is it legal?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  5 років тому

Hi, I am not an expert on tyres.
I think you are ok legally. I usually have the two front the same and the back tyres the same so you get the same grip off the tread.
As long as the tyres have at least the 1.6mm tread for the UK.
Check that they are all steel radials(says on the side).

My first drive after I passed (41years ago) was in the breakdown wagon to pick up some tyres from a local tyre dealer, the wagon had no handbrake and to start it you had to lift the engine cover and push the button on the starter solenoid!! I was 17 and it was on one of the busiest roads in Glasgow at 1.30 on a Friday afternoon, the exact date I can't remember but the rest is etched deep in my memory......baptism of fire so to speak.

2 years ago When I drove my parents car which was a fiesta and I did the test in it I felt so comfortable in it. I was still scared to go out on my own and it was a couple of weeks after I passed where I challenged myself to go out on my own. I found music helps. When I got my own car which was another fiesta, same age but a different engine. It was a smaller engine, only a 1L but the eco boost model was so different it took me a little while to adjust to it. It is always a gear lower than my parents car was and surpassingly despite the lower engine size it was much faster and the gas pedal was much more sensitive and if not careful it can shoot forward quite quick if you don't want it to like in car parks or in stop start traffic so that took me a little while to get used to how it felt.

I passed in an automatic started in a manual but I don't understand why people always insist that manual is the "right way to go", an auto is cheaper to run generally, more safe (because of hill starts etc), better for the environment and just generally easier to drive, in 15 years a lot of people would've switched to electric cars anyway, I understand that people wouldn't want to limit themselves to drive automatic for the rest of their lives but once you go automatic, you never go back!

    • @nialouise6247

My problem is that I drove for years in America WITH a license, but here i have to get used to a whole new way of driving. Like on the left side of the road, and the right side of the car, it's like my brain got confused, I'm better now, a lot better, but I'm still getting to know the way the roads work, which is COMPLETELY different. It's too easy in the States, this here is proper driving. Oh and another thing is that in the States there's only a small percentage that can even drive a manual, fortunately I did know how already, but I guess my point is that even though a person can drive, they've still got to learn the rules of the road and the layout of it. Roundabouts are a whole new aspect to me 😂

    Hello travis
Sorry to be a burden on this video but im wondering could you do a video on this subject please and help me in the right direction,
What it is last week my current driving instructor passed away (shock to us all) i ant been driving for couple months due to xmas period so been short on money! But was planning on booking test this month and was gunner get a couple of hours just to go through an have a little drive around if you get me witch i spoke to me driving instructor saying this and he was like no worries what ever is best for you' but sadly he passed away' so my question to someone (myself) that suffers from depression and enxiety how to go about getting another driving instructor to take me on fron where i was at' what do you sat to them and how would they go about it.... i dont want to be spending loads again coz they dont know ruit or how i am or how they think i am at when im know what i want too do.... its just worring me to the bone and i have only got till august till theory runs out... ifyou can give us advice or make a vid about these situations coz im prob not the only one' ps sorry if u dont understand what am trying to say mucj am not good with expressing words lol ... thanks andy

Hi Andrew, I think I understand.
I will do a video, but a couple of tips to get you started straight away.
      1. Try and find out what type of car your last instructor taught you in. Then phone up the local driving school or type in google driving instructor in your area that teaches in the same type of car. That will help and take some stress out of a very stressful time.
      2. Contact an instructor, or ask a friend to recommend an instructor. Ask the instructor to assess your driving. Explain you were on the verge of taking your test.
      3. Ideally you want an instructor that is teaching in a similar type of car to make your transition smooth.
      4. If no instructor teaches in the same type of car, then you are looking for an instructor who is very understanding and will encourage you and listen to you.
Hope you manage to get it sorted.

I still feel so nervous, I know I shouldn’t be, as I passed 1st time with 3 minors , if I wasn’t good enough I wouldn’t have passed. Any tips on getting over the nerves? Chelle J I am also a new older driver, i finally plucked up the courage to book my first ever lesson last year and after 9 months I passed first time. I too am still nervous about driving on my own but I’ve found doing short journeys with routes I know well and gradually going further out has helped me. For me being older has definitely been a factor in how nervous I’ve felt, I’ve worked on not overthinking what I’m going to do and instead just get in the car and drive like I did on my lessons and test. Because I thought I’d fail, in my head I was thinking I shouldn’t of passed but like you said I tell myself if the examiner didn’t think I was good then they wouldn’t of passed me!
In no time we’ll be thinking what was I so nervous about WE CAN DRIVE!! 😊

Bring the car to a stop at the stop line. Then if needed edge out slowly and if you can get out, go for it. Otherwise you might have to stop again.
