I really don't get what was so great about Rob, don't get me wrong I love him and his tragic story, but he's made really stupid decisions and died without doing anything major, Rob was just there to give the viewers and readers hope after Ned's execution, just so he can get slaughtered at the red wedding afterwards
@@dik56 To make the show interesting after Ned died, they needed to create more stakes, that was Rob's role and besides, why would the Starks forgo their father's death? It led to nothing but it was still interesting, as they say it's about the journey and not the ending. The show kept reminding the viewers that there won't be a happy ending. There was never really a vengeance path after that, Arya was probably the only person who was willing to kill Cersei for killing her father. Each and every Stark had a role after there father's death, Rob's was war, Arya's was vengeance, Jon's (ik he's technically not a Stark but still) was to find his identity, Bran was to try and be more useful than he is and Sansa was to survive. @@jackhughes3981 Oh Jon should not be thrown away, but he should definitely not be king. That would go against everything the story stands for. An ending where the most generic fantasy protagonist ends up on the throne (the Lord of the Rings ending) would just be trite. It would just turn GoT into the fairytale it has been trying to subvert from the very beginning. If the story really was like that Ned would've survived and Robb would've won.
@@filipstellberg8280 I think the problem comes from treating GoT as something that it's not namely a fantasy drama. I think that a historical metaphor (with some fantasy elements) is much more plausible. Given that GRRM has said that it is loosely based on English medieval history I brought into the thesis the base story was more akin to Shakespeare's Heneriad trilogies than LOTR. @@jackhughes3981 Except it is a fantasy drama, except if you subscribe to the theory that it's sci-fi in disguise. GRRM thinks they're the same anyway. Now I haven't read Shakespeare's Heneriad trilogies, so I don't know what comparison is being made. However treating it as a historical metaphor and saying that "Under the logic of historical monarchy Jon would be king", doesn't really work. ASOIAF from the start has set out to portray fantasy in a realistic light, where nothing is ever so simple as "the true heir gets the throne". The idea of ASOIAF isn't really all that complicated. GRRM is kind of a hippie who is strongly against war; he is particularly obsessed with Vietnam. In its entirety the ASOIAF series serves as a critique of feudalism and by extension a critique of the elements of feudalism that still exist today: wars over familial slights, arranged marriages and the status of women in society, ableism, titles being inherited through family rather than merit etc. Saying something like "these people did it therefore GRRM will to" kind of misses the entire point. The more accurate description of GRRM's writing style is "these people did it so he *won't* do it". Going by that logic Jon will not be the one to win the game of thrones. GRRM has never had the generic fantasy protagonist (which Jon is) win, his stories rarely if ever have happy endings anyway.

Sansa is named the Warden of the East. Rickon is named the Warden of the North. Bran becomes the new Master of Whispers. Arya reunites with Nymeria and plans to sail west of Westeros. Jon and Daenerys marry and are co-rulers, uniting the beyond the Wall region and the North with the rest of the 6 kingdoms.
