You are talking about two different types of work. If you need to mow, till, plough, disc for farming you need a tractor. What you are doing is site work and excavation. That requires iron. You are usually better off paying someone with the right equipment to come in and do it. But I get it , it costs a lot of money and it's easier for you to chip away at it.
Honestest opinions are a valuable, nice of you to share your knowledge Justin. Good on you mate
Dang UA-cam! Just noticed my notifications (bell button) was set to none instead of all.
You make many useful points here. Used equipment has always been my choice. Stick with brands that have a good reputation for being reliable. Make sure they don't have anything majorly wrong with them. A backhoe/loader is a very useful piece of equipment too.
Found the channel due to the kayak speedboating (good videos by the way) and caught this video. I think your big failing was that you bought a Mahindra. If you truly did your research.. you'd learn that you bought a 3rd rate tractor. For example, I have a Deere 110tlb. It only has 900 hours on it and it has broken, exactly one time since I had it since new. And it was the front electronic valve actuator. $160 (which is practically free when we are talking Deere parts prices).
As for the skid steer argument. There is a reason that compact tractors AND skid steers exist alongside each other. Try towing things around with your skid steer.. nope. You CAN put a backhoe on your skid steer, but the prices tend to be brutal and the sizes are limited. Stability (off camber, front/back).. skidsteer.. nope. Mud? Unless you get a track machine, you're in a world of hurt. Anything PTO driven? Maybe there are skidsteer adapters, but I don't know.
A modern compact tractor gives up some agility and raw lifting power for true universality as compared to a skid steer. I'd love to have both too, but the reality is buy a non-garbage tractor and accept that you might have to do a few tasks a little slower, but your overall functionality is much greater.
Your results may vary.. but again.. there is a reason that BOTH exist along side each other.
Good honest feedback and experience. Good video
After you and Chucky2009’s mahindra experiences.... no chance I’d buy one!
But I just started working for an excavation company. Mini and compact track loader is the dream team!
Hawkins and Longview. Cool.
Great video and advice, thank you!
I have had a used Kubota and a nearly new John Deere. I have mostly just done maintenance stuff. Haven’t met many people with a zetor or mahindra who were happy
Looks like “somebody’s” been watching Andrew Camarata videos huh.
Ha! I absolutely love his videos! He never stops working! I have a great deal of respect for him.
I love running mini excavators.
I have seen your future. You will have trouble with your mini excavator shortly after you get it. 😆
Skid steers and excavators are awsome. I purchased an old massy furguson mf30 for my house to start with. A good old heavy build piece of iron with a 5k pound front end loader. It takes care of my front end loader needs. I will eventually have an excavator though. I rented one without a thumb this past spring and they are wxtreamly handy.
My opinion about equipment, if you are working land, say 20 or more acres, and can only have 2 pieces of equipment get a heavy duty used tractor with a front end loader and a 3 point on the back, and then a mini excavator with a thumb and a blade. I have a fairly heavy duty backhoe and it works great but if I could I would get the other 2. :)
Yeah, I would love to have your backhoe.
Agree 100 percent with you brother!!!
I agree grew up with weeks and weeks in a New Holland 665 skid steer. Get a good 4 way bucket and you will be amazed with what you can get done. Plus with a skid steer as long as you can go backward it is very difficult to get it stuck. I would opt for the tracked machines if you have the option. We also had an old Massy Ferguson for bush-hogging because our skid steer did not have an enclosed cab.
I have a Mahindra 2615. 4x4. I wouldn't have gotten the unit you did either. I need the 4x4 and it makes a big difference. I have box blades and tillers and backhoe, post hole diggers, with the front end loader. I have built some forks for it and it does everything I need it to do. The only real problems are the electrical switches. And the starter didn't want to turn it over fast enough. replacing that has fixed the starting issue which is partially the fault of the lighter weight wiring. Other than that it has worked great and I have worked the crap out of it.
I have hauled so many trees with that thing and I admit that was total abuse and the bucket shows it. Trees 3 foot through will do that to it. heh :)
Right now I just wish it was a little bigger and I had another swimming pool job. That was fun.
Good explanation. I have a John Deere 50G mini and it is absolutely a work horse. It’s small enough to get into tight spaces and haul with the pickup but it’s big enough to take down a house. I just bought a Takeuchi TL10 a couple weeks ago and looking forward to getting into some big projects with it. Sell that tractor and treat yourself
Own 50 acres, a third is (mature pines)forest, and two thirds agricultural. Just sold my 27hp Kubota and was considering a mini ex, but I really need to use my full blade, brush hog, forks, and rake. I've chosen to upgrade to the 40-50hp size tractor, and I've been shopping and comparing for a few weeks now and man, I can only say "thank you for this video". I am torn between the Kubota MX5400 and the Mahindra 4550. They are $12k apart in price difference, and I understand a lot of the Mahindra 4550 that is just the basics of "old school style" tractor, manual trans, no bells & whistles, and their loader is appealing. But, the Kubota will come with the 1065 loader and HST, I guess it's just worth it after doing youtube and Google research about both, I've seen WAY more negative about Mahindra. Thank you, sir. Much appreciated!
Alternators can be re-built. The problem is usually a diode that needs to be replaced which is simple. Mechanic here with 27 years experience.
Gonna just convert it to a one wire high amp alternator. Permanent fix and dirt cheap.
So much of the land around us has been bought up and people are moving in. Feel like we should have bought more land, more space between us and our neighbors. We love our neighbors, they are all great but I don't want to see their houses from mine. lol :)
Yeah that the bad part. On the plus side your property value goes up.
Community rentals . A tool for everything
I would buy a min-excavator in the blink of an eye, if only I had SOMEWHERE I could use it. Unfortunately, I have 20 x 40 ft of rented concrete outside my rented house. Whilst I'm sure I could get a concrete breaker thingy for it, but landlord and neighbour would probably not appreciate me digging it all up! ;)
Highlight of Good Of the Land fest was the extreme Sandbox!
Good tips and feedback justin @TheGoodOfTheLand
Look and plan what your future is on the size and what your going too do over time on your purchase of a country property .I always rented a excavator with pickup and delivery and insurance the choice of size I needed and plan and get your work done in couple weeks . Buying a 40 too 50hp tractor four wheel drive and having a woodchipper with power feed / heavy duty flail mower / grapple / heavy duty tiller / pallet forks .Try too buy it all at once in a package deal with the tractor . Save money . Mowing around the house garden tractor .Find a good dealer that has good customer service with quality equipment. It was a lot money for me but I have never regretted it .
Wait... WHAT!?!? I can buy a Voltron?!? WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
As a cityboy I've always wondered... what's the point of much more land? I get the appeal of getting about 10 acres or so, but is there much more you get out of 20 or 50 acres or so? Or is it to get a more variable bit of land? (I mean... having a lake on your land is awesome)
Yeah, I use to want more land but that changed. 20 is plenty.
That’s some good info. We are playing with the idea of getting a tractor. May have to look into a bobcat. Any recommendations on places selling in east Texas? Or just craigslist and fb marketplace?
The standard places are good. There is also a place between us that sells a ton of used equipment. I believe it is called Hines
I'm going to fix my farmall cub, sell it and buy a little kubota I want a three point and some of the stuff I dont or can't have with the cub.
👍🏻👍🏻
Good advice. Rent first
I think I'd go for a 4wd backhoe/loader because it's what I'm familiar with. I do see the advantage of having a skid steer and excavator but that's two machines that I'd have to maintain. I would choose that route if I wanted to make money with them too. And the only thing I'd want that I would not be able to do with the backhoe/loader is a snow blower, I could settle with attaching an old plow to the bucket. If I did go for a tractor it would be Yanmar.
That is a great choice.
I would like to see where you could rent tractors .
Just Google "equipment rental" in your town. Its about $250 per day for a miniex or skid steer
LOOK AT KIOTI!
Kubota is the skid steer to buy
Definitely a fantastic unit. Love the pilot control.
100 percent guaranteed, if it breaks both pieces are yours.
Ha! Nice one!
Mini-excavator is a great choice. Extremely versatile and capable. In my neck of the woods the cost of used equipment is about three times higher than the numbers you were throwing out. Having operated Bobcats and small tractors, and on occasion, a full sized back-hoe, they all have their limitations. The mini-excavator gets around most of those.
What do you think?
you have lots of problem with your mahindra, just get rid of it... I bought a 45hp Kioti (DK45SE) and its turning 2000hours and I only did the engine and HST oil changes, Oh..I broke an hydraulic line once. I agree on the Skid steer but they arent comparable with tractor unless you are comparing a 2020 tractor with a 2005 skid steer... foot controled bucket? hell... to each their own I guess !!! I would like a skid steer but they cost 70k$+ over here... the mini Ex is probably the best piece of equipment to get and really simple to work on... no transmission, just an engine with hydraulic pump.
I mean you got a harbor freight tractor you can’t expect a lot. I suggest never buy a compact tractor. You can buy a utility tractor for nearly the same money and have twice the capability. You just won’t have a hydro and get a loader and a tractor with a wet clutch reverser.
Kubota
Get a mini excavator, make a stump ripper. If you need to rip out roots and take down trees. ua-cam.com/video/PJSx4kTTCtE/v-deo.html
There's no way your Mahindra needs a $700 alternator, it's only charging the battery. Any car alternator that fits the bolt spacing will do. IMO !
The one wire conversion video will be coming soon. Hopefully it will save some other owners some money.
310 hrs isn't much
Yup, she is still a baby
You have no clue what you're talking about. I have owned a demolition company for the last 25 years, with 30+ years of experience on demo/construction here in Southern California, specializing in tight access. I do work for the federal gov, state, city and also high end residential. We have owned 20 bobcat skid steer and bobcat excavator, and not once we've had any engine problems besides the regular wear and tear parts. of course we buy ours new, maybe you're talking about buying used. That's not on bobcat, that on the previous user who probably didn't maintain it. I have also ran Caterpillar, John Deere, Case, Gehl, Mustang etc...etc...You name it, I've ran it. Bobcat beats them all when it comes to best all around. Others may have more lift power, more horse power but shitty control, like Cat skid steer controls sucks vs bobcats. Each skid steer has its high and low, but bobcats are the most well rounded and reliable, specially the old model 5s, 7s and 8s. I'd also like to add, while yes, turning the key on and driving around a skid steer technically makes you an, "operator" but you are definitely NOT an operator by our construction/demolition standards.
You bought Indian made equipment and now you bragging (edit: moaning) about the quality?!!
You should check feedback from other users on UA-cam.
Bragging? I advised against anyone ever purchasing a Mahindra. Hands down worst tractor for sale today. My review was the first negative review on UA-cam. You have to go back five years to find it.
@@TheGoodoftheLand sorry mate, language problem. It should be rather "moan" or "grumble".
We never stop learning... :)
