- Jon Spencer Blues Explosion performing "Afro" on "The Word" on UK TV Channel 4, in 1994. This has long been one of my cherished VHS tapes! I think this was during their second UK tour, maybe early 1994. Shame they don't really get the props now, but like Mark Lamarr says on this clip at this time they really were the best live act around
1994-1995 JSBX were pretty much the greatest band in the world. Still... after those dates.. and before.. pretty much the greatest band in the world.
the sheer amount of cool these people transmit, makes me not worry about global worming !
I remember seeing this went it came on. Never seen anything like it before or after. It taped it and wore the thing out. Best performance on the word ever.
The world needs more Theremin
(woOOoooOo)
Holy fucking shitnuts! How has this existed for 14 years without me realizing? AWESOME
God damn, I would give anything to have seen these guys live at least once :(
Saw them live in Athens 1995, definitely in the top 5 concerts that I've ever been...Non stop action...
I remember watching this at the time and being blown away. As a fan of 60s and 70s music I was convinced there were no good bands in the 90s until I saw this performance.
Solid! JSBX at full throttle crammin' it all in 3 and a half minutes...the policy of this show was to give out free tickets to "dancing people" at clubs to be at the TV recordings..good idea! these are lads & lasses up for it! sure they'd never heard of the Blues Explosion but,as we can see..they got down & they got With It! Blues Explosion!! Blues Explosion!!!
I saw them 3x and need, neeeed, NEED these guys to tour again.....I miss their live shows.
I saw them at Shibuya club quattro in 94. Probably, first coming to Japan. Their live was so cool and I was so excited. I remember that G.love who touring with were looking their live from behind the stage.
Saw them supporting Beastie Boys during the UK tour spring '95, several times! Man, they were on FIRE!
I saw this when originally broadcast and a love affair was born. "Play the blues, punk!" Yeah!
Seen these guys 6 times in Australia, Awesome band😍🤘
Saw them a couple times in the early to mid 2000’s. Once on a fantastic double bill w/Alex Chilton at the Barrymore in Madison, Wi.
I have see JSBE the first one in 1998 on the Arezzo Wave main stage.....UNBELIEVABLE GIG.
Great to see a live audience so into it.
Too bad they´re all paid to be into it :)

Not true!
Incredible, what a band!
Big regrets never being able to see them live.
Theremin blues!
Merges into "History of Sex" at the end (2nd version, very underrated) w/ added improv screaming
ACME and Now I Got Worried are both awsome too... =)
This is how progressive RnR should look like.
i can't wait to see them at pitchfork
Class
Wooch greaaat vid' man, never seen it before.
JSBX for the win !
Cool track.
BLUES EXPLOSION!!!
A 5 star Alternative Rock band song: Afro - The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion [New York, New York] - 1993 - "AMG Pick. The polluted funk of 'Afro,' from 1993, contains sampled flute sounds, a monolithic bass vamp, and a B-3 cranking over the wah-wah guitar. Good first impression on this Funky song." - Extra Width (Matador)-1993.
look how young jon spencer and judah bauer are.
it's all right, ALRIGHT!! It's an afro!
ドラムかっこいいよ
classic
@timmychaos that one really had to grow on me, yes? but now it is one of my faves, as well...but just tonight I was rocking out to Extra Acme and oh how I do love that too...sigh.
You Poms got short changed... When they performed live on Recovery for ABC in Australia the set got thrashed during the performance.
Spoken well....Gopal Raaaaaaooouuu!!!
Goddamn, I must have a theramin.
@markallenkellner sure, i know - we are in agreement, no arguing here. i was just pointing out that there's a world of music where jsbx found it before passing it along to the stripes.
would be nice if this video was embeddable.. thanks.
@toffeethecat I really dug, "Now I Got Worry". But I can find things to like about most that they done did.
number 1 blue

New one called Meat & Bones
For some reason lately, I decided, entirely out of the blue to look up some Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (I think it might have been watching Beavis and Butthead talking over "Dang" on a DVD, thought the song itself sounded cool).
Anyway, having heard a bit more, I wanna get an album or two of theirs. What's the best one to start at?
Extra Width
@PantheonLincolnThe early Jon Spencer is the best.listen to The Honeymoon Killers,Pussy Galore and Boss Hog first .Then play The Blues Explosion. Enjoy.
I have the (possibly false) memory of seeing this performed on MTV's The Jon Stewart Show. Yes, Jon Stewart was on his own variety show at one point, between Remote Control and whatever it is he does now
Would there be lsd in that coke i'm drinking? GREAT vid
The best thing to appear on The Word.
....except Lynne Perrie, maybe. : )
@vladlovesceltic i KNOW its been 3 years..but i worry about global worming too! still!
get everything, seriously, its worth it, except their last album Damage which was pretty weak
"orange" or "extra width"
All from jsbx
Orange
tote me to ashmi pantloni?
...no, "Orange", yes
Tokyocooney
@markallenkellner then one would think you'd get my point about the use of the term "precursor" sort of dismissing a whole world of r'n'b. like i said, just a moinor semantic point. hard to have a friendly conversation these days, ain't it? really really not here to argue. take care, i'm out.
@markallenkellner i understand what you're saying, but there is so much (mostly black) musical history that these guys filtered (hence the name "blues explosion" while freely admitting they weren't playing the blues) into what they were doing that to call them "precursor" is a big disservice to all who came before. strictly semantic argument. i'm not about to say there would likely have been a white stripes without a pussy galore/jsbx. and this particular album is huuuuuuuuuuge.
Elvis tripping on acid.
zuzzzzz
BLUES EXPLOSION!!!
i can't wait to see them at pitchfork
