Hey Dave. Late to the party but I wanted to comment anyway. Great video. You cover all the important details that DIY'ers like me need to know. I'm working 2 jobs to dig out of a financial nightmare and you are saving me hundreds of dollars in parts and labor costs that allow me to keep my car on the road to get to work. I really appreciate it. Thanks.
Thanks! Love the start by hand tip. As a MR (machinist) in the Navy, and in my career trying to teach people to STOP, do not force those fasteners. It is much easer to fix if you do not force it!
I did this to my 99 Civic Coupe back in January the KYB struts are performing well so far no issues my trailing arm bushings are totally fucked when I saw them when changing the struts. For me the easy part was removing the old struts no bolts got seized car is a southern car but I sprayed the bolts on the LCA everyday for a week prior to changing the struts with KW Knocker loose from NAPA hard to say if that did anything or if the bolts would have come out without spraying them but reassembly was the hard part for me I had to keep jacking up the lower control arm to get it lined up I would get the bolt partially through but the other side where the bolt had to go through was blocked I would get one side lined up but the other side the bolt had to go through got blocked when I got the blocked side to line up the other side would then be blocked and the bolt can't be tightened all the way I got the bolt partially started and then I had to either jack up the LCA or push down on the drum to get the bolt to go through the other side hard to remember what exactly I had to do since I did this a little over two months ago but the type of pry bar used in the video is a big help for this job I got the pack of pry bars with a pointed edge from harbor freight it helped me a lot with this.
Hello, I followed your video three years ago and everything worked great. Was wondering if you could point me in reliable ADJUSTABLE struts for this 2000 Honda Civic LX please. I would like to raise my car height a little higher as it is difficult to get out since it is so low. Thank you. Will be watching this again when I replace my struts again. thanks.
After installing front and rear complete strut, car still rides a little rough. It doesn't feel smooth, feels like it hit the ground hard especially when going through bumps and pot holes. What would you suggest next?
Another excellent tutorial! I think this might be the first time you didn't go genuine oem. (I thought you said the hooks shouldn't be used as jack points.) The old struts weren't leaking nor were the springs broken.....what made you change them?
I like KYB struts and use them a lot. The rear hook that I used to jack up the car is a designated lift point by Honda on this model. The old struts did not handle well, and really showed how badly they were performing after replacing the front. Thanks for the comment!
SAVE YOUR TIME! Just go in from the trunk , cant see any point in taking any part of the rear seats apart, unless youre working in a super tight garage like this.
@@BigDog50001 Boy, I hear that! I can't remember something told to me 10 minutes ago. Plus, I know these videos look easy but I've attempted making videos in the past and it's definitely not easy. Thanks for what you do.
Dave another good video. Thanks for taking the time to record it. I noticed the KYB struts looked to have more coils incorporated in the spring assembly. guess because they are aftermarket or it makes no difference? How do you like KYB components? Liked the video and now time for coffee out of my new Mikes Disgrunteled Mechanics coffee mug. Should make it quite enjoyable. Just a side note your shop looks great. Clean and organized. My way of working. Have a great day 👍👍👍
The shock replacements I ordered don't have the nut welded on to the base. This is the first major suspension job I'm trying. Is it safely equivalent to procure and install your own nut in lieu of the welded-on nut? I see now some replacements for sale have the nut, some don't. Thanks. Enjoyed the video. Mike
I have exactly same car and I had question see if u could help me out I have a Honda civic ex 97 VTEC 1.6 and when I am driving the car run good but when I turn it off then turn back on and drive it lose power then it gain power again I changed the distributor still does same thing spark plugs r new and the wires hopefully you can give me some device what you think it could be I don't trust this mechanic they say a lot stuff that it not hopefully you get my msg thank u
Mine as 2020. My Honda Civic si 1996 has 426,000kms. Just replaced front and rear shocks and struts, spark plugs, ignition wires, air filter. And now in highway use it produced 15.36 kms per litres! Now I am driving almost 25 years car with the feel of new car.. nice video!! Thanks for sharing.
I cannot get that front brake assembly bolt out. I have fought with it for two days with all kinds of penetrating oil. I don't want to have to cut it off. I'm even using breaker bars to push the breaks down to try to get the strut assembly out. What up p i a... Thanks Honda my Mitsubishi wasn't this hard😩
great work. The Snap On ones sure do cost a lot, but I don’t want to go back to using normal click type torque wrenches now. It seems like we all have a few haters that just like to click the thumbs down on every video no matter what it is. I appreciate the comment Jonathan, thanks!
Because the the tire(s) needs to be placed somewhere out of my way so I am not tripping on it, and a second jack stand would not be supporting the vehicle so it could be knocked over or get in the way and most likely not be able to be placed under the car in an area where it could catch it without causing damage. If the vehicle falls off the jack stand, I am worth much more than a rim or a cheap jack stand.

Never wore out rear struts on any of my Hondas, and some had nearly 500 000 km on rough Canadian roads.
How many miles on that green Civic?
WD Hewson 240,000 miles on that Civic.

what is the part called you took the bolts off before the coils? at 6:15
Impact driver is the drill and a pair or side bent needle nose pliers.
Take some paper towel and put it over the bolt head and put the socket on it will help keep the bolt on the socket in tight spaces
Paper towel is a great suggestion, pieces of regular paper or work gloves also work! Thanks for the input!
How the hell could you get that bolt out I wish mine would come out 😩
if you can't get the bottom outer bolts out, take the upper control arm loose and pull the strut out that way
@@darinp5612 exactly ! Sometimes that is much easier. And it's only 2 bolt's
I broke two bolts off, now I have no idea wtf to do.
Why put the tire & rim under the car that costs hundreds of dollars instead of just leaving the jack or an extra jack stand that only costs 20$?
Because the the tire(s) needs to be placed somewhere out of my way so I am not tripping on it, and a second jack stand would not be supporting the vehicle so it could be knocked over or get in the way and most likely not be able to be placed under the car in an area where it could catch it without causing damage.
