In my country of origin (Poland), the whole issue got deeply politicised, and polarises the society (on top of difficulties with obtaining abortion and emergency contraception - to get an abortion in case of rape you need court approval, political shenanigans make those issues worse, as far-right blames women - mostly provoking behaviour and promiscuousity also “leaving god, enabling LGBT+ people to exist in peace and killing babies like monsters” and foreign men for far-right’s own failings and negative influence on men’s behaviour due to religious form of heavy patriarchy and glorifying sexual harassment and violence towards women, and violence in general, including armed violence, hostility and crimes). Our sexual violence laws come from pre-WWII times, and are grossly outdated. For a sexual assault on a person with intellectual disability, a predator usually gets a smaller sentence if at all (what a disgrace). Minors aren’t protected enough (in the slightest). Majority of rapes aren’t even legally recognised, not to even mention sexual abuses of other forms - as mentioned, statistics rarely do the justice (unfortunately), as a lot of cases aren’t reported nor tackled. I wouldn’t be surprised (based on my personal experiences and media reports) if the issues in the UK would be worse than presented by media. Lack of action among the police forces is another issue, there’s a lot of discrimination to face there, especially if your national origin isn’t British or you’re not dead because of the abuse (if the abuse occurred on the side of the police or other public services, there’s no justice at all and only further bullying with disregards to all the laws and rights of the victim)

never used to be that way as police in my mother's day would treat Domestic abuse as just a "domestic" so didn't want to know. Luckily in Western society attitudes thankfully are changing. But sadly I know someone from the Asian Community who was physically abused , not by her husband but her brother. But was reluctant to report it as it would be considered by her family as bringing shame onto her family. I do hope attitudes change in the very near future.
