No - location won't be posted as every time I have ever publicly posted the location to an abandoned spot like this, I come back to find it looted and destroyed - Adventurers will find it! I leave hints in the vid~

As much as it’s fascinating to see it abandoned, I hope this village can be restored as an open air museum because it’s just too beautiful, the place itself tucked in the hills, lots of greenery, that little brook, the traditional houses… I despise mass tourism, but this could be part of little sustainable tours, the young people helping being the tour guide, it could also become an artists’ retreat… It’s just so beautiful to be forgotten! Thanks for showing it to use ❤️

I’ve been playing a game on my iPad called Japan Rural and this reminds me of that a lot. It’s about moving into an abandoned house and fixing it while starting to grow crops, fish, helping the few remaining villagers and repurposing abandoned places to start bringing life back to the village again. I love that there’s a calendar with different traditions that you can follow on certain days, like offering ohagi at a grave in autumn. It’s a beautiful game.

I always find these kinds of videos interesting, but a bit melancholy. These houses once had families living in them, Mums cooking food, kids playing. Now, there are only traces of their lives clothes, appliances, furniture, curled photographs. They once meant something to people who are no longer there. It's fascinating to see these places, but a bit sad too.

Climbing that ladder at 21:30 with a camera in one hand and a flashlight in the other was impressive enough without trying to get to the top. I've tried just walking up a steep & rocky path with a camera in one hand and an umbrella in the other and I seriously thought I would fall to my death when I started loosing balance until I somehow managed to make sure I fell sideways instead of backwards. So I'm fully support the "safety first" mentality (even if I sometimes fail to live up to it myself).

One of the details that amazed me the most, was the road itself, how it’s built in the river’s little canal, a very good idea to save on having to clear forest or build bridges/tunels, and I doubt such a small river that far up a mountain experiences much flash flooding if any. I love when urban infrastructure merges with nature!

I love exploring abandoned places and yes, would really like to see you go back to this spot and find folks to talk to and its history. There is such a nostalgic sadness to places like this. You can imagine the children walking to school together or playing in the yards, women cooking over the stoves, men chopping wood or tending a garden. I really wish someone would come in and completely fix up this entire village to its original condition and open it up as a place for tourist to come and experience old, historical Japan. Tourist dollars could then keep the village in good shape and alive again. Maybe you can give someone that idea there and get them to run with it!! Awesome video as usual!!

As always, Norm, very cool video. Now, here’s my take on it. Looking at how big the houses are and how the large timbers were of the style of, like you said, 100 years old or older; looking at the styled roofs; looking at the old kitchens; looking at the fact that I did not see any indoor plumbing; looking at the way the houses were placed along the road, I think this was, at one time, a Way-Station for travelers. These houses may have been Inns or places to eat and drink. I would love to see where the road came from and went to. And considering how grand those houses are this must have been a very important Way-Station. I really hope you get to talk to the folks who are or were trying to do some restoration work. Take care and thanks again.

I would check out the production date on that bottle in 27.48. should give us a sense when the house is abandoned.

Hi Norm, thanks for the great tour. Too bad you couldn't date the village, but it was definately retro. Yeah, I think you should return after contacting the university/preservation group or locals who lived there. Keep exploring and keep safe.
29:51 - I believe that is a traditional style pillow. I saw a similar design in China, but with different material. I also think that those pillows were for summer months when a pillow stuffed with feathers or cotton would get wet due to sweating. Just my opinion, hopefully someone can verify.
Did you get the name of the shrine? It looks like the name was on a stone pillar.

Doing a little research, the fridge at 27:08 comes back as an early 80s model but was based on a continuation of their (National) late 60s/early 70s models. Likely same compressor and design with a new esthetic.

A very nice video, even if it's a bit sad to see a village abandoned.
And judging from the fridge/freezer, the plastic stuff (baskets, and bowls), and the CD player boombox, I'd say it was abandoned somewhen around the 1980s or 1990s, but no later than 1998.

I would love to visit, and would love to see it all fully restored.
I have been to retreats in Australia which have lots of self contained cabins in nature.
The whole village can be turned into such a retreat, for groups to hire and get away for a weekend.

At 21:37 there seems to be a sound just before you say "wow" and it kinda sounds like a voice. Now before anyone says anything, no I don't think it's a ghost or anything I just found it amusing and a bit spooky.

Tsuchikabe, 土壁, literally 'dirt wall'. 'Wattle and daub' or 'cob' are similar traditional building techniques in the West.

The creaking sound the chest made when Norm was closing the chest at ~ 17:32 kinda sounded like "Hello" 😂 I had to wind it back, cuz I thought he put some sfx on the video 😂

You need to carry a haunted village survival pack. It would be a flashlight, batteries, gloves, holy water, salt, and a lighter 😆

Great exploration of a well preserved old village i was getting Silent Hill / Fatal Frame vibes during this, especially first person flashlight view. Hope the restoration continues.

Absolutely Beautiful...Looks like some kind of Fairy Tale Place...My guess is many of these places went abandoned during Japan's boom decades during the 70's / 80's & 90's they moved to the cities where the Jobs were and left the Nature behind because it did not pay to stay also most of these places look way beyond repair and are ready for demolition...

I own a 98 years old house in a rural village in Spain. It was built by my great grandpa (I never met him) but it also was my grandma's home. I'll keep it until the day I pass away (which is something that I don't plan to happen soon). I hope it can survive at least another century without being demolished or abandoned.
