Carl was such an important part of the Beach Boys. Carl had the set list wrote out on his hand before every show, Carl counted in every song and would look at the drummer at the end of the song to get the ending right.
My favorite Beach Boys Song Period. Vintage Carl at his best. I love this song. The harmony is classic. Sweet Sweet Music. The Sound of the City seems to disappear. RIP CARL!
Carl sounded so great here. Can't believe 2 yrs later he was gone. What is it that it says on his gravestone? The heart & voice of an angel. The world is a far lesser place without you. So, so true. RIP Carl.
The very last time we hear Carl sing in full health. I find it very interesting that not one--one--of his '97 appearances have been uploaded on You Tube. In a way, I'm glad; in another, I think I'd be ready to hear/ see him from that last tour. Hmmm--maybe not. Wolfsky9
I noticed that also, but wondering if it was done out of respect for his declining health. I am not sure if I would like to remember him in that way. Still Miss his Friendship, Heart & Vocals
Great cut from the 1969 20/20 album.Mike sang lead on all the early uptempo songs (Catch a wave, Surfin Safari, Calif Girls, I Get Around, Shut Down...) Brian (In My Room, Don't Worry Baby...) and Carl didn't come into the spotlight until God Only Knows and Good Vibrations. A great voice, I saw him on a solo tour for his 1st album and did all solo songs except for 'Long Promised Rd' a great cut from 1971 Surf's Up LP. RIP Carl
The last time a healthy, vibrant Carl is captured in concert. for those of you lucky enough to be there, what a blessing--bittersweet though it is now--to have been there, If we had only known. Wolfsky9
@colderbeer Just read your comment on Mike Love's voice, and respect your opinion. For me, Mike's best vocal bass was on Don't Worry Baby especially when Lorrie Morgan is covering it. But IMHO Carl could knock spots off Mike as far as singing, and being a decent human being goes. Rarely will you hear anything negative said about Carl. It IS sad both Dennis & Carl died so young-you're right there.
Carl not only sang it, he arranged it. I read where the Ronnettes first sang it, I think written by Phil Spector, but Carl's arrangement was way better,

Wolfsky9 I always love your posts. I was at Carl's very last show at the Borgata 1997 august . I was right in front of him. I didn't know he was sick he looked tired and his hair looked like he was wearing a hair piece. I chalked it up to age. He looked fine he did sit most of the show. When he did GOK the place went nuts.Knowing Carl If he thought he looked bad I think he would have stopped appearing live. There is a short clip of him on you tube at harbor lights. It's from a local news broadcast announcing their show. The camera zooms in for one very brief close of him. He's puffy in the face but he looks and sounds great.Check it out I know how much you loved Carl.
I saw the group do this in '71, at Santa Monica civic Auditorium & to me, this is better. Maybe it's better sound, but Carl's voice is just so perfect on this song! He produced it for the record, & Brian never sang on it. Carl, we miss you more as the years go by. Wolfsky9

For many years I always thought Mike Love was the best singer in the band. After hearing songs like this and "God Only Knows," I think Carl was just as good and just as valuable a singer as was Love. It's soooooo sad that he died. Of course, it's just as sad that Dennis died too. Nobody lives forever, but these men died way before their time. Hundreds of years from now people will still listen to music from the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Elvis, and other talented legends.
Carl Wilson wasn't just a far superior vocalist than Mr. Love, but there is probably no match to his vocals in rock history. In quality of vocals, Mike was probably 4th at best in the group. More likely 5th or 6th.
there have been mild rumors of a Beach Boys 50th anniversary in 2011. I guess they have to work it out.. Brian, Al, Bruce and Mike. Dave Marks wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sir, With respect, you are a year off. It must have been Aug of '97, because Carl wasn't diagnosed until spring of '97 [ see Phil Galdstone's Notes on " Like A Brother" for the time placement. In Aug. of '97, yes, sadly, Carl was very ill, and made it until Early Sept., when he was no longer able to get onstage. In '96, when this song was recorded, he was still in good health. Wolfsky9
One of Carl's very best, it's worth noting that this song was the very 1st on which big brother BW had NOTHING--NOTHING AT ALL--to do with making or recording the song. It was entirely Carl. As for the " Soul Searching " album that never was--it was during these years, that Carl finally lost patience with BW, & his voice, & work habits. Yes, BW seemed excited about the project, but who was to know if or when he'd lose interest? And, his voice was so off, it bothered Carl terribly. Wolfsky9
Nobody ever had a voice like Carl Wilson...just incredible!

I was there! Last time before Carl was really failing. What a great show! The purest voice in rock and roll history
Carls voice stayed great until the end.Truly an amazing gift and one of the nicest guys in the music business as was Dennis.
Note Carl's expressive vibrato and his power-singing from his chest, not his throat/mouth. One of the best of the 20th Century.
The music of this band makes me speechless over and over again. Carl's voice is so beautiful. Gone far too young.
How bittersweet. Vintage Carl. Two years later, gone. Damn.
My favorite Beach Boys Song Period. Vintage Carl at his best. I love this song. The harmony is classic. Sweet Sweet Music. The Sound of the City seems to disappear. RIP CARL!
What a voice!!!

I became a fan six years too late... is it possible to miss someone you didn't even know about until years after his death?
I had become a real fan enough to buy the music and went to see them live was in "99. A year after he passed.
Carl sounds great here wow what a voice he had the best!
RIP CARL WILSON!
Carl is in Heaven singing with the Angels.
It's so wonderful to hear Carl sing so beautifully -- and so tragic that he was taken from us so soon afterwards.
GOD BLESS CARL WILSON - GOD BLESS CARL WILSON -
Carl has the voice of an angel!
Carl just SHINES on this !!! ...as usual.

I love Carl so much! What a loss! Wishing you were here

"Anyway, it's called 'I Can Hear Music'..."
(AUDIENCE SILENT)
WTF?? The crowd should've went nuts.
Oh my, this was done a year before he died.
2 years, but you were close! ;)
still sounded so great. liked this better than when he was younger. voice matured so well

The 90's live rendition of ICHM had a very adult contemporary feel to it, much like the Stars & Stripes studio version.

AS good as Mike Love ???!!! He kept Mike afloat
His bass harmonies are the ONLY thing I'll give Mike.
When was he officially diagnosed? I thought it wasn't till late '96...

Mike Love was probably the best "all-around" singer for the band. I can't really disagree with anything you said.....
No carl was then al deny
