I lived through this particular flood. I lived right up the hill where that water is coming down from. I lost everything, the cottage behind me came off the foundation, this water rushed through my cottage and was ceiling deep in the back area where it rushed in, it was rushing from the back door through to the front door, at this same rate. I couldn't hear anything, my cats were gone, my appliances swirled around me, it was a raging river. I was yelling for help but nothing could be done. The cottage that broke apart behind me clogged up the culvert, which was also blocked by huge boulders and two cars. It was intense. I was not leaving without my cats. I held the screen door in with all the might to keep cats from washing away, and bracing against the door to keep from getting pushed out. It was like getting beat up by a linebacker. It lasted about 5 hrs before it died down enough to get out safely. Amazingly, my cats survived. One was swimming and drenched and caked with black mud debri, one was wet and muddy on her legs and belly, and the last one was tucked way up in the furthest corner of my only tiny closet. It was a miracle for sure. I didn't even have shoes anymore, no clothes, no furniture, all my jewelry and brand new futon and pretty little chairs and my books and tapestries and art supplies, and my little garden of 5 thriving tomato plants......gone. A lot of personal growth and shifts in my perceptions happened that day. It's been quite a healing journey. I survived the experience because all of my cats survived. I'm still so grateful. My neighbor behind me lost hers. She was swept up the mountainside a ways, broken leg, lost everything...including her cats. I felt so lucky. There are amazing insights that come from these traumas. We can survive them, if we learn how to. Loss is loss to be grieved, and also to find freedom in other ways. Anyway, long story short.....I sat in a crisis kind of meditation that night it happened, almost pleading to know WHY. I got......'it's just an experience to have. That's all.' And THAT made perfect sense to me. 🕉
So glad you pulled through, ended up poorly for my bestie by the park, but he and his wife stayed with me until they got back on track, they have now moved to Minnesota, lol
This is really screwed up! I really love Manitou Springs. One of the most beautiful places. You could go and eat down the road at Amanda's Fonda, then cruise down to old Colorado Springs. Then at the end of the night back up the hill to Manitou Springs. Beautiful beautiful place around there.
+Didgeree The Brony it came after the fire in 2012, which increased the risk of devastating flash flood/ landslides. manitou is right up against the mountains, so all the burnt down trees and loose soil/rocks were basically funneled into the cañon that manitou is at the end of
Didgeree The Brony i live in the town of manitou yes. except i live on the edge of the city, so my house was about 30-35 feet above the creek, so the flooding didn't reach us
Wow all those smashed up cars. Never heard of this place but it looks like a cute little town. Hope you got everything cleaned up and there were no injuries/casualties!
Lindsay Grove no, it's pretty cleaned up. a small town like Manitou, it ended up being a lot to clean up. The school now has flood plans for students who live up in the mountains (that also got flooded) it was pretty tough but it would be an amazing town of there wasn't so many people there now. Legalization of Marijuana raised rent and that's what pushed me out of the town. I hope it shapes up one of these days, my kids miss their friends so much. great town. *used to be a great town.
i wonder how much damage the poppyseed got... if I'm not mistaken, that is the building that you see across the creek from your apartments. i do know my grandpas church (Saint Andrews), which is right behind the building that they filmed from got extensive damage in the basement. i was gone that summer, but when i came back most everything near the creek was washed out. luckily our house didn't get any damage, as its closer to the trading post and up in the hills
Thats so crazy! Was this because of the fires that took out all the vegetation? Great filming too, I hate it when I see people film stuff but don't hold the camera steady or don't even aim the camera at the subject so this was def nice.
As a resident I can tell you, it was most definitely because of the fire the year before. We get heavy rains here alot. The destruction of the topsoil from the forest fire made this a catastrophy. It was very frightening to be in it. Whole houses we're coming down Canon Ave.
+Phil Whipple After the flood - on that particular bend - they had put up a brick wall instead of railing. What concerns me is that they didn't do it on the other side of the river because if another flash comes it will just be diverted to the building across the river.

Why is everyone commenting on the car? 6:36 The car is fine. Unless it was running the entire time, it's fine. No water is getting in the engine, transmission, or electrical. The exhaust would be an issue if it were running. In all honesty, I doubt much water even got in the car (which would be the only concern, mildew).
Hi Matt - I'm working on the 150th Anniversary Exhibit at the Manitou Springs Heritage Center and doing a story about the resilience of this city after many historic floods over the years. To my knowledge, this 2013 flood is the only one caught on film. I would love to use portions of your video for the exhibit and interview you for an "Oral History". Please let me know if you're interested. Thanks much! Lynn
It looked like it was holding fine until that debris started piling up in the corner. If someone were there to quickly remove the board it might have not flooded that bad. Thought what the Hell do I know.
Run up of a river in a turn should not be underestimated when it's at full capacity, and placing such a low bridge in a turn is the most stupid place as you can clearly see..
Been there, seen that in Manitou. Who owns the silver car ? Who cares, it isn't you. Do they have flood insurance? Who caress, it isn't your car. These are things you have no control over and cannot change. Worry about something you can affect.
Thanks for posting this video. It's a good reminder of the power of a flash flood in Manitou.
This is a super video. Ought to have way more views. Thanks for posting. I added it to favorites along with some other playlists as well.

I was there also..I lived on Narrows right behind you. I was friends with Laura in the yellow cottage. What a terrible time it was for us all.
The power of water should never be underestimated!
That got out of control fast !
I lived in Colorado Springs and know Manitou Springs fairly well. Oh, how tragic for them.
Beautiful Upload friend. keep it up. Thank you for sharing this to us. Greetings from Korea
That bridge took it like a champ.
Nothing like being in the right place.
Us colorado natives remember this well, brought alot of us closer together ❤️
.
Ah the perks of living in manitou... My sister moved there in October and I'm scared for her in the summer...

Padre celestial ten misericordia de nosotros y del mundo entero.
that little bridge was a fucking trooper
Incredible! The flashfloods in Queensland a few years ago has nothing on this!

+massaweed420 Okay. I didn't know that. I live in rural Australia
@@massaweed420 Hello. Still happens it in 2022???
That was one helluva piece of plywood that started the diversion.
the power of nature
Wow all those smashed up cars. Never heard of this place but it looks like a cute little town. Hope you got everything cleaned up and there were no injuries/casualties!
There are parts still not cleaned up 4 years later! The state of Colorado is basically flat-broke.

This flooding video is from 2016 when I was working in Houston!!
That was a Hell of a Flood.
Mother and I just left day before the flood..
Thats so crazy! Was this because of the fires that took out all the vegetation? Great filming too, I hate it when I see people film stuff but don't hold the camera steady or don't even aim the camera at the subject so this was def nice.
No it was really heavy rain
As a resident I can tell you, it was most definitely because of the fire the year before. We get heavy rains here alot. The destruction of the topsoil from the forest fire made this a catastrophy. It was very frightening to be in it. Whole houses we're coming down Canon Ave.
And that's why something like this is called a flash flood. You can see how easy it is for people to get caught and injured or killed like this.
I don't think those sandbags were high enough.
+Phil Whipple After the flood - on that particular bend - they had put up a brick wall instead of railing. What concerns me is that they didn't do it on the other side of the river because if another flash comes it will just be diverted to the building across the river.
Dang I live in Colorado but not there that’s scary.. poor maintou
Wow this is nuts
That car is totally strapped onto that beam! SMART BITCHES.
agreed
I was there when this happened!!

Will a little stray kitten or rat or dog have time to run away or do they die sometimes in floods?
It looked like it was holding fine until that debris started piling up in the corner. If someone were there to quickly remove the board it might have not flooded that bad. Thought what the Hell do I know.

Grew up working bambino pizza. Luv that arcade
I hate to see this happen to my favorite town. I sure hope none of those antique nastolgic penny arcade games were damaged.
Johnny Sandbag and The Overflows 🎵
Makes me wonder if the car owner has a "flood damage" rider attached to their insurance policy.......
Oh wow that's terrible!! I've walked over that bridge.
What a mess. Hope no one is in a hurry
Imagine the clean up .
Where is the owner of that silver car?
I bet he/she wishes they didn't park there that day
watchin' this is kinda like watchin' paint dry🖌
OK, you had time to sand bag and not move the car? Did someone want a new car or what???
what a terrible day that must been, they had time to move that grey Honda.
This place must be near a mountain, lots of momentum in the water.
It's a mountain town in Colorado, pretty much in the shadow of Pike's Peak.
Yes, I can tell you that it is certainly in the mountains.
MYGOLDCOIN101 Manitou springs is at the bottom of Pikes Peak, none as America's Mountain
Manitou is IN the mountains! We are in the shadow of Pikes Peak. We are in a pass area-Ute Pass.
The fucking plywood XD
Ooops! Did y'all build all of your structures WAY too CLOSE to the creek? Oopsie daisy.
Sirens went off at 8:55
That's a ton of damage. :(
Massive power
BOM DIA! Pra mim é uma honra esta aqui te prestigiando, vamos sempre juntos somar e fortalecer nossos trabalhos, eu já estou por aqui,.,,

Неужели нельзя было машину чуть выше перегнать?
at least for like a minute
ebay will be happy with "low miles" cars to sell
This so sad
Horrendous.
why would you stand there and watch the flooding when you should be taking cover....smdh
This ain't a hurricane or tornado. All you need is high ground and you're perfectly fine.
