Beautiful drive Chris! It looked perfect when you were there, not much traffic! Have they lowered the speeds since adding the new road? Looks like they’re maintaining it in great shape!
Sometimes when our old roads get a bypass here the old road gets neglected and closed. Thanks so much for adding the map and sharing your progress along the route. 👌 A very wonderful honey store! 🐝🐝💛💛 - Jen
    Have a great weekend!

Thanks Jennifer , I think the whole road had a 100k limit up until recently when as you noted it became 80. Here in NZ the motorways and intercity routes , known as State Highways are 100% funded by central government via a tax on fuel and local roads are funded by the city or district they are in with a subsidy from central government which varies a little across the country and those local funds come from a proportion of our annual “rates”, I think you guys might call them a property tax. (I pay about US$2500 annually). The rates pay for everything local bodies do like libraries, parks , roads, foot paths , swimming pools and many other public facilities. But getting back to your point when a state highway is handed over to a local body it must be in good shape and not just be a wreck !! Of course with much fewer trucks especially and cars on the old route it will last a lot longer between the need for re-seals etc!

What a lovely scenic drive along the old route, it's likely got a more chill feel about it when compared to the new motorway. Nice to see how the Osmo Action 4 records the drive. Great map captures shared along the way. 👍👍🚗

Hey thanks a lot , I'm still struggling with getting internal reflections off the windscreen, I'm trying a polariser but its near impossible with the tiny screen to seen them at the time of recording . Pretty sure it can help , I think my next move is to bring my iPad and connect that as a way of checking 😀

@@Chris-NZ Sounds like a good idea, I hadn't noticed much reflection. Nice!

For the volume of traffic I get the upgrade but oh I loved that old road and route. The Old Puhoi Pub with their Pea -Pud- Pie! Oh memories. I'd take that if I was going up north 🐝. Unfortunately I won't be this time round. I can report that Hamilton to Napier ( and visa versa) isn't a picnic at the moment. Took nearly 2 hours longer yesterday. Road works all over the place. This was a dream ride Chris. Most enjoyable. 👌🙋‍♀🇳🇿🥝 Cheers from Hamilton.

Hi, Glad you enjoyed the trip, it’s so much more relaxing now it’s not bumper to bumper. Good news the Puhoi Pub is still there but sadly the Puhoi Cheese cafe has closed permanently. Not sure entirely what happened there but from what I can glean the business got hammered during the pandemic of unknown origin and then they got flooded in the storms of 16 months ago. It’s a shame as it had been operating successful for decades. 😀. I’m off to New Plymouth and I believe that road is equally riddled with roadworks, looking out the window I will definitely have a strong tailwind !!

@@Chris-NZ oh that about the cafe is indeed sad. Icon lost. Travel safe. It’s wetter and stormier further south I believe. I’ve had nothing but sunshine since 13 March when I arrived in Australia till now. Fingers xed for more of the same. 😎. Happy travels. 🙋‍♀️🥝

Still remember the coffee shop on the old route - homemade cheese scones are the best 😊😊😊😊

What a beautiful roadway! Sometimes I think that the back roads are better than the main roads don’t you? Great video Chris!!

Absolutely agree especially as it’s so much easier to meander along at a sedate pace taking in the scenery rather than on our main road where you might find a semi-trailer behind you at an intimidating following distance if your pace doesn’t meet their expectations. 😀
