Sounds ridiculous - but think about it over the long term - say the average NZer uses it twice a year, that’s 10million trips a year, over 30 years = 300mil trips - that’s 3 billion minutes saved. $0.27/minute saved. Then think about what proportion of those trips are freight movements. Seems like it pays it’s way.

Intensifying the inner city suburbs is the only real solution to this. Building public transit corridors and zoning dense zoning around the walkable catchments is the key. Some of this is already underway, there never really is enough money though to build the new infrastructure it seems. The best expensive projects will pay themselves back but it take years and years. Unfortunately politicians only care about the next election cycle and not long term. Some people have to make unpopular decisions now for the future of the city. But no one seems to be willing to do that. The proposed tunnelled light rail is shit very cost inefficient needs to be scraped for something more cost efficient.
@Neil Stanley More road like this, busways are excellent value for public transport. Shared pathways as opposed to on-road cycleways don't cut down on traffic much, but they are great for recreation.

The toll road sign is for the existing Northern Gateway and Johnstones Hill tunnels.
